Imagine eating a massive... juicy succulent top notch steak and not being able to taste anything.

Thats what riding a four stroke motocross bike is for me

I currently own a 2001 YZ250

Ye for a two stroke only website we seem to support the antichrist, why don't we ride KTM's and TM`s and Yamaha`s etc? If those hondas aren't Service Honda's then we seem to be supporting the wrong people and don't think used bikes don't make any difference I bet the majority of the profit from each bike comes from the parts sales and not from the sale of the actual bike.

Come on guys support the people who support our sport. Not the ones who are trying to kill it.

I might have to ban myself for posting this, but the only bike I have right now is a 2008 Yamaha WR250R dualsport, it's my work commuter. I had to sell my KDX last fall due to financial reasons.

Next spring I plan to pick up a newer KTM 200-300 EXC because I think I am going to get back into hare scrambles. I finally graduate in May 2013, so it seems like a two stroke will make a nice graduation present to myself after 4 years of dealing with kids half my age in an academic setting  ;D .

Yeah Newhouse 7, there,s a huge markup on parts. If you ride alot, you buy alot of parts. The manufacters make money off of you until you stop riding. Honda tracks there parts sales better than anyone, to keep there customers happy and to  track what people are buying. If they sell 400,000.00 in 2-st parts and 120k in 4-st parts, that tells them what,s going on. Just because Honda said there a 4-st co. now, that just means there the only honest co. out there, because there all 4-st co.s  If ya own a cr, it,s prob the most pro 2-st thing that you can do. It has to piss them off, that there 2-st parts sales are great. I owned 13 2-st, nothing handles like a honda or is built like one. Think about the 02 cr250,s with 500 engines, how many RM, SX OR KX,s 02,s with 500 engines do ya see. The 02 and up cr chassis, can handle the 500,s power, you can,t say that about the other makes.

There is no debating Honda quality... But, I think the most pro 2t thing you can do is buy new 2t's from the brands that make still make them.

If  your willing to buy me a new TM 300 mx i'll gladly sell my CR til then i'll ride what i got!!
I dont buy Genuine parts either so i'm not supporting Honda with my dollars, I have supported FMF, Wiseco and Michelin so far. nom de guerre is right too about Honda quality.
If any of those Hondas were of the 4 stroke variety then you could say somethin but i doubt any are..

For someone who rides a two stroke you don't think about things very hard.
Unless Honda makes a profit on used bike sales then people who own Honda two strokes are no more supporting Honda themselves as they are Al Qeada. Unless ofcourse they're buying genuine parts which I've never heard of anyone doing.
But hey, if you're willing to buy me a brand new KTM of my choosing i'll happily disown my Yammie.

It was really stupid to say that dude

Don't hesitate. I rode a 2005 CRF250R for about 10 hours before it grenaded, got told 3 grand to fix it. In 3 weeks I swung my leg over my 2001 YZ250 which cost a $1600. Yeah thats right a little over half of what fixing the **** box would've.
best decision of my life mate. The hit of the powerband and being able to BURY the thing into corners had me sold on two strokes for life after I drove out the gate.
You will NOT regret switching to the smokers that I promise. Do it

Somehow we should open up the poll to allow multiple bikes. I see in everyones signature different bikes and brands. The poll is not accurate if we are restricted to a single bike. I posted Husqvarna because I have 6 of them, but I spend a lot of time on the Beta and Can-Am. In 2 weeks, I'll be racing the Penton and in July and August I'll be on the KTM.

And I think the point of gpnewhouse7 was that we should be BUYING new bikes and not riding old ones just to be on a 4-stroke. And he has a point. This isn't a vintage MX site, it is a site for promoting 2 strokes (and bashing 4$trokes  :P ) and the best way to get your point across is to let the manufacturers know that 1) yes you have money to spend and 2) you won't buy a 4$. Even if you bought a 2012 RM 250 (basically an '07), you are telling Suzuki loud and clear what the market wants. Not buying a new bike, and getting a used '07 just tells Suzuki you have no money.

Note: I just used Suzuki as an example. No need to go into it.

YES, there is no point in sending honda and the AMA emails and posting on their favebook walls but they aren't going to be botherd. Suzuki being out sold by KTM`s two stroke division IS an eye opener, let's face it the manufacturers build what sell and the AMA/FIM find a class for that bike to race in.

I have yet to be turned away at a race in any country I've raced in. Most organizations will bend the rules for you if necessary, just to get you to participate. For instance, I ride vintage open class bikes in MX1 (we don't have an MX3 class in Portugal). If I was dominating, they might say something but since I am mid pack and back, I'm not taking trophies away from anyone, so no one protests.

