General Two Stroke Talk / Re: 2010 Maico MMX in action
« on: March 19, 2010, 01:19:28 PM »
I have a 93 320 and the power is similar to a KTM 300. More low end than any 250, lots of mid-range and revs out almost as high as a 250.
The thing with the Maico's power is the more gradual, or smooth power delivery that the magazine tests back in the day didn't like, saying it would make you ride lazy, and now are praising 4Strokes for the same type of power.
I hope I am able to try one of these new Maico's, and I don't care what size the motor is, as long as I can try one out.

Hopefully there will be a lot of 2 strokes at the event. But, I will still have to wear earplugs if the 4 bangers are there. And I agree, if the 4S were Actually as quiet as the 2S they would not have the power they now enjoy.

John,
that is exactly the reason I have not been back to a National MX since 06 at Southwick. My ears were still ringing the next day from the exhaust noise. I get to attend AMA Pro events for free and I don't go!
There is no way the sound levels are in the 95DB range with these modern 4S. 130DB seems closer to the mark.

I never got the story on what happened to Woody's track. He helped me out big time one day( mid 70's) by brazing a mount on my pipe so I could ride a second moto. I loved that upward sloping start and jumping down the hills to the different levels like ski-jumping.

WoW, it's been 30 or so years since I raced Waterboro, Maine, but I know that left us not long after my last time there in the early 80's. That was one of my favorite tracks along with Pepperell, Southwick, and Ludlow. We had quite a few tracks in the 70's and 80's that are not around now. Lanesboro, Monson, Pine Top, and there were twice as many in the 60's!
I remember going to Southwick to race the 250 Expert class with my new 78 250 Maico and having to ride two qualifiers because there were 112 riders signed up for that class alone!!!  There used to be 6 heats of 125 novices because 350 novice 125 riders would show up. I heard there were barely 100 riders total showing at a few Southwick events in the last couple years.
What other tracks were in Maine as of late. I remember Lisbon. If you had your own series it must have been more northern Maine.

Coming off my Maico 490, I tried a freinds YZF250 out and had to bring it in after 4 laps because of the ringing in my ears and headache from the exhaust noise. I have a newer HJC helmet but I should have also had earplugs. I won't ride a used 4S now for fear of being the guy on it when it blows and feeling responsible for some of the bill to fix it.
Just to get back on topic, I'm riding this coming weekend in some tight trials type woods on a 74 Montesa 250 enduro. Can't wait!

The 2-stroke sound is what's needed at all our riding area's because they are so much quieter. All my old riding spots are now closed because of the 4banger noise pollution.
I have a private track on my property now and the rule is NO 4 strokes unless they are one of the really quiet XR's or XL foo-foo design. I hate to turn good freinds away, but I am not going to lose my own private track for a noise issue. I never get noise complaints with the 2-stroke only rule.

MXLord, no that wasn't me, we started as a dealer in the early 90's. We mainly do parts, repairs, mods and restorations. I still have about 30 Maico's with half of them running bikes. I still have the AW400 I bought new in the crate in 77.

These are exactly the opinions I stated when I first seen my cousins Vertimati 501 some 10 years ago. I told him these new 4-strokes might be fun when new, but they're going to be very expensive to own and race. He found out the expensive way. In four months the thing was trash. He ended up stuffing a KX250 motor in it.
If you think running these 4-strokes are expensive to run on gas, you should see the money the pro-hillclimb and drag race guys spend to keep these time-bombs going using Nitro fuel.
I've seen plenty of engines explode all their internal parts all over the ground and into the crowd at AMA pro-hillclimbs in the last 20+ years.
I used to spend only about $300 a year to keep my 84 CR500 nitro/alky burner running.
That barely covers the valves for the new 4-stroke mx bikes.
2-stroke motors are actually easy to run exotic fuels in.

Being part of the only Maico dealership in New England, all this attention to this great brand on this site has been heartwarming, to say the least. It sure would have been great to see the factory when it was in operation.
