Vintage Two Strokes / 1986 maico 320 barrel

Here's the 1986 Brochure.

They didn't have one in 1987 either.

However, the 1989 Brochure does list a 320.

My 1996 Maico 440 is nikasil.   My 1986 500 is not and I had it resleeved.

The original 1986's were red, they turned to blue near the end but they remained blue until 1997.

They produced a 320 in the 90s, not sure the first year of the 320, but 86 was not.

However, all the parts are interchangable and the motors bolt up so a newer 320 engine could fit on an 86 frame and a 320 top end might work on a 250 bottom end provided if the crank needed changed it was also changed.

I would say though that you'd just have to look at the cylinder and determine it yourself.  At some point they switched to Nikasil like I said.  In 86 though, they did not Nikasil.

Maico didn't make a 320 in 1986.  Are you sure you don't mean 1996?  If so, yes, they're nikalsil.  If it's an actual 86 they are liners, but they didn't have a 320 in 86.

Vintage Two Strokes / RM500 Refresh

Looks great!  Will be a fun ride and not too many RM500's around as Suzuki got out of big bores first.

Looking at the pictures though seems that the powerband is prolly rusted, I'd take them out and replace them.  Should be able to find some NOS power bands on ebay, you can use 2 from an RM250 if you can't find an RM500 one.

Cool. First order of business,  toss the toothpick pegs.

That would be a good meme.  Starts out with a picture of a bike in 1975 with small pegs.   Then says 1995 a bike with large pegs and then says 2025 with a bike with a full stair case on the side as the peg with the label "Cry Babies" :)

I had to do a 59T/12T to my 2004 500 as well so I should have just gotten it before putting the new chain on.

I ordered a 59T rear sprocket in case it's still too fast.

They geared these transmissions crazy high as if the MC bikes are going to do Baja.  This bike is supposed to have a 51T/15T stock which I can't even imagine since it feels that 1st is a second right now.

I'm going to try to stick around more often here Coop :)

Before I can ride it I have to fix it up and make the bike mine and just make sure everything's OK.  The bike has a 55T/12T setup and it's still pretty damn fast.  I'm verifying that there's no head leak, seems unlikely, but the coolant level dropped but might just have been air pockets.  The next thing is there is a small hole in the exhaust by the mount I found so will need to fix that but might not have to for a first ride.

Possibly will take it out next weekend if everything checks out.  I've changed all the old stuff and cleaned it up a bit.  I feel a shock rebuild in the future though and probably a topend rebuild in a year, but if I don't have to do it ASAP I'll leave it for a few rides.

The CR has a much harder hit and is not as smooth as the KX.  The KX has a power valve and that gives it more tractable power than the CR and smooths it out.

Don't forget to replace the hand grips too since you usually hold on tighter as the chain stretches.