Truth is, they are more concerned with the color of my numbers than the bike I ride. I was DQ'd at the last race because I used a black background with yellow numbers (last minute bike change - approved by the organization). It was fair and within the rules. I hold no ill will and I thank them for letting me race at all (and not ruining and wasting a long distance trip to the event!) because participating it the whole point! Sure, some folks make a living at it, but I'm not one of them. I'm just there to have fun.

That said, in the US and some other places, as an amateur, you have fair rules "in the AMA". You just have to coax your track to use them. What we are asking for it for the same rules to be used by the PROS.

I agree. I've seen a guy be allowed to race a bored out YZ490 in the MX 2 class. He made it clear he was just a beginner and needed a cheap entry into the sport. That there was no way in hell he was going to be using all the power and would ride slowly to ajust to the racetrack. Why was he allowed to race? A.) He didn't bring that many pairs of undies so he probably wouldn't use full power. Or even half... B.) This isn't even an affiliated track, its a bunch of weekend warriors that, while they like to think they're hot **** and ride like Barcia, they arent. and  C.) The guy that owns that track is actually an all time 2 smoker and wanted them to participate. Hell he probably would've let a maico 700 enter.

Fact of the matter is, most of them are out there to have fun, not win big money (although they need it for the bikes). The guy that owns the track is a legend, he hasn't changed the track at all since the rise of the fag machine. So yeah, on a track thats built for WOT the 250s are often at the head of the pack when they participate. IF the rider is good

I'm using a 2000 EC200, and RM250 for woods riding duties, and will soon have a 99 EC300 on the track. Still trying to find the time for the 82 Maico 490...I replaced the rear shock with an Ohlins, and just need to finish up some details. 77 YZ250, and 79 YZ125 also need time and attention. I also have a street RZ350, and one for the track. I'm thinking I can say I'm a "2 stroke enthusiast" ... just don't tell anyone about my Cannondale/ATK addiction... :o

Do you keep your bikes in a garage or a warehouse? You seem to have a fair old selection.

Can't blame you though I'd happily do the same if I had the money.

They are fun, and in the right hands and on the right track, they can win but "four stroke eater" they are not. You are still giving up a lot to gain that "ear to ear" grin. If you just want to be different, buy a Husky, Beta, or Gas-Gas 250F, but if you want real fun, then by all means, you will not find a more fun motorcycle!

This weekend, I was out with one of the local hot shoes (he's a 4$ guy) and my buddy with a CR250. The 4$ guy first rode the CR. Came in with a glowing smile you could plainly see in his helmet all the way down the start straight! Now, this CR is peeerrrrrfffect. I challenge anyone to find a better example of the breed. Anyway, we rode some more and then I turned him loose on my KTM 144. He came back just giddy! He was shaking in his enjoyment. Did we convert him? Doubt it. he'll need the 250F to be competitive in the class. But does he know why we ride and swear by 2T's? OH, HELL YEAH!

I think one of the biggest things that divides the four jokes from the smokers is the riding style they require. As we all know railing the outside line is often the best way to go for a smoker. Not always but often. The smokers corner like a dream. 250Fs are alot more labored through the corners. Yamaha's 250F description says something along the lines of: "Ask any motocross rider where races are won and lost and odds on he'll tell you its all in the corners". This is very true. If you take a 150 SX, mod it out a little, squeeze a few more ponies out of it then DEPENDING ON THE TRACK it can be VERY competitive in the right hands. Now I'm not a racer, I'm the first to admit that. Speaking for my local track ONLY the smokers REMAIN competitive. I saw just last year a 250SX mash the four jokes something serious. The track hasn't changed since the rise of the four strokes in any major way so that was a big advantage.

What I meant by four stroke eater was more at a very basic and do-it-for-fun level of mx. Sorry for the poor wording

The problem between a modded 125 (139, 144, 175) is that although they make more peak hp than a 250F, they do it only in one spot. Using the graph in MxA as an example (and this is from memory so don't expect the numbers to be exact...), at 7000, a 250F is like 30 hp, while the 144 is at 17 hp (about the peak of an early '70's 175). The 250F numbers climb very slowly from there to 14000 rpm and peak at 35 hp but all that way they are +30 hp. The 144 slowly climbs until about 10000 when BAM! 38hp! to 11000 and sayonara.

