Technical / Re: 2009 yz250 break in.
« on: February 13, 2010, 06:26:01 PM »
My break-in (the one that Robert Reynard uses/recomends) Is three heat cycles with a complete cool down between (make sure it is not lean but don't tune it until your done with your final break in).  Ride it for a moto 20 min or less then change the oil.  There is no need to change the oil before it is ridden, it is a 2t the motor oil is changede every time it fires  :D.

Nice bike.  Thanks for breaking it down for me.  It is kinda jacked up that PC doesn't include ti springs on ther "works" suspension, (to me works means the works ie. everything).  Just out of curiosity how much weight savings was there in replacing everything with TI hardware.  What kind of frame gusseting did you have done and was it a noticable difference?  How often did you have to freshen that engine?  What was the cost difference when you switched to the 4t?  Thanks.

This is exactly what he is talking about, 7-8k for a bike and then you need to spend 3k+ on making it rideable.  So your looking a 11k just to get started and if you ride 4 hours a weekend 3 weekends a month your looking at rebuilding your bike every other month.  What was once a fun relitively inexpensive sport for your working class is now a CEO's play ground.

Dogger, I am currious to how you spent 17,000 on a 2t.  The only way I can see 17k is if you put 5k worth of suspension on it.  I have everything done to my engine and it cost me less than 2,500 parts and labor, now this is with me removing the engine myself but still.  I am not calling you a liar, I am just trying to understand.  I know that labor might have cost more back then because 2t's were more popular.

West,

I have to ask why are you wanting to go with a brand new 2 stroke?  I know about frame fatigue and all that but, most (i would say 90%) riders do not ride their bikes hard enough to fatigue the frame.  Other than that the only thing you would have to replace is some barrings and seals.  You can buy a used one and completley I mean completely deck it out for less than what your are going to spend on a new bike.

The same engine thats in my cr, when Robbie was on it was getting a new head gasket every 6 hours and a new piston every 20, and every 2 or three pistons = full rebuild.  I have ridden a 09 crf450 that was putting down 68hp and its hard to compare the hp but I will say my 2t is alot more fun to ride.

Good to hear.  Hows the bike did you get the top end rebuilt?  Is it still stock?  Have you got a chance to do another AX?

West,

You don't need to alter the displacement of a 2t 250 to hang with the 450's.  If you keep it stock displacement you will still be able to compete in the 250 class as well.  Last weekend at a local track there was a guy on a bone stock brand new yz250 and he was whooping up on some pro riders, and i don't mean local pro but PRO.

This is what I just did, pick up a 250 2t of your choice, strip it down and build it up from the ground up.  Have a reputable shop (ie Reynard Modifications, Robert has extensive knowledge on 2t's and can make some SERIOUS power) completely build up your motor, get your suspension set up for your skill and weight and hit the track.  I just finished doing this to my cr250, and the thing is amazing!!!!  When all was said and done I had about the cost of a bran new bike in it, but this one is set up and customized to me and my riding.  I am in it for about 2k labor 1,500 parts and 2k for the original bike, so for about $5,500 (these are rough figures) you have your race bike done.  If you want to get crazy you could pick up a set of used A-kits and have them rebuilt and you would still be under the price of a new 4t.

Another thing to consider is that ,at least in the mid west, in the 30+ class alot of riders are carring about 30+ lbs with them as well, and weight robs hp and torque like a fat kid after cake!

I think it is funny he is trying to make fun of people that don't know anything, but then you look at his other videos and he is a total goon, who tries to work on his RM but just jacks it up more than before he started.

Yeah they would.  The AMA wants another "super star" like McGrath.  They changed the tracks for ricky as well.  Just look at a track from the mid 90's then one from the mid 00's.  The track from the 90's could be ran in either direction (the landings were the same as the take off's).  In the 00's timing was not as much as a factor as was marbles enough to twist the throttle.  I am not trying to take away from RC, he is an amazing rider and I don't think anyone would challenge his work ethic, but he is better on a fast less technical track.  Just my .02

I wish I worked for a magazine, I would love to interview Kevin Windam or John Dowd and get their take on was has happened and is currently happening to OUR sport.  I belive the John Dowd interview would be the more productive, as he is not currently on anyone's payroll.

I don't belive that MXA would.  They have made many statements and articles in suport of 2-strokes!

MXA had the rant article about how boring a 4t is and how only real men ride 2t's a couple months ago as well.  They also said about the new 150sx that "in the hands of a agressive rider this bike could race with and beat 20f's"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had read this article ,or a similar one, about a year ago so I am sure some of you have seen it or at least heard about it.  I know that it is not a dirt bike but the first two words in our website are TWO STROKE, and these guys are building some amazing two stroke's.  We could all learn something from super bike racing, about how the fat money hungry 4 strokes can take over a beloved 2t sport.

An interview with the shop.
