General Two Stroke Talk / Jerry Robin at Lorettas
« on: August 10, 2013, 01:42:36 PM »
And this is because of the quality of the suspension? Or is there a handling difference as well?  More stable on the '07? Less swapping? Better in the air? The '07 motor is easier to manage? More power? That seems like a big difference for bikes that both have 12" of travel, water cooling, and disk brakes and probably weigh within 5 lbs of each other. I guess 20+ years of development really have moved things forward!

I suppose you can compare laptimes to get a sense of that. Of course that quagmire track chnaged from minute to minute so its not quite real...

So do you folks think if Jerry was on a practice track and kept going back and forth between the '07 and '85 bikes that his lap times would be hugely different? What specifically does the '07 do so much better than his trusty '85?

At the training facility he rode at before Loretta's (SOB MX) they did mock races everyday.  On the '85 he was a 5 thru 10th place guy, on the '07 he was 1st thru 3rd regularly.

Obviously those are questions for either Jerry or the people at the training facility helping him.  The only real issue between the two bikes they mentioned were starts.  He would get killed on the 85 and have to make passes, on the 07 he would start up front.  That was mirrored at Loretta's itself where he pulled a monster holeshot in the 2-stroke B/C but never anything in the top 15 in 250B.

damn it! good sources, but nothing in ink yet. good work shawn.

As far as we know anyway, these deals don't get announced usually until the previous contract is up.  But I imagine Mitch and PC don't want him back next year so they would allow him to shop around early.  I do agree either he or Phil Niccoletti are the two free riders who would make an impact.  But I believe everyone else in the top 15 is spoken for or could get on a bike capable of winning.

shawn show me proof that tyla is going to europe. peick is a good one  but untill otherwise its tyla.

According to On Track Off Road who is the main media source for the GPs his name is part of the retooled factory Husky lineup for next year, which will basically be a mirror of the KTM team.  Adam Wheeler is a guy who would know, and Matthes over here confirms he is being told the same thing.

And I agree none of those guys are consistent 10-15 material, but that's who's available that has a history of scoring points and might be willing to race a 2-stroke.  Here's the top 15 in the championship so far, who from this list is willing to part with their current factory supported team to ride a 2-stroke.

1. Ryan Villopoto
2. Ryan Dungey
3. Justin Barcia
4. James Stewart
5. Trey Canard
6. Mike Alessi
7. Andrew Short
8. Jake Weimer
9. Broc Tickle
10. Josh Grant
11. Malcolm Stewart
12. Chad Reed
13. Phil Nicoletti
14. Tyla Rattray
15. Justin Brayton

A KTM 250 sale is most likely a KTM 450F loss. So, does KTM corporate want that? Not clear to me which bike sale nets them more money. That said one would think the KTM service folks net more from the 450F bike being out in the wild then a 250.  KTM has to play this card carefully. How can they present support such that a KTM250 sale takes a sale away from another manufacturer? Seems like that would be the real incentive.

So a rider that wants to by a Japanese brand but sees how well a KTM250SX is doing outdoors might be tempted if they realized how much less they would be spending over a couple of seasons to race one at the local level instead of a 250F/450F.

Or am I just over thinking this? KTM may just want to support any professional organization that puts out a strong organized effort on their hardware?

There is not even the slightest doubt that KTM makes more money from 4-strokes than 2 just by sheer volume.  Just like Yamaha they manufacture just a handful of 2-strokes.  MXA put out numbers for 2013 that KTM produced a total of 54,000 off-road motorcycles.  Of that 12,000 were 2-strokes, and a large portion of those were mini bikes.  I don't think KTM really views 2-strokes as a threat to their income from 450s whether it be from initial purchase or long term parts use.  They know what the market will bear and do what they need to keep demand high.  Yamaha makes and imports just a few thousand YZ 250 units per year so they can keep the price high.

Tyla will be on a KTM next year, but on a factory 450 back in Europe.

Wil Hahn has a ride next year as team mate to Eli Tomac out of a 2nd Geico semi.  Although Wil has a 125 he's rebuilding for himself I don't believe he's raced a 2-stroke since super minis.

Realistic guys who would be willing to ride 2-strokes for some money and score points in my opinion?  Robby Marshall (obviously), Jake Canada, Vince Friese, Cole Thompson, Mike Lieb, and Austin Howell.

Awesome charles, thanks. I thought you would want to keep your exact specifications under your hat. Man a two stroke in Pro AMA Motocross. When was the last one fielded? Anyone know? I mean the absolute last, not just the last factory.

High Point 2011 is the last time I remember.  Ty Newcome and Jeff Gibson put a YZ and a borrowed KTM 250XC into the show.  Gibson's bike still had electric start.  In rained for the 2nd moto and Newcome finished 22nd, nearly getting in the points.  Gibson ended up 25th that moto too.  Gibson tried for the following rounds but didn't qualify again.

Bowers is not racing outdoors, nor has he ever had any success doing it in the past.  But he does have a ride, he just recently signed a 2 year extension with Babbit's Kawi to continue racing Arenacross where he is a man among boys and cleaning house to line his pockets.

He has spent the better part of 450 career injured to some degree.  I haven't seen a breakdown of his rounds raced vs missed to injury but I imagine it's in the 50/50 range.  Some of it wasn't his fault (getting landed on by Stewart) and some was.

Interview was from the PulpMX show a few weeks back.  He talked about buying and riding the YZ he is always seen on now.

Yea, in a recent interview he said while riding a 2-stroke is fun he would never want to race one.  Surprising stance for a guy with no job to take but I suppose he milked enough off his former employers to be picky.  He has had good rides for a very long time.

General Two Stroke Talk / Is southwick gonna be a national or not???
« on: June 01, 2013, 04:43:10 PM »
Yes it's true, this will be the last year of Southiwck as a national.  The reasoning is the track and property are literally in the middle of town.  The property backs up to the local public library and school.  The town is so small that it can't make any revenue off it and public opinion has turned against the noise and problems caused by the race.

That's a real bummer. How long does an injury like that take to heal?

Depends on the degree of the separation.  Often the pain will go away in a few weeks but it can cause long term problems.  Usually without an operation to close the joint back up it will pop back out of place when stressed.

13
What a bummer.  He was running near the top 20 on lap 1 and landed on Canard's downed bike.  Early report is a separated shoulder, so his day and season could be done if he needs surgery to repair it.

Top 4.  Timed qualifying fills 36 gates, the LCQ fills the final 4.  So he will need a good start, he'll be up against 30+ guys.

Their other guy Mike Sottile wasn't on pace, he will have to race his way in.
