my '97 got 21 mpg (but had a 3.55 rear end). Rated at 235 HP (and a monster number for torque that I can't remember).
my '01 that I use now gets like 16 on a good day. Same 7.3 engine but Ford tuned it up to 265 HP. It has a 3.73 rear end.
I liked the older engine better. Enough power and MUCH easier on the fuel.
I just picked up a 7.3 Powerstroke with a few mods (chip, exhaust and intake). Tons of power and still better fuel economy than my F150 4.6 gas!

I've had a 2006, 2009 and now a 2013 F250 with diesel. No issues with any of them.
Great! iMHO any of the big three diesel pickups are very strong tools.
Did you chip any of your fords?

Seriously, I had a Ford 6.0 let go and it wasn't cheap to fix. The new 6.7 was engineered by an Austrian design firm and I wonder how they are standing up?

Actually has cams and valves (only exhaust).
Has a supercharger.
Has a Turbo charger.
They do make a very unique sound!

I let them go around 200k. Vehicles are a bad investment at the best of times. I don't like to go too far past the warranty no matter what I'm driving. Same rationale is used for fleets. We run plenty of diesels in our fleets and I wouldn't say Ford, Chevy or Dodge stands out from a dependability perspective. Beat them up on gravel and dirt and they need to be fixed.
