Technical / Re: Silencer Packing
« on: May 04, 2010, 08:29:37 AM »
I wanted to do it today is why I researched the house stuff when my local shop was sold out. But I think I will just wait until Thursday and try a couple different shops for two stroke packing and be done with it.

Yeah I just can't believe house insulation works. On the two stroke sections of thumpertalk seems a lot of guys use it. But I sure don't want to be repacking every time I ride and I don't want to waste the time experimenting if it doesn't work, lol.

Technical / Silencer Packing
« on: May 04, 2010, 06:37:03 AM »
I did a search and didn't find anything, so sorry if this is a repost. I would like to repack the silencer's on both mine and my nephew's bikes (1988 KX125, 1997 CR80 Expert).

I am just curious what everyone is using and much you pay. In a google search it seems more people are recommending regular pink house insulation, but I am skeptical. I have used FMF in the past and it's what the local shop carries but of course they are sold out right now, LOL.

General Two Stroke Talk / Re: Noise at MX Tracks
« on: May 04, 2010, 06:25:25 AM »
We have races every Friday night at a local fairgrounds. It used to be driving by the only way you knew they were racing was the lights were on and dust was rising. Now you can hear the roar of the 4-strokes from quite a distance away. I am really surprised the neighboring houses haven't protested the noise yet.

Nice bike, welcome to the site.

That's great and Mat Cuddy's response/article is very good.

I already warned him this bike will be a big difference from the TTR. He has ridden my KX a few times, but just around the yard. I had to re-true the rear wheel on that TTR twice this year already from him jumping it so I figured we batter get him something else before he trashed that bike,  :) .

Yesterday we traded my nephew's 2000 TTR125 for a 1997 CR80 Expert ("big wheel"). He was really over riding that little TTR and we got lucky and found someone who wanted a smaller bike for his girlfriend. Zach lives with us and we are his legal guardians.

Got home too late for him to ride it, so no he wasn't riding in shorts and a t-shirt, lol:

Next to my KX for size comparision:

Thanks, I have been a fan of these since I was a kid. So far it is running and performing well.  Technically I am too big for a 125 but the local riding club has some gnarly hills and I haven't had a problem yet climbing them.

Vintage Two Strokes / Re: Kickstarters: Left or Right?
« on: April 30, 2010, 07:20:55 PM »
I've had a couple left kick KTM's and many right kick Japanese. I prefer right kick, but the fact that I have permanent nerve damage in my left leg from two back surgeries might have something to do with me not liking left kick bikes.

I refurbished, not restored, a 1984 KTM125MX about 9 years ago. Parts were available but hard to find. Last year I was given a 1986 KTM250MX in non-running condition and parts were impossible to find for that bike. I tossed it out on clean up day in a fit of frustration, LOL.

Very nice! ;D

Even at 200lbs I am and have always been a small bore fan. I just love ringing out a small bike in the woods. Just fits my riding style better I guess.

I wish I could've seen it - I only got to read about it in Monkey Butt.

Great book! My wife bought it for me 9-10 years ago or so and I have read it more tmes than I recall. I am honestly re-reading it right now.  :D . I have always been a fan of his and actually liked DirtBike back when he was editor. I had all the issues from the 80's through early 90's, but when I moved to Alabama in '93 my brother sold them at a yard sale. I miss those magazines, LOL.

An 800 bolt on mod that increases up to 4 HP? That's a bargain...I've never once been riding my 250 and thought "hmm, I wish I had more power."

I have to ask, why get a big bore kit then?

John,
Yes it says "simple machines forum" at the upper right.

I like this format so I vote Yes.

Me too.
