Title: Best 500GP rider of all time
Post by: TMKIWI on July 25, 2010, 09:54:51 PM
Who is your favorite 500GP road rider of all time ?
Mine would have to be:
1) Mick Doohan . Legend
2) Valentino Rossi. I know but most of his titles have been on a 4 stroke.Would be 1'st if it was still 500's
3) Kevin Schwantz. One of the few guy's that raced with the attitude that 2nd was the first loser. :D
He never had the best bike but could make his bike do things that would seem impossible. Was my favorite rider to watch in the early 90's.

Honorable mentions: Giacomo Agostini,Barry Sheene

I don't follow GP, but Yamaha was putting out some comic clips with the GP riders like the one above and some interviews like this one.

One on One - Eddie Lawson & Ben Spies - Part One (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGmECSnFDkk#ws)

Wayne Rainey was one of the best, too bad his career was cut short. Doohan would of never had as many championships as he did have, and Kevin would of never won his only in 93. Another would be Eddie Lawson he won 3 times with Yamaha and his final one in 1989 on that evil NSR500, needless to say he ran away from Honda the next year. I wonder why? lol

Then before these guys (and before I was born) there was Kenny Roberts Sr. And as TMKIWI said Agostini and Sheene are other names I can't forget either.

As for Rossi he's a legend in MotoGP. He won the 500GP championship in his second year. It also was the final year for the 500s.  :'(  But Rossi has said multiple times he'd rather race the 500 2 stroke.

Hands down Barry Sheene.Second to Schwantz.Third to Mamola. Not the very best maybe but my favorites.Something about the attitude.Especially Sheene.Schwantz because he wrang the guts out of everything and Mamola because he was twisted 8)

How about favorite battles?I'd take Rainey and Schwantz-for as long as Schwantz kept it on two wheels anyway.

Schwantz v Rainey Hochenheim 91.  :D
There was another race that year when the battle was Rainey,Schwantz and Doohan. Amazing

Mine would have to be

1) Kenny Roberts
2) Wayne Gardner
3) Mick Doohan

Loved those 500 cc two strokes. If my memory serves me right Kenny Roberts also raced 750 cc two strokes in formula 1

Some awesome talent in 500's, some of the riders on non factory machines were very bit as good as the well paid factory blokes.

Jarno Saarinen
Virgino Ferrari
Jurgen van der Goorburg
Jack Middleburg
Will Hartog
Graeme Crosby
Garry McCoy
Jeramy McWilliams
Alberto Puig(before the big accident)
Late Noriuki Abe
Taddy Okada
Luca Cadalora
Jean Michel Bayle

NORICK'S FIRST 500cc GP (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXMLe8k90nA#)

One rider I abhore is Mamola he accepted a works Cagiva ride just for the money and rode round doing wheelies, his nadir was flipping the bike on the warm up lap at the Assen TT. He recently did a stoppie on the main straight at a litre bike launch, 2 riders almost 'Liberace'd' him at speed.

I used to enjoy road racing a lot more when the 500 two strokes were racing.

Some YZR500 pipes(lowers) a friend in NZ was asked to copy. Titainium is very difficult to press into shape would have had to been formed at 600 deg C

I was lucky enough to meet Graeme Crosby in the late 80's.
He was a real character and bloody good on a bike.

Interesting.I've never heard tell of a rider doing that before-shame on him. Most base their choice of rides on what's best for the sport or their love of the factory-not what benefits their career or bank account. :o

Sweet vid.G.D. I miss that.Way back when, 3hrs on Sun morning was "leave me the hell alone time"They used to televise the 125,250,500 races back to back. 8)

We still get all the races live. :)
I always liked the 125's & 250's but they have taken away the 250's now >:(
Look at vid's on the 500's from late 90's and you see 30 odd bikes lined up. :)
Now they are lucky to get 16. :(
At least with full grid's you had lots of small battles from the front down to 25th place.
The guys racing for 20th were just as determined to beat the guy in front of him as the guy who was racing for first.
The factories should be made to supply customer bikes for a reasonable price to other teams.

Might as well throw my hat into the video ring with the Kenny Roberts section as featured in On Any Sunday II.  If I was going to have sport bike, I'd want it to be painted like Roberts'.

speaking of kenny, I was lucky enough to be at indy last year to see him run the tz750. that was an awesome moment.

Kenny Roberts and the Indy Mile (2009) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8k8hJWKIVNs#ws) the video sounds great but it does not do that sound justice. Not at all. I was speechless. And king kenny had no shame at all in backing that bad boy in.

the following day at the indy GP, schwantz cut 4 laps or so on the RGV 500. that was great. A hell of a lot quieter than the TZ!

