I should first say that I'm speaking of rear wheel horsepower and, secondly, we all know that to compare readings obtained on different dynos is like comparing apples and oranges.Having said that,I recall having read recently a Cycle magazine test of an 81 Maico 490 and the dyno test states a peak output of approx. 50 hp.I own a newer Maico 500 that I estimate at 60 hp and I have ridden 81 490's (I have one stored away in boxes) so that would put the 83 490 halfway between at 55 hp.If you look at dyno readings of old big bore Maicos what is very surprising is not the hp readings (though very good even now) but rather the peak torque figures - modern 450 four strokes look puny by comparison.

Any of the last of the CR500s should be around 60 hp and the 83 Maico 490 about 53 -55 hp.The numbers don't tell the story though,I own an 83 490 and that motor generates a lot of torque and is actually quite violent. It hits almost like a giant 250 and wears you out untill you learn to really meter the throttle.

Though the Service Honda CR500s are gorgeous machines, that CR500 engine is rather dated in that it is a non powervalve motor. All of the big bore Maicos are powervalve motors and you can definately feel the difference when you ride them, very smooth and very fast.

From what I understand, when the last of the Dutch Maicos slipped into recievership Wulfsport of the U.K. bought all of the pre 83 parts, tooling etc..What this means is that it is now possible to buy a brand new vintage Maico from Wulfsport.

Mr. Clasen,
What I do not need is an image of you ready to leave for your favorite offroad event (unless I'm invited).
What I do need is step by step instructions on how to load an image into the forum so that my brain, already suffering from decades of twostoke fumes and thousands of miles(KM's) of offroad jarring, can figure it out. That is unless you don't want to see the mystery motorcycle I am about to load!

What is the procedure for posting an image to the forum? I must be missing something because I have had no luck so far. Thanks.

Hello Helmut,
That reed cylinder, was it stock Sachs or something special that someone fabricated? If it was stock, what model of Sachs/Hercules would have used it? Thanks.

Hello Helmut,
I'm almost 1.93 metres in height (6-5).The reason that I pursuaded Horst to give me the Ceriani's is that the forks had 13mm more travel then the Zoke's and far superior action. These Ceriani's were special forks that he had on a Sachs MC250 and the travel exceeded that of the stock Marzocchis. On a different subject, where did you get that reed cylinder?

I forgot to mention that when I purchased my GS6 from Horst he put on a set of factory Ceriani's from an MC250 he had.

Helmut,
I am sorry to hear about Horst. It doesn't seem that long ago that I spoke to him.He eventually sold the bike, but he always promised me a ride on his factory wankel sixdays.Horst told me that he sold the bike to a collector in the U.S..On a happier note, the GS6 250 was sold in Canada but not the U.S. and was a 6 speed ISDT qualifier based on the motocross chassis. If you go to the Greg's Cycle website (Calgary) he has an image of one posted. The motor was FAR superior to the Husqvarna 250 I raced in 1980.

Hello Mr.Clasen,

My name is Carl Heldt, I live in Kamloops,British Columbia and I used to own a business (motorsports) in Vancouver. You probaly don't remember but we spoke by telephone a couple of times.I raced a GS7 and a GS6 as a kid in the late 70's.I got to know Mr.Kempter during this time and ,yes, my German is very "rusty".I'm quite certain you met a friend and riding partner of mine, the late Dan Amor.Dan was a multi medalist at the ISDT/ISDE.I'm busy restoring a 1251 6B and my GS6 250.When I'm done I will send you pictures.Thanks.

The old two stroke Lawnboys were the best, flip 'em over, pull off the muffler and ram a drill through the exhaust ports - instant port job. Remove the govenor(I did'nt say that) and go mowing. You had to wear full protective gear and the mower would shoot rooster tails of grass 30 feet in the air.As for Sachs wankels,go to Youtube and listen to the Norton rotary racebikes (2 F & S wankels side by side),it will send chills up your spine.

Herr Classen,
I own a 1979 Hercules GS6 250 with factory Sachs airshocks. It is my alltime favorite motorcycle. When Fichtel and Sachs discontinued offroad motorcycle production it truly was a sad day and then accountants and shareholders gutted and dismembered the company.Sachs had such incredible potential and they through it all away. The company could have been where KTM is now - in the 70's you could have taken the KTM factory and shoved it into one of F & S's warehouses in Schweinfurt, that's how big they were.By the way,how is Mr.Kempter doing these days?
