Or an annoying orange! Orange or blue, better than red, green or yellow these days. Bring them all back and lets have a shootout.

General Two Stroke Talk / Chain tension
« on: April 24, 2013, 02:34:35 AM »
Maybe covering something's you already know but here we go. First the wheel must be aligned directly with the counter sprocket by on a crate with the bike in gear put reverse tension on the chain. Eyesight from the rear sprocket looking up to the counter should have the chain looking like a straight line. Once this is correct when adjusting tension turn each adjuster bolt counting 1/6 turns and turning the other side by the same number of 1/6 turns to maintain the original alignment. As for the actual slack the best way to figure for any bike is to remove the shock and lift the rear wheel to the point where the most slack is needed to avoid over tension. Adjust to "not tight ,not loose". Install the shock back on and now find a 2 or 3 finger spot to gauge things by as a baseline and use this going forward. repeat for each bike you own as the are all close but slightly different (modern bikes). Occasionally check the alignment from the rear to the countershaft (and after any crash) and you should be good. I have never thrown a chain since my 78 RM100 so I think my methods (which is just chains 101) works.

I suck at this and I really should be better. I was Pro when it came to reading about bikes, races, and riders but a sub-novice at racing them. The JD killed some cells over the years I guess.

Can't believe how far South this thread has gone. Take away the keyboards, load up all the bikes (old, new, KTM, Yamaha, TM, whatever) and meet up somewhere for some rides and comparisons. Then discuss with a beer (or whatever) in hand over a campfire. All the attitude would go away and we could agree to disagree meaning we are all on the same page. Bench racing 101.

I raced 338 once and swore it off forever. Yes, I am weak. At least New Egypt was shorter so I could survive the laps. Great video and to those not familiar with the track the Gopro does not come close to showing how rough the track is so you can really see how fast he is going. A 2nd an NESC event at 338 in the A class is top 10 or 15 at a national. Just look at Dowd's record.

Well I tried the ATF and did not really believe it would do anything. It Worked!! There is still an occasional false neutral but I can not believe the difference it made. I met a guy with an 06 RM 125 that did the same thing from 2nd to 3rd. He said there is an aftermarket shift fork that will fix it for good but did not remember who makes it. Anyone know?

So after googling this over and over I checked with a friend who races GNCC/ISDE vet class for years on Suzuki's. He gave me the same answer all the searches gave me. It might be this, it might be that, try this or try that. Before tearing it apart I am going to run ATF in it and change several times to fluch out the gear box. May try 80W gear oil. In our conversation it came up that he has an 05 RM250 he has for sale. Bike was raced for two years, engine rebuilt, and was to be backup bike for 07. Never used again. What's the good and bad on this year? Maybe I just sell the 125 and put him on a 250.

Thanks for the reply's. No offense meant for Suzuki gear boxes but this is my history. In 1980 I had a RM100 with a few extra neutrals. Heard that was normal as most had extras after some time. In 88 I bought a RM250. Was a nice bike but had a false neutral between 3rd and 4th. Popped out of gear on the face of a 70' table top. I specifically remember being upside down and thinking "I need to get away from the bike". Lived to tell the story and more to it. Now my kid has this 125. Only does it (It seems) between 2nd and 3rd under hard acceleration. Glad to hear that they have been good for the last 20 years so I can find something wrong rather than a gremlin that will never go away. Coming apart next week with the micro fishe open on a tablet.
As a side note this thing can carve a much sharper line than my 12 YZ125 and seems to give nothing up on stability. Have not ajusted the YZ much yet but I doubt it will ever corner like this thing. So much for being "outdated". 8)

2001 RM 125. There is a false neutral between 2nd and 3rd. I got a friend who can split the cases and fix anything but since Suzuki's are infamous ( I have a BIG get off story from 88 on a 250) for false neutral's I am hoping someone can point to a fix. My kid is getting very aggressive. What was once a minor issue is now a major one. Help, Spring break and Durhamtown right around the corner. Thanks, Mike.

General Two Stroke Talk / stewart says bring 2 strokes back
« on: February 20, 2013, 09:38:32 PM »
I don't think Stewart wants one for fun. I think he believes he would be faster on one. His style is to make the bike do whatever he wants.
