General Two Stroke Talk / Any YZ125 owners?
« on: September 18, 2010, 04:07:05 PM »
I am in the market for a newer bike than my 1988 since I can't get some parts for it (suspension, flywheel weight, bigger tank; basically stuff to make it a better trail bike). I was thinking about a 200cc or even a 250cc if I found a deal which I haven't around here, but I keep coming back to how much I enjoy riding 125's. The only two things I don't like about my 1988 KX125 is the power can be explosive so it's easy to lose traction on technical hills and sometimes on bigger hills with a turn right at the bottom or in the middle, it can struggle. So I am trying to decide I just want to buy a newer 125 and add a flywheel weight, and maybe a 134-144 kit in it, and set up the suspension for my weight or just got with a bigger bike. I see a lot of YZ125's in 1999-2002 range in my price range (Which is only about $1500max).

Any years I should avoid? What do you like/dislike about your bike?

Non-Moto / Older KDX info
« on: August 25, 2010, 09:24:55 AM »
There is a guy who wants to trade me 3 KDX's (two complete, one a basket case) for my 1988 KX125. I love the 125 but would really like a little more power for hills. I wasplanning to try and buy a 200 KTM or KDX) next Spring. The KDX's are a 1984, 1988, and the basket case is unknown year to me. The '84 runs, the 88 does not. He says he has all the parts to turn the basket into a complete bike. I will attach the ad.

So are these years I should avoid? I know parts may be difficult to find. I can't afford a new bike right now and Steahly doesn't even make a flywheel weight anymore for my bike so that is why I am considering the trade. Plus I love a project bike. I bought my KX125 as a basket case and my nephew's KX60 as well. I would like a newer bike but I am still considering this deal. I told him I would give him an answer in a day or two.

Photos & Videos / Dual Sporting Colorado
« on: August 12, 2010, 06:55:33 AM »
I belong to a local dual sport club and a group of the guys made a trip out to Colorado last week. Here is the photo montage. The creator of this photo set goes by the handle of "Grape Ape", and he is honestly about 6'7", but one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. In the group photos you will notice one gigantic dude, that's him  :) . Though the majority of the bikes are four strokes (and Husabergs), you will see a couple pictures that may make you chuckle. Those are of a 250 2 stroke KTM dual sport towing a broken down, nearly brand new, Husaberg with only 20 miles on the clock out of the woods. I feel really bad for Bob that his brand new $10,000 bike lost the oil pump and trashed his engine, but he is the type that likes to bash on 2 strokes... ;D

No goggles because by the time he got pulled out they were so fogged over he couldn't see, lol. But not one stall or crash, and today was his first time ever with a clutch. I have a video but don't have it uploaded yet. I want to see if I can reduce the size a little before I do. I told him we need to work on getting him sitting farther forward before he starts riding faster.

Technical / KX60 shifting issue.
« on: August 06, 2010, 08:37:54 AM »
So the KX60 I just finished for my nephew is having a weird shifting issue. It downshifts perfectly. But once you shift from 1st to 2nd, from 2nd gear up the shifter sticks and you have to bump the shifter down 1/4" or so. Then it resets and shifts. I just replaced the return spring thinking it was weak and not returning the mechanism. The new spring didn't fix it. I took a quick video, my nephew is shifting on the other side and I was holding the assembly in (like the cover would do). You can see after second gear he has to bump the shift lever down to get the mechanism to to return to shift up again. Only on upshifts does it stick, downshifting is beautiful.  I guess I might just order a new gear change mechanism because everything else is new including the shift lever on the other side. The shaft is not bent I have checked it three times now. My nephew is dying to ride and I am getting irritated. In all my years of wrenching I've never been stumped before, LOL.

Any ideas? Please tell me what I am doing wrong because I am about to just make the bike a two speed, LOL.

Non-Moto / What is your trail set up?
« on: July 23, 2010, 12:50:07 PM »
Here's mine. 1988 Kawasaki KX125. MSR Dflector handguards, Moose toolbag, Sunline bars, frame guards, rear disc guard, rejetted, two teeth larger rear sprocket than stock. I bought this as a basket case last winter and completely rebuilt it. I'd still like to get front fork boots and front disc guard. I love riding small bores, always have. Don't laugh at my homemade bike stand  :) .

...to buy this??   :D :D

http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/mcy/1809565086.html

1976 Maico MC AW 250cc Ready for vintage Motocross racing or to just add to your collection, it's a great collectable. Fresh from an estate where it sat under a cover in a garage for over thirty years. It has some rust on the upper fork tubes and the handle bars are rusty. The carburetor was rebuilt and the beautiful aluminum tank was rinsed out and it stared right up and runs perfect. Clutch and all five gears work as they should, the front and rear sprocketts look like the bike was not ridden to much from new, but the chain is a new gold 520 as the old chain had dried out and was stiff. If you are looking for a great bike to go vintage racing with, this would be a great choice and its ready to go. Call with any questions office 949-458-5810 cell 949-350-9909

General Two Stroke Talk / 1994 KX60 rebuild/refurbish
« on: June 13, 2010, 08:43:54 AM »
If this is the wrong forum, please feel free to move it. I have had a couple guys ask me to keep them informed of the rebuild so I thought I would just start a thread to document the work start to finish.

I bought a 1994 KX60 for my nephew recently. I got it really cheap and it came with a new cylinder. The guy said it just needed a piston/rings/gasket kit, but I suspected bottom end issues because these 60's are known to for that. Upon tearing into the engine I found a bad crank; the lower rod bearing race broke and that is what fragged the top end. I hope to start ordering parts this week. The frame and swing arm are getting repainted OEM colors. This is not a restore, just a refurbish so my nephew has a good looking, clean running bike to ride.

I am looking for opinions on engine finish. Should I paint it, or sand/bead blast it?

At the guys house:

About an hour after we got home:

I spent about an hour the other day and finished tearing the engine down:

Bad parts so far, well everything but the oil glass I broke, lol. I was pushing it out so the cases were bare for finish and I managed to hamfist it and crack the glass haha.

Vintage Two Strokes / 1976 Cycle Magazine Maico test
« on: May 27, 2010, 08:48:16 PM »
Awhile back a friend scanned in a bunch of old Cycle magazines. I forgot all about it, and I am not tired at all tonight so I was reading through them. I thought some might be interested in this bike test I came across in the January 1976 issue.

You have to use your scroll bars unless your screen is big enough (I have a laptop and have to) and the test concludes on page 4, bottom right side.
