Non-Moto / Engine oil: Mineral, semi-synthetic and synthetic
« on: March 13, 2014, 04:09:23 PM »
Wow, I've been unhappy about having to pay $16(US)/L for my Motul 800....  guess that's not so bad.  I won't complain.

I occasionally am tempted to go back to mineral oil (standard yamalube), just to avoid spooge.
It seems that no matter how crisply I jet my bikes, that they still spit black stuff out the back as long as I'm running high end synthetic oil.  Whenever I run anything non-synthetic (same or richer ratio with no change to jetting) I get a clean exhaust.  I theorize that I'm not getting the combustion chamber hot enough to actually burn the Motul.

General Two Stroke Talk / engine differences between 2001 and 2005 yz250

Yes, '02 was the last change to the airbox and to the plastics.  For that reason alone, I really wish my yz was an '02 instead of an '01.

My guess is that whatever difference there is with the cases wouldn't make a difference on the bike, but can't help to validate.

If you're finding them cheap enough, it's likely worth the risk as the worst case would be you re-selling the cases for a profit  ;-)

my understanding is that the '99+ motors are all the same, with some slight changes being made to the cylinder porting in 2000.

Interesting to know that the p/n of the cases changed though.

My 2001 yz250 has a quite vertical cylinder.

Oh! Also, how do you know if you need a new head, and where could I get one repaired, or even modified?

Is there damage on your current head?  Typically it will only need replaced/reworked if there is pitting in it from detonation.  The pitting will create an initiation site for future detonation.

High temp black paint does very well to cover up rust and refresh stock black pipes.

I've never felt the need to modify the chromed pipes.

Yamaha went to a 5 speeder from 02 onwards? Really? As if the Hondas weren't enough of a failure.

Only the '02, '03 and '04 yz125 were 5 speeds.  They still generally won the shootouts, though typically in spite of the 5 speed.

'05 onwards went back to a 6 speed trans, and they have aluminum frames (which are not my preference).

That's one rough bike to start with....  which will make the build more rewarding.

I think you'll be happy in the end as '01 is a good year for the yz125....  I know I like mine an awful lot.

'01 is the last year they had a steel frame AND a 6-speed trans....  '02-'04 went to a 5 speed trans and '05 went to aluminum frame.

I also think you'll be happy having it stay a 125...    once you go up in displacement, it loses a lot of its charm.

I'd like to hear more about it after you get some more time with the 20.0.  I know there are lots of people out there modifying them and there are some kits to go higher tech with the batteries where you can get better life and lose 10-20 lbs from the bike...  just expensive.

I recently bought my 3 yr old daughter an OSET 12.5 and it's a great little bike, though she doesn't have the nerve for it yet.  I'm hoping she takes to it next summer as I'd like for her to progress to the 16.0 and eventually the 20.0.

One word and one symbol: WHY?

The real answer is in the first post.  This is the "missus'" bike.  If his missus is anything like mine, then the asthetics are more important than the mechanicals.   ;D

It's still about two weeks.... at least it was a year and a half ago when I last sent them a cylinder.

good luck.

It's criminal what some owners do to their bikes.  I've had to learn from experience that condition is king when looking at bikes as repair costs from an irresponsible PO can add up REALLY quickly.

If you do end up putting more $$ into the bike than you wanted to, make yourself feel better by thinking about the fact that you are resurrecting the bike and saving it from the scrapyard.

AWESOME job Charles and job well done to you and the rest of the TSM crew...   8) 8) 8) 8)

Charles now maybe you can get some well deserved rest before diving into the prep plans for 2014...   :D

Fastest two stroke he's ever ridden....

That's high praise!

I'm trying not to get too excited....  but the TSM riders have been on the cusp of qualifying for so long and it sounds like the bikes have seen a step change in performance with the PC motors.....    really hoping to see all three riders qualify, and see Marshall make some points!!

That bike is 54 mm stock.  If your piston is 55mm and the cylinder is plated, that means somone had the cylinder stripped, bored and replated at +1mm.

If your cylinder looks good, I suppose I'd just buy a 55mm piston and be done...  otherwise, you could send it out to a plating shop and they may be able to get you back down to 54mm...   not sure on that one.
