General Two Stroke Talk / Is This the future of dirt bikes?
« on: July 12, 2012, 03:06:20 PM »
So I spent quite a while addicted to RC. Haven't been into it in a while, but my favorite thing to do was take an 8th scale nitro chassis and convert it to brushless electric. I would certainly ride an electric bike. I'd still want my 2t's of course, but it would be awesome to have an electric for zipping around my property. All the power, all the time. One of my buddies works at a golf car shop. They do a lot of AC conversions there. 1,500+ amp controllers and huge battery arrays. Really cool, and some of those carts are STUPID fast.

I voted that my carb works fine. It would be kind of neat to have a programmable EFI system though. I rather enjoy jets and needles though!

This was posted over at KDXRIDER. I hope it's OK that I re-post it here. I really hate to see yet another good riding area close. Please sign!

We have a motorsports complex in Phoenix called Speedworld that has been here for over 50 years (1961). Now, the county is forcing them to close because the former owner didn't get the proper permits for changes he made to the property. They are saying they can reopen once all the permits are taken care of (dealing with the county on this could literally take years!) but that effectively will kill Speedworld all together with no income to pay for permits and whatever else the freakin county wants them to do. You can read an article from a local paper here: http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2012/06/07/20120607speedworld-must-close-maricopa-county-says.html

OK, here is where you guys/gals can help out. Speedowrld has started an online petition to try and get the county to let them remain open while getting everything up to what the county wants. Now, it doesn't matter if you live in AZ or not so I implore everyone to sign it please. Even to our members to the North in Canada, South in Mexico, and anywhere else in the world, please help us to keep this facility alive! Here is where you can sign it: http://signon.org/sign/keep-speedworld-raceway.fb10?source=c.fb&r_by=4710941

There is 48.5 which is standard, and then 49.0mm, 49.50mm,50mm,and 50.50mm. Should i keep the stock bore or go alittle over because of the used cylinder?

You would not go to a larger size piston just because it's a used cylinder. If you do have to go up a size, you would do so because the cylinder is damaged and has to be bored and re-plated or sleeved. If the plating is in good condition, a stock cylinder is your best option. If the cylinder is out of spec, a simple strip and re-plate and again the STD piston would be the next option. If there is actual damage to the cylinder that requires welding or boring, then you would be looking for a larger piston.

Of course, this assumes the kx85 is plated? I believe it is....

Looking good, yep! I just went through a similar thing with kdxrider.net. Lots of work involved in moving the site and trying to preserve the data. Hats off to ya!

You should be able to re-plate and install new piston and rings for around $300. No sleeves!

General Two Stroke Talk / KDX 200 or a KTM 200
« on: April 12, 2012, 12:56:07 PM »
my point to the fork upgrade statement I made was that you can put a better fork on the bike, but you're gonna have to re spring and revalve both ends to get it to work right, so the swap in itself is not really an upgrade.

I'll assume you're not all that familiar with the KDX. It's horribly unbalanced from the factory, with the rear spring and valving being good for a rider up to about 180-200lbs, while the forks are sprung for riders up to about 125lbs and soft as hell, with no rebound adjustment. Not sure why they did that, but most USD fork swaps get you closer to right than the factory setup. If it had the stock forks, new springs would be needed at a minimum, regardless. So yes, the fork swap is definitely an "upgrade". I guess Kawi was thinking about this being an entry level trail bike and ridden slowly by most riders, so they made the front forks as soft and plush as possible. I don't know.

For Sale / 1994 kx125 parts

Eventually, I hope. I decided not to use the engine from my E bike, so I'm watching out for a donor H series KDX. A few things will be easier with the H series engine, including pipe fitment and head stay fabrication.

Any interest in some kx125 bits? This stuff came from a 94. I think most stuff will fit 94-98, but I am not 100% sure on that so please check.

I have the stock PWK carb. I believe it's a 38mm, appears to be in good shape
Have cylinder, with worn plating. Will need to be re-plated but is in good condition otherwise. No deep gouges or anything
Cylinder head, good condition
FMF pipe
FMF silencer
D.I.D. rear rim with Talon hub, great condition, good bearings.
All electronics, coil, CDI, stator, etc.
Complete bottom end, transmission and crank appear to be in good shape. LH case half was busted and epoxied where the clutch actuator is. I believe the LH case to be trash, but perhaps it could be fixed. Personally I wouldn't bother with it. If there's any interest in internals from the transmission, clutch, or the crank by itself, I have no problem splitting the cases and digging out parts from it.

I am hanging onto the frame, forks, shock, swingarm, front wheel assembly, airbox, and front/rear brakes, and plastics. Pretty much everything else can go. If you're interested in something, let me know and I'll grab you some pictures. You can see a shot of the complete bike here before it was torn down. http://twostrokemotocross.com/forum/index.php/topic,3244.0.html

I'm located in Boone, NC, if anyone is close by and wants to have a look at anything.

Thanks!

Jason.

General Two Stroke Talk / Well guys I have some very bad news...
« on: October 30, 2011, 11:41:51 PM »
Whew, that's a relief! I thought something really bad had happened.

You're still looking at a high performance 4-stroke that is still almost twice the displacement. And it has a larger power spread, and more torque. I'm not surprised that it won out. The power spread of a 250 s-stroke compared to a 250F is way more even. Even though the 2-stroke makes more peak power, the 250F makes up for it with power spread, making them virtually equal.

This.....

The KDX has it's original 200cc motor in place. While I imagine a kx5 engine in the 125 would indeed be off the hook, I'm not sure how difficult the transplant would be. Putting a 200cc engine into the 125 is pretty easy. I have decided against tearing down my KDX, and am going to keep my eye out for an H series KDX donor bike. I have too much time and money invested in the KDX to feel good about using the motor and parting out the rest. The H series engine will be a bit easier to work with. Head stay in the right place, pipe fitment will be easier, etc..

Technical / Re: Whats wrong ?
« on: October 11, 2011, 06:01:49 AM »
What happened was No. 23 is a rubber bung which plugs the idle casting so the fuel is drawn through the main circuit.
The bung had swollen ( not sure why but may have been ethanol ) and blocked the passage between the main and idle castings. There is a diagonal passage between the main & idle castings.
At idle, the idle jet was supplying enough fuel to run properly but once throttle was applied there was not enough fuel passing through the idle circuit.
Remembering the idle circuit operates from idle through to 1/2 throttle , the motor was starving for fuel until full throttle when the main supplies all the fuel.
Have never seen it before but now I trim the bung 1-2mm to make sure it can't happen. ;D

PS. The part No.s you asked about ford are for the choke/enrichment device.. Electric solenoid. It squirts fuel into the manifold.

Hey, one of my old kawi's has a rubber ring that does the same sort of thing, but it's for the main jet. Took me forever to figure out why it bogged to death when the throttle was opened more than half!
