After making the switch from enduro to motocross just a couple months ago I have been thinking of selling the 200 and getting a motocross bike again. So at the weekend while out practicing with friends when the gear lever on my bike broke I managed to try a 2001 KX 250, 2002 SX 125 and a 2011 RMZ 250 and after seeing how slow I was on the 250 KX I decided it had to be a 125 (my budget would defintely not cover a 250f blowin up).
So with a budget of around £2-2500 what's the best 125 to go for? By the way the age of the bike or the look of the bike doesn't bother me aslong as the bike has lots of topend power.
-
That is a good budget... TM, RM or KTM
-
Iv already had an rm and there aren't any tm dealers locally however KTM could be good as my local dealer sells them and has plenty of spares in stock but how is the reliability on them, my old 03 sx 125 broke the ENTIRE gearbox just after I got it and I was quoted more than double the value of the bike to fix it.
-
I would have to say go for a KTM
-
Well- you should just get the old standard YZ then...
-
I second the YZ. I also like the handling of the newer KTM's but nothing older than the '07 model.
-
How are the YZ`s Iv only ever rode a heavily modified YZ which nothing but bottom end and I hated it for it.
-
Bottom end and 125's should never be together IMO... Lots of YZ info out there and almost always good. Fantastic bikes and tons of knowledge/parts. Lots of them around too.. A great engine and chassis... If I did not despise the ancient body work, I would have bought one instead of my KTM.
-
This
is what i remember form riding tm ktm husky yz
YZ had good middle and top, suspension was very good..
-------------------------
Husky had sharper turning than the yz . Suspension was a bit stiffer. but power was close middle but had a stronger top
---------------------------
KTM this is a little mix since I only ridden 2011 250 and 125 03+..
But the power on the 125 motor was stronger in low end power compare to the yz
now for the 250 since its the one whit newer chassis... Is very stable and track ruts very well, But may need the front forks tune
----------------
Tm
not yet ridden whit alu frame but.. the motor is strong in the middle and got a good pull in the top.
suspension depend on what you get... marzzochi is stiffer in my opininon than the ohlins
It does turns very stable. but in slow turns it still carves..
As said this is what i remember.

I have an 04 RM 125 and I love it. I like the power, the hit, and the handling is superb. I have ridden my buddies 06 YZ 125 a bunch of times and didn't like it. The power was too concentrated on the low to mid, and even though he was a little lighter then me, and had big money in it, I wasn't crazy about the suspension. It's a great bike, and If I owned one I would probably would easily be able to tweak it the way I like it, but I'm very happy with my RM. The 04+ are the better ones.
The YZ would probably be very good in the woods.
I hear nothing but good things about the Husky 125's, and here they're cheap.

Might get this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180939127885
Looks okay.
-
Thats right gpnewhouse7 get the right tool for the job and leave those magic motors for the trails. HA! just remember turn it till it stops and clutch to slow down.
-
Well- you should just get the old standard YZ then...
X2
The stock SSS suspension makes my RM's tricked out Showas feel like pogo sticks.

Have a read of this
http://www.dirtrider.com/tests/boosting-a-husky-cr125-to-new-levels/
They did a shootout in July but I can't find it online. I think it may be on here somewhere.
But any way you can't go wrong with any of them.
My picks would be Husky and RM.

Me too. The RMs are legendary 125s without a doubt. I would also looked for something 04 onwards those were and are the best. I wish I could get one thats for sure.
Looking forward to seeing your new girlfriend

If you installed 115mm rod plus a 125 GP piston they should be the best 125 ever built. Cylinder needs no work and the PV is Suzuki's best.
-
I'm going to go and view the rm I posted a link to earlier sometime within the next couple of weeks once iv got a car sorted
Looking forward to seeing your new girlfriend
Haha same here, my last actial girlfriend broke up with me because she thought racing was too dangerous an wanted me to quit so she said it was her or motocross. And seen as I'm now single an still racing you can see where my loyalties lie haha

A very good friend of mine's wife raced offroad for years all over North America (Kawasaki). It was kind of funny because I think she was more hard core then my friend and he raced pro motocross,Six Days and even Baja!

05+ rm 125
-
The RM you posted the add for looks good.
Not sure on UK prices if that is a good price or not.
P.S It must be fast if it has Rockstar graphics.
If you get it, ditch the graphics and do something original.

x2. Especially on the Rockstar graphics too, that stuff is so bad for you even advertising it on your bike is damaging your liver
