General Two Stroke Talk / 200 km/h Maico record attempt
« on: January 21, 2013, 10:46:08 AM »
Damn it, Kiwi, this is my build - been a member here for a while, was planning on putting it up tomorrow.
Oh well, cheers for the intro anyway.

I'm not a complete Aussie, coming from that little land mass below.

General Two Stroke Talk / Any Aussies here...
« on: October 12, 2012, 08:26:08 PM »
Scotty, I'm an Aussie and have bought 8 bikes over so far.
The easiest and cheapest thing to do is to find someone in Aus, I can personally recommend Darren Cheney from mid life crisis imports, who specislises in this.

It'll cost you about $900 freight plus gst and duties, on an AF, probably a tad over $1500 which includes the freight.

The last time I bought a bike I was stupid and had the seller crate it and send themselves. Even though the fright will be a touch less, it's a much more complicated and costly process as the bikes sent as a single consignment and there's so much paper work (will end up costing me $2000).

If you find a guy like Darren (I can recommend someone regardless of where you are) they specialise in doing this, they fill up whole containers and clear them in massive lots. All the paperwork is done and for you it's so much easier.

General Two Stroke Talk / 2 Strokes vs 4 strokes hill climbing
« on: August 08, 2012, 01:08:51 PM »
There's a lot more to it than this.
A lot depends on the terrain, in my experience (I have multiple modern 2 and 4 strokes) small bore 2 strokes really struggle on slower, rocky hills where traction is difficult and you can't carry good speed.

Up smoother tight hills, even slippery ones, small bores are awesome!

Big bore 2 strokes are great up any hill, unless you have to be very sensitive with the throttle.

Generally speaking though if the hills tough, I think a 4 strokes a bit easier to get up on, however the difference is less than it used to be, as modern 4 strokes don't like to lug much.

General Two Stroke Talk / Kostler Maico
« on: July 29, 2012, 06:45:07 AM »
Somethings definitely up with the Kostler website, it usually works without issue.
I tried it about a week ago to look for some parts and had no problems.

Maybe and this is a big maybe, the battle with Maico International for the names rights are getting sorted out which means its effected the content they can have on their site?

Vintage Two Strokes / 84 Maico 250
« on: July 14, 2012, 02:28:58 AM »
Does anyone know if the water cooled 84 Maicos ever made it with a disc brake?
The importance here is eligibility for vintage racing (pre 85 class).

I've an 85 model, which isn't eligible ( must be made in 84 or earlier), and it has the disc.
I've noticed some water cooled drum brake models which I suppose are late 84, but would love to know if any landed a disc before the end of 84.

Vintage Two Strokes / Maico 620 SM

Rob, this is a crazy coincidence!
There's very few Aussies on this board, yet two of them happen to own late Model Maicos, and both live in Tasmania.
I reckon there would only be a handful of late model Maicos in Australia.

What are you plans with the bike?
That thing would be a beast around Symmons, it'd hit a decent speed down the back straight.
In motard form there isn't a whole lot of places to ride that in Tassie.

Would love to check it out in person one day.

Rob, are you in Australia?
The sticker on the swingarm is from an Australia company, which is why I ask.

General Two Stroke Talk / More information for the Maico followers
« on: December 17, 2011, 11:52:55 AM »
Many thanks for the info, Charles.

Please pass our appreciation onto MI for keeping us in the loop too. While the whole situation is obviously very complicated (hence why we haven't been told of anything for ages) it is great they are now clearing all of this up.

General Two Stroke Talk / The Maico Faithful.....
« on: November 05, 2011, 06:12:21 AM »
You can put me in that boat.
All throughout the end of 2010 Id check the Maico International site every day, once they announced the bikes would be released in the new year (rather than slightly early as most are) I stopped worrying, but waited with great anticipation for Jan 1, 2011.
As the months rolled on in 2011 the release got less and less likely, and now were almost into 2012 Maico International haven't released any bikes.

It's quite a sad situation as Id really hoped they'd do well. A bit frustrating that we had endless teasers and plenty of good news, yet nothing but silence when things went cold.

While I appreciate that the whole thing has likely died now, is anyone out there willing to say what happened?

General Two Stroke Talk / Re: Project Two 50 Update - MicroBlue Racing

I didn't follow this project 250 at the time but hats off to everyone involved.
They could have kept doing the same thing that everyone has for years, however they decided to push the envelope in a major way!
History obviously shows they went too far but I am sure much was learnt from the experiment.

Going to trial a cheap chinese kit on either a 85 cc or a in the frame "lost my licence" push bike engines.

That's gold. I bought one of these kits a few years back and enjoyed it for a while, sold it after some time to a friend who, you guessed it "lost his licence and needed to commute to work"!

I imagine that a massive amount of them are bought for this situations.

Glad to see the love for AC/DC, it still impresses me just how big they are the world over, since they started in Australia all those years back. They are the best example I could ever think of where a bunch of guys just play music they enjoy - rather than modify what they do to fit into what's currently in.
It was Malcom and Angus's brother George (who produced many of their albums) that apparently gave them the advice to stick to what they love, George's band the Easybeats stopped having fun and sales slumped when they decided to get too technical, luckily the younger brothers took this advice and never swayed.

One thing I have always found fascinating about AC/DC is for their level of fame and riches (which is absolutely massive) they all do well to keep an extremely low profile (at least in the last 30 years).

I am extremely jealous of anyone who got to see them in a pub before they made it big, I have seen them in a stadium a few times and while a good show, I reckon AC/DC are just a pub band through and through so the big stage stuff doesn't do them justice.

Went to Fremantle last year and said G'day to Bon's statue down near the wharf. They were/are all littler blokes that's for sure!

General Two Stroke Talk / Re: Monster Cup Rules.
« on: October 11, 2011, 02:03:17 AM »
Can anyone confirm the "fuel rule"?

From what I understand with 2 strokes running less compression any restrictions on fuel quality should hamper the hi tech 4 stroke grenades much more.
I can only see this as an advantage for 2 strokes if the fuel octane rating was controlled.

Its the "no lead" clause, not the octane that creates a small disadvantage for the smokers

Damn, can you still actually get leaded fuel in the U.S?
Lol, I just assumed that has been unavailable everywhere for about 10 years.

Monster, would you be willing to measure this up for me?

I have a watercooled Maico 500 and in looking to update the powervalve thought I could get away with one from a CR500.
Unfortunately it is way too big and even with the housing machined out to the max won't fit.

I'd imagine one from a 250 would be a better fit, would just need to know distances between bolt holes and flange size.
If it can be made to fit my bike easily, consider it sold.
