General Two Stroke Talk / Re: need help, lets hear it!!!
« on: February 12, 2010, 09:13:17 AM »
As far as racing goes I ustacould. After many years off the bike I tried a 2000 YZ426. Heavy bike that was easy to ride and handled like a dream. So I think 4T is for me and I buy it (used). I use and love the bike so much I do the "smart" thing and get myself a shiny new 03 YZ450 since 4T is the way to go. Worse bike I ever owned. It did not break, it just sucked to ride. Forks harsh, front end slides and those were the good points. The biggest gremlin was the way the power came on. I rode CR500's back in the day and I never detuned a bike untill this POS. Anyway I suffered five years with the bike riding with my kids now and then without much interest in my own riding. Up in NY at Ace at the end of 07 Sales gut from D-Rec says we got one 08 YZ250, you want it? I buy it without knowing anything about it other than I am going back to 2T to give riding one more try. This is long winded so I will sum it up like this. This is the best powered, best handling, by far best suspended bike I have ever owned. I am a kid again and now my kids get to ride a lot. 3rd season is 1/2 over (FL we ride all winter) and not one thing has ever broken. I feel guilty about top end but all the compression is still there. Anyway this is Rock solid to ride stock or to build up to any level.

After a bad experience with used outboard that came with my dingy I bought a new 5HP Honda 4 stroke. Bad move. Never ran right and always snapped the shear pin on the prop just by putting it in gear. Anyway it would not plane off my little 9' boat with me and my 2 young sons in it. After years of grief I gave it away and bought a new Yamaha 8HP 2 stroke. I went up in HP so the boat would plane off. Well guess what? the new motor was crazy fast. That old honda must have been 2 or 3 HP. Too bad someone relieved me of that Yamaha off my dock one night. I never did have good lock with small boats.

Technical / Re: YZ250 Rad Valve, and/or pipe?
« on: January 12, 2010, 06:34:02 AM »
I used the Vforce on my 08. I didn't notice a difference but I put on my Oring chain at the same time so I guess the evened each other out. I tried a Pro Circuit pipe and got more power but traction went way down. I went back to the stock pipe since power is strong but manageable and I can always feather the clutch for power. Its more fun to ride that way as well. FYI bleed the air from your forks every ride (not every ride day, every ride) since they build up a lot of pressure quickly.

General Two Stroke Talk / Cr500 project
« on: December 22, 2009, 06:10:24 PM »
I have an 87 CR500 that I am thinking of using the engine in a modern frame. My 08 YZ250 is the best bike I ever owned. Does anyone know if the engine will fit if I could find a chassis? I have a welder that can handle this but I think there may be more to consider than "is there enough room".  My other option is to modernize the 87. Downside to that is old seals, bearings, radiators, and other parts that eat up $ or are hard to find. Like the Cummins in my truck that old 87 engine is all I really care about. I just need a way to enjoy that deeeep braaaaap of the 500. Thanks.
