I assume you mentioned to the new owner that he needs to become a member of Two Stroke Motocross.com  8) ;D

We're trying to be patient, but hey we're all 2 smoke lovers, and waiting to hear his thoughts is killing us....   8) :D ;D

One other thing to consider...  Metal does fatigue, regardless if its alum or steel...  The steel frame is much easier to have repaired then the alum.  Most of us have a steel welder and could make the repair if needed, but access to an alum welder would require a trip to a specialty shop.

Technical / Re: What Gearbox Oil For KX 250?
« on: January 07, 2010, 05:29:54 AM »
I've been running ATF for years...  never an issue, shifts are buttery smooth...

Would you mind telling us why you choose to use ATF?? I'm really curious to find out.  Thanks!
I've been using ATF for years now with no problems, the main reason i use it is because it's cheaper than specific gbox oil. You can buy it in bulk and change it after every couple rides.
In my experience people will buy an expensive gbox oil then run it for too long cause they don't want to spend the $ again so soon, I believe the benefits of always having clean oil outweigh any possible negatives of running ATF ( and i can't think of any anyway ). A car auto trans has clutch packs and bearings the same as a dirtbike and i don't believe a dirtbike gearbox will ever see the stresses that a car trans does, so ATF should be up to anything your motorbike can throw at it.
I've been told by many reputable sources that ATF's the way to go the most noteable being Ross Mcwaters ( long time race mechanic, current KTM factory racing australia team manager. he said he used to run it in the factory KX's when he was with KAWASAKI.).
Personally speaking though I've used it for along time and have never had any trouble, Just make sure it's at least DEXRON III rated and you'll have no quality issues.
I've been using ATF for years now with no problems.  I use it for several reasons,
1st it's cheaper than gearbox oil, plus I change it after every couple rides.  It always looks as clean as when I put it in.
2nd I agree, that if ATF can handle a cars auto tranny, with its clutch packs and bearings, the same as a dirt bike, ATF should be up to anything your dirt bike can throw at it.
I've used it for along time and have never had any trouble.  I use the generic version from my local auto parts store.

General Two Stroke Talk / Factory KTM bike shootout stroker vs. smoker
« on: January 01, 2010, 08:31:41 AM »
Not MX, but an interesting read non the less...

http://www.dirtrider.com/reviews/dirt_bike/141_0910_mike_lafferty_ktm_400_xcr_w_vs_russell_bobbitt_250_xc_comparison/index.html

I like how they make the stroker more smoker like with the clutch slipper to eliminate engine braking.

I started to adjust the jetting on my carb this past year.  The benefits are huge and all it costs is a little cash and some time.  I wish I'd started to adjust the jetting years ago.

There are a lot of "younger" riders on this forum.  Based on the questions I've seen, many have no idea how to properly jet their bike, I've seen a few have asked where the jet were located. All of us were in their shoes before. They are just trying to educate themselves.  I think the article is a great 1st step.  Many do not understand the gains made by properly jetting their bikes, nor do they have the expertise or experience to jet their bikes.  For a few dollars spent on different jets and needles, and some time with a notepad, the power gains and knowledge can be the difference of a bike that runs as intended or one that runs like crap.... Lets keep this thread going with general how tips to jet our bikes. I too am not a jetting expert....  so I too love to learn more about the art of jetting our bikes.

We need to create market demand for the 2T through professional motocross and that's the bottom line.

I agree, but with the recent changes in the amatur racing allowing 250 vs.250 I foresee smokers being more in demand.  Also for 2010,at the pro ranks of GNCC, its now 250 vs. 250 regardless of the number of strokes.

Some may think he is a little cocky, but I thought it was very entertaining.  I liked the tricks he was doing with the segway on the MX track.  At least he has a good sense of humor....

Taddy's trials background really makes him such a good rider.  I marval at the skill trails riders have.  His trails background really come out during Endrocross races, but at the extreme races, he is truly amazing.

I watched him at a GNCC race in Ohio this year, he seems like he's a very down to earth guy, with amazing skills.