Yeah I know I am real lucky to see that, was one of those things I will truly cherish - since I've been here I've seen that, met mert lawwill a few weeks back at a historic flat track race,  and bobby rahal and vic elford at watkins glen, (standing in the paddock and watching the canadian F1 qualifying on a tv that folded out the side of Bob Leitzinger's transporter standing next to rahal with his kid in a stroller was pretty damn cool!) and ryan briscoe last year at the glen indy race. Then there was meeting decoster, tony D, laporte and o'mara and the whole crowd of ex champions at unadilla, and there was ken block and dave mirra at the susquehannock trail rally.  Some awesome memories to return to australia with, and I really appreciate those things, and know how fortunate I am to be able to do this stuff :)

Trust me, if you can do an accurate impression of that announcer in a country where that kind of accent is a rarity, you can get a lot of laughs.

Can any one tell me what a "grass farmer" does ? ::)

Harvests grass seed, I suppose.  I'm sure the world goes through a lot of the stuff as people need to re-seed their lawns so they look nice and perfect.  Word on da street is that the Willamette Valley (which is where 95% of the people in Oregon live) is the grass-seed capital of world.  Which, by the way, is very inconvenient if you happen to be allergic to that kind of thing!  It is noticeably easier to breathe on the Eastern side of the Cascades than it is in the valley, just because there's so many allergens floating about.

From wiki: "The major agricultural products of the valley include many varieties of berries and vegetables. The valley also produces most of the grass seed, Christmas trees, and hazelnuts sold in North America."[/digression]

Besides Coffee, Flowers are one of the largest exports of Colombia and I think as many as 80% of the Roses you buy in the US are from there.  You can buy a dozen roses for like $5 in Colombia itself, what's it cost here?  Like $80?

Oh ya, on topic, I think Kenny Rogers used to carry a dozen roses and plant grass seeds while racing the TZ750.

These are basicaly the absolute pinnicle of 2T engine technology, only when you see a RSA cylinder do you realise just how crap your cylinder is in comparision. Turn up to full volumeAPRILIA RSA 250 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rhvN0AUJs8#)

When you say crap, how different would this be against something like a Honda RS125 cylinder? Is it less about the number of ports and more about angles, placements and other sutble differences? If you have any pictures or can explain would love to hear!  ;D

A NF4 or NX4? They are totaly different, closest is a Pavesi ICC shifter kart cylinder. Some talk and pics HERE (http://motomatters.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=936)I removed a pic  but it was a top secret spy pic(my mate gets them from the foundry).
Yes it is about the number of ports(triple exhaust) and Aprilia's duct geometry in particular, there a lots of aspects to that cylinder that to the naked eye 'won't work'. I have no doubt 'old school' porting heros can reduce the output of that cylinder very quickly.Other aspects of the engine like the 115mm rods etc etc Then there is the pipes they run, like the cylinders developed to the enth degree.  One thing I can say is when looking at the base of the cylinder it has large radius on the duct enrty and is quite small the transfer divider tapers from 20mm down to 5mm and is almost square edged. No fricken knife edges >:(

Ha ha yeah I saw that post previous hence my curiosity!  ;D

Not sure which cylinder my RS used to have it was a 96 if that helps. I'll have to ask a friend who races karts if he's seen the Pavesi type. Sounds like cool stuff!!

I have to add to this topic. Two amazing Aussies, and one adopted one are my favourite of all time GP racers. Barry Sheene at number one. Had tears in my eyes the day that he died.  Mick Doohan at number two, who is just a genuine champion of the sport, and Gary McCoy number 3. Garry used to slide that 500 around like crazy and was amazing to watch. Could go blisteringly fast, then would struggle or crash the next week. But sensational to watch.

That racing certainly is not the same now that they are not racing two strokes, and it is only getting worse, with the loss of the 250 cc two stroke class, and the 125's on death row. I know that several team owners/bosses that are not happy with the situation, and they dont like the four stroke format, but there is nothing they can do about it.  At least we still have the option to ride and race two strokes, these guys are pure and simply not allowed. Now that would be a very bitter pill to swallow !!!!

for me i have had the good fortune to see some awesom riders, some great riders and a couple i would put in the legend class.
Rainey and Doohan both legends
Ago and Sheene also legends
Rossi also legend
Schwantz and Cadalora and geoff Duke was where what i would call great riders
Lawson also a great rider

Here's a race from one of my dvd's, had to get it ordered from America because Duke didn't have it released here, until now. Here in the UK duke video now have all the 90's seasons released this year, finally!

I think Alex Barros is another racer worth mentioning, however, I feel that everyone was more in with a chance with the 500's, there was an energy and desire to actually race hard that should be a part of racing anyway.
