Non-Moto / rode a direct injection 2 stroke! Ski-doo 600 etec. Awesome
« on: April 17, 2013, 08:57:45 PM »
been meaning to post this for a few weeks....at the beginning of April i got a chance to test ride a 2013 ski-doo Renegade at the Pat's Peak Snowmobile Hillclimb event in New Hampshire. 600cc twin cylinder direct injection. Been reading about etecs for several years now and finally i would get the chance to see for myself! Believe me, it didn't disappoint. Started immediately to a smooth, steady idle. A bit like - dare i say it - a 4 stroke. Once underway the thing that struck me was the low end torque, the YANK this thing had from way down low. The mid range was awesome, i kept pulling impromptu wheelies with no effort. The thing would gather speed so quickly that i ran out of room to really test the top end, since we were on a designated test ride trail. But it screams! One thing i had heard was that the etec could never be put on a dirt bike because of the rapid on/off throttling required. I am here to say that is complete  ;Dbullshit. The trail i took was totally rutted and i purposely chopped/gassed the throttle many times to see - perfect response, no stumbling. I truly hope this engine (or half of it) gets dropped into a mx'er.

Non-Moto / Jet Skis
« on: April 16, 2013, 04:24:04 PM »
I have 2 jet ski's, both from the 90's - a Seadoo GTX twin cylinder 700 and a Polaris SL650 triple. They've been sitting around for many years doing nothing but i worked on them all winter - nearly done restoring them. Restored the trailer too - bought the 2 x 4's and the carpet at home depot = new bunks! Funny, the modern 4 stroke jet ski's kinda take the Personal out of Personal Watercraft. i mean those things are freakin boats! and $$$$.

i've always been a huge fan of single-sided swingarms. And i've hoped for (in vain) single-sided front suspension to appear on bikes. Not talking about hub center steering, but a single fork that wraps around to a large hub on one side. So my dream is a motocross bike with single-sided suspension front and rear. Cool looks and easy to work on. And different  :)

My other day dream is a big bore DI 2 stroke with a rear exiting exhaust. The frame down tubes would part to accomodate the fatty part of the chamber. Since the entire "carburetion" takes place at the top of the cylinder head, there would be a simple intake design in front of the cylinder to channel air into the relocated reed valve.

General Two Stroke Talk / Cycle World Two Stroke article
« on: September 02, 2012, 01:57:32 PM »
what's new is that no less an authority than Cycle World has published an article about it. Who knows, maybe it won't be released any time soon. I too have heard about KTM's direct injection for many years now and i've stopped holding my breath. But the fact is, is that Ski-Doo has turned the snowmobile world upside down with their direct injected 2 strokes engines, so the technology is there.

very good article about two strokes in the October issue of Cycle World, and how Husqvarna is poised to release a street legal enduro with direct-injection, and that KTM has theirs in the ready. I especially love the statements about how "4 stroke were more expensive and much more maintenance-intensive, and tended to have exhaust sound that was offensive...putting pressure on mx tracks to quiet down or shut down".
Nice to see one of the most well respected magazines in the entire motorcycle industry speak the truth about 4 strokes. When the di 2 strokes break cover i wonder if the AMA will be forced to reconsider their rules, in order to let this new technology have a chance at competing. Or perhaps the new motors can defeat the 4 strokes, handicap or not!

i won't make this long, only to say that this site is a near daily part of my life. And an important one. Thanks John, thanks Charles!

TMKIWI - that's why Evinrude didnt consult you when they were designing their oversquare DI engine. But i admit, i should have said DI's are no longer "fully" dependant on port timing. When the injector releases its spray into the combustion chamber is now at the discretion of the engineer, not the piston

that highly oversquare piston is what put 4 strokes back in motocross, as it allowed them to rev high to find their horsepower. Totally fair in my opinion - a 250cc engine is 250cc no matter how you slice it.

And THAT is the beauty of direct injection. Because now, 2 strokes can be oversquare!! They no longer need to depend on port timing like conventional 2 strokes. Check this out: one of the DI 2 stroke outboards (evinrude etec) is running 433cc cylinders at 91mm bore X 66mm stroke. Not as oversquare as the 450F's, but oversquare nonetheless. Can you imagine an open class 2 stroke that revs to the moon?!

i've suffered with that since 2002, when MotoGP allowed 990cc 4 strokes to compete with the 500 2 strokes. Honda showed up with a 5 cylinder 990 which promptly won every race. The press, the teams, the manufacturers all hailed it as such an incredible, fantastic machine. 4 stroke was the future they said. All the while i'm thinking they needed more than DOUBLE the engine to finally beat the 500's! Needless to say the cost was astronomical, and now the entire MotoGP grids is only 17 riders. 2 years ago they outlawed the MotoGP 250 2 strokes in place of a SPEC ENGINE 600cc 4 stroke class. And guess what? SLOWER LAP TIMES!! But still they hailed the new 4 strokes. So now the 125's are going, to be replaced with presumably slower 250 4 strokes. There's a mentality out there that i just don't understand...

For those afraid of modern electronics/direct injection neutering their beloved 2 strokes, please go to youtube, type in "Ski-doo 800 etec wheelying" and browse some of the videos.

Then come back here and tell us all how neutered, easy to ride, and 4 stroke behaving they are. sheesh  ::)

i think it's very significant that they put the 2 strokes on equal footing (frame-wise) with their 4 strokes. who knows, it may signal a shift in their corporate strategy.

wow! that is about as frankly put as it gets. i would dearly love to see Yamaha update the bike, though if they're charging premium dollar for 2006 technology what would they charge for 2012 technology?!

No less an authority than Kevin Cameron, technical guru for Cycle World magazine, writes what we've been saying for years now - that 4 stroke motocross was a bad idea. But is it too late to change?

jeez, sorry to see you go John. I joined TSM about a year ago or so and it was one of my favorite sites, visited it daily without fail! Good luck in whatever you do
