My 1981 YZ465
Frame up restoration, Eric Gorr motor work + taken out 2mm for better piston supply.  Race Tech custom shock and emulators up front.
Amazing motor and a HOOT to race.
Now if she just had brakes like my TE300 Husky....

Vintage Two Strokes / Re: 1989 Cr 250 rebuild

Im with COOP - 89 is modern to me !!!
(but then I remember Jones on a CR250 silver tank too)

There are also dedicated forums on the WWW for these brands and years - amazing the knowledge that is out there and cross match/fit parts too.
Marks Motorcycle Swapmeet is an amazing source too - he has a web and now FaceBook set up.

I have found that going to a Fiche site and find the part I am searching for, then take that part number and just search for it - that 'other machines it fits' or goes to comes up - did this on a vintage rebuild for the clutch 'ball and rod' set up and was searching for just the ball on this old YZ - come to find out, the parts search came up with it being used in Yamaha outboard motors and other engines...  :D

RMATV parts fiche loads quick for OEM parts and makes it easy for a 'jump off point' for searching.

Good luck !!

Having done countless Frame Up restorations on vintage MX bikes - as these target bikes get older, its wise (if you can) to snag up bikes/motors etc from the same or comparable years (parts sharing) and start building your own parts warehouse - I did that with my YZ465 - parts are becoming very hard to find.

good luck !!
Post photos when done and in progress

Nicely done documenting this whole process....looking forward to more 'discoveries' (hopefully NOT this bad) with this YZ.

So many riders dont know about this stuff, and thats okay, no better time to learn than NOW.
Pay me now with a bit of preventative maintenance (low $) or pay me later when it fails (High $$$$$) and end your ride or race....
do the math!

Sadly, it is the norm of any and every used machine I have ever bought....
Been doing this dirt bike thing since the early 70s...and learned through the years (yes the hard way) the HUGE difference between
preventative maintenance
vs
reactive maintenance

Wife at first (well she still does)thought (knows) I was NUTS off my rocker when I bring a brand new bike home and I take it to the frame bearing and electric/controls wise.
Grease every bearing
Inspect and dielectric grease every electric connection
tighten the bolts and those I bolts and nuts I take off to do the tear down are thread lubed.
I keep ride and maintenance logs on all my bikes (amazing for resale to have that documentation) and I know how long its been since I did 'X' or Y or Z and how many hours on the oil, top end etc (on top of engine hours)

I dont mechanical DNF (my body does now LOL )

Used bikes?
I AUTOMATICALLY assume the $$$ to replace high stress bearings etc when I get it home - cause my 40+ years of experience tell me the PO didnt maintain it (even if it looks tight) and she is gonna need 'RMATV' parts ordering love to get right.
