General Two Stroke Talk / Draining carbs
« on: January 31, 2023, 04:34:42 PM »
I don't know if this will be seen by anyone as the site seems quiet but I'll post anyway. We have a toyhauler camper and always drain the gas from the bikes by laying them over on both sides so no gas drips smell up the garage area. This also keeps the ethanol from f&*king up the carbs. Or so I thought. Out bikes sat for a few years and while I got both YZ 250's running good the YZ 125 was messed up. Long story short is rather than melt the piston by running too lean I replaced the carb. Fixed it. This was last season.

Get to our first ride this year and all is good. But decide to add extra measure of starting the bikes after draining to make sure carb is dry. The 250's pop off a few RPM's on the fumes left. Empty. But the 125 idled for a few minutes. So that must be why it got messed up. There was still gas somewhere in it.

Point of my post is to recommend drain and start to make sure all the evil ethanol is out of your carb for storage. I live in FL and have a place I can pull camper into to fill up with 90 octane ethanol free so we are running that now. But will still drain and start to keep carbs clean.

General Two Stroke Talk / Re: I'm a damn liar

So after riding at Durhamtown It is apparent I am feeling my age. Turned 59 and it is harder to keep the 125 in the powerband by feathering the clutch. So against my opposition to a big bore kit I am seriously thinking about doing that. Want to stay on the light weight 125 but could use a little more bottom end power for my riding ability which is slipping. Thinking about sending whole engine to Eric Gorr and then back into bike. Thoughts??

Glad to still be able to fly through the woods at my ripe old age!

But not intentional. I posted about a 125 build that never happened. Life and work got in the way.

But, as life would have it we now have 2 250's and a 125 that run great. Many bike bucks and effort spent correcting the ills of sitting so many years. My boys both have the 250's. I am in the 125. 59 tomorrow. And I can still hold the throttle open and feather the clutch. Arriving at Durhamtown GA tomorrow for 4 days of riding. The 250's are 2013 and 2015 Yamahas. Both stock basically.

The 2012 125 Yamaha is now my personal ride. It has Boysen reeds and cage, pro circuit pipe and silencer, but is otherwise stock. Had to replace the carb! F**k ethanol! Replaced fenders, outer clutch cover, flywheel cover, etc> Needs to look nice. New Pro circuit pipe on order to replace the one my kid lumped up.

Any ideas on true performance upgrades would be appreciated. 125 is now a started ongoing upgrade project. Price is no object but only if there is a performance gain. Going to concentrate on suspension settings as that is where most bikes suffer.

Anyway no longer a filthy damn liar. Project underway!

Sorry, can't post the picture.

So just visualize a hottie holding up a sign that says TWO STROKE SMOKE CURES CORONA VIRUS!

WV Hatfield Mccoy trails are good fun. Rockville can be challenging in a good way. Florida is a good option for breaking out of the winter blues. A good trip can be had with all the places in FL to ride that are open all week plus Durhamtown on the way down or back up. Get a buddy or two and do a late winter/early spring road trip. Time it right for Daytona SX if things get back to normal. Burn some Golden Spectro! Ha, I know I'm the only one old enough to still use that.

Cool. Been off the bikes for 2 years now. Life got in the way. Made some money but not worth the years lost. INVITE!! Croom, Hardrock MX, and Durhamtown for 2 stroke fun. Starting this fall and winter. Top end for the 125 has been hanging on the handle bars in a bag for a year now. If ya make it all the way to FL we can do a fishing or beach trip in my boat. As per the web site rules boat is a 2 stroke. Kind of a cheater though. Has valves. Old Detroit Diesels. Still pretty cool though and they fire every revolution.

Know you been through a lot as posted but feels good on a bike anytime. Nomesayin?

Who did the top end? You or a shop? In either case something is assembled wrong. Most likely would not require removal of the cylinder bot you will need to re assemble power valve assembly. While they look complex they are really simple to do.

General Two Stroke Talk / Winter/Spring Florida riding
« on: September 09, 2019, 05:16:13 PM »
Are any of all y'all Headed south this year? Super super busy at work and need to light a fire under my butt to get the bikes ready. 125 just needs top end. That's a 1 hour job. No build. One 250 had rod knock so need to pull that one apart. 6 tires in all. Then we are in business! Hoping to be riding by January.

All our old riding crew went different directions. We are up for any 2 stroke (or 4 for that matter) riding buddies. We do weekends with the camper so dinner and the campfire (and some seriously deep BS bench racing ball bustin) are as important as the days riding. Planning on Croom and Hardrock MX park as they are close. Also open to Durhamtown GA and any other FL spots. See some new ones on RiderPlanet to maybe explore.

If it gets too hot maybe a fishing day on my boat.

Days are going by way too fast. Need to slow it down some and smell the roses.

Roses are 2 stroke MX bikes and 2 stroke outboards!

There is a great video on MXA on when Marty became a big part of MX history.

One of the best things about MX bikes is over the years as needed you can put the whole thing on the back burner and then when the time is right get back into it again. I had several phases of racing in my youth, several attempts to regain my youth (all very unsuccessful!)and many good gears also in a few phases of trail and some MX. It's all very fun and without the need to try and compete I am WAY faster on trails then I ever could of dreamed of. Even got a friend who rode ISDE stuff who used to make fun of how slow I was back in the day who has respect now.

Anyway point is that as most of us are not serious pro riders we get to enjoy all the sport has to offer as an on again/off again way. Due to a tremendous work load I have not touched the bikes in about 14 months. That's gonna change soon and all the kids that used to ride with us are now "Guy's" with jobs and ready to get back into it again so a new mini era is on the way.

But youse guys already know that, right? 8) 8) 8)

Hey John, Mike Sambuco here. My bike (08 YZ250) was the lucky one to me in the first Militia site Pix thanks to Darren at D-rec. Glad to see you posting again. I grew up watching Conboy, Weeks, McMillen, Coen, and even Chucky Hicks as guys I thought I could be like. Boy was I wrong!! ;D ;D. Still goy a corral of 2 strokes as I am now a 2 stroke die hard. 15 YZ250, 13 YZ 250, 12 YZ 125, and even two big old Detroit Diesels in a boat that pump out 650HP each. Yeah, I know they got valves and don't really count but still 2 strokes!

And Racer-X, did you ever think a track so simple looking could have so many bumps? No big jumps, no whoop section, and yet still will separate the men from the boys. Been going to Claverack since 1981! Has not changed on bit and that's a good thing.
