+5 on the practice,practice,practice.
+10 on the motocross school/classes
before you buy a pipe, graphics,or chrome flaming skull valve stem caps buy yourself some motorcycle classes.

Guys, on the first page he says his mechanic found dirt - right there is the start of the problem. Take any newer 2 stroke (or 4 stroke if your really brave) and throw some dirt down the intake and see how it works out for you!! You can say he needs to run X brand of oil or Y jetting with Z fuel , add some dirt and nothing matters LOL.....
2nd if your bike is trying to sieze, bog, and sounding wierd - quit riding it until you can properly investigate the problem

after 3 KTM's for me and one for my son , in my opinion the GasGas is the better bike. mine comes with the dual ign switch on the handlebar allready by the way - and you can actually tell when you switch it, very very little difference on the KTM for some reason.

he claimed to like the gasgas BUT he rides 125s and has no other real 250 experience to compare to (other than 250f last year) , i myself wouldnt worry a bit about him running a gasgas 250 all season with a few suspension mods, what it lacks n outright HP it more than makes up for with traction and ridability.
see if this link works, thats a black gasgas with a holeshot in 250B:

Im sure the GasGas and KTM can be made ALOT faster , i know i can an MX flywheel,Ignition, and easily change my compression to improve HP BUT then you start losing what these bikes are really good at - they are 2 strokes that hook up and dont wear you out as much as the MX versions....

Harley,
non of the GasGas EC's are street legal, just some states are really easy to get plates for and you can sneak some dirtbikes through. in USA trim you dont get the turn signals and other stuff that is shown in the picture in an earlier post. i have a 2010 GasGas EC250 and i can tell you it is every bit if not better than the KTM offroad models, ive had 3 ktms in the last few years myself.