To me, all that is very over simplified but Jeremy McGrath or Ricky Carmichael couldn't keep that 144 in such a narrow power band forever. I would gladly give up the 3 hp to have that power in a wider range (in an equal machine). It would allow a lesser rider to compete just that much more evenly, and in the hands of the really fast...makes it no contest. Of course, between the 2 and 4 strokes, there are other differences that all favor the 2 stroke, thus narrowing the gap further; weight, turning ability, braking, "snap", all are important parts to the equation.

So, what am I saying here? I know it sounds like I am making a case for the 4$ but I am not. I am just laying out the facts while not fanning the flames and name calling. The modern 4$ is a technical marvel. In no other sport can you buy the equivalent of an F1 car (back of the grid of course!) off the show room floor. But with that comes a price and that price is more parts to wear out, a much narrower tolerance for failure, and a much higher price tag. We all know that cc for cc, the 2T is a better deal, but under current AMA or FIM Pro rules (you can run the 144 in the FIM 250F class - there is no difference between pro and amateur), you can't beat the 250F.

It,s 167 not a 175, I don,t want a 2-st rider calling a shop saying I saw it on the internet so make me a 175.haha  It,s all rider  the slower classes like 250 c  you can win on a stock 125 with a pipe, that,s 8 years old. You can,t run a 144 in the 250 class at the nationals or supercross in America. I was at alot of nationals when they where on 125,s, saw MC on a 125 and RC in 97 his KX was one of the most peaky 125,s ever. Start to finish RC was riding like he wanted to kill the world. ;D  I rode the KTM 144 and 150, didn,t think it was hard to ride at all. My 04 cr125 with a stroker crank and 2mm ovr borre- didn,t  want the 2mm ovr borre for many reasons, but it,s done. When the 04 hits and starts pulling, over 20 ft lbs of torque is on the massive hit then builds to around 22-23 ft lbs of torque. A 125 with porting is faster thew the corners tho, because the crank and much heavy piston, you loose the quickness of a modded 125.

I agree there. The easy (and gay) powerband allows the 250F to rocket ahead simply because it produces decent power over a wide range. As opposed to the 125 (or 144 whatever) That produces beastly power in what is sometimes a 2 grand range. Its not easy to keep it there, infact on some tracks its down right impossible. Before 250Fs came to town and before I go onto say this I'll point out that I'm just speculating. Anyway before 250Fs came to town a 125 was more of a scream it out. No bottom and no mid (although perhaps some models made advancements in those areas). But when the 250Fs started rolling in with their ability to pull far far ahead in the lower ranges, the 125 mxer needed to change to pull rider and machine much harder through these areas. I'll say again: I'm SPECULATING based on the 125 shootouts that I've read. But lets face it when it comes to the crunch, fun is fun  :P

I believe if you put a KTM 200 cylinder on a KTM 150 (144-same thing, different name), you get a 174 point something. And I am not saying that the 144 is hard to ride. It is actually the MOST fun (although my '98 Yamaha with the 139 kit was probably even better). In most amateur classes, it would be competitive against 250F's and on a tight track, 250 2T's.

We run MX1 and MX2 together here. Currently in the regional championships, 3rd overall is a kid on a 144. Second is a past MX and National Enduro Champion on a 250F and 1st Overall is something like a 13 time Champion and a past National MX Champion on a 450F. He's currently 9th in the national championship. Kind of a nice podium mix.

2-strokes in the nationals? So far this season, only 1 has appeared in 3 rounds. A KTM 125 is currently 13th after 3 rounds (but he didn't appear in the last event).

I just read on another site that akid of only 16, in his first senior event at the South Australian MX titles, won the Pro lite class on a 150! They said he was the only one against a gate full of 250f's and 250 smokers, Maybe a future Champ here?? ;) ;)

This is how she sits currently:

Thinking of going back to a more OEM or early Team Honda type look.  Simple type graphics/decals.  But, I am not in any hurry, none of that will make me any faster!   ;D
Sweet bike mate, welcome aboard, great year, great brand :D :D ;)

Sweet Eric. I'll be taking a look at an 01 CR125 (honda) on the weekend. A guy is interested in swapping it for my pile o junk that was once a fooper. I think I might get the valves and camchain framed with the price underneath in big gold letters underneath. Followed by: I heart two strokes. With two expansion chambers for the heart.

just got back on a 2 stroke after 6 years on 4 strokes,  new ride tm300 and lovin it .  :D

Welcome to the forum Steeve. May I ask, what made you comeback to the smokers?

theres a couple of reasons , first of the cost of maintaining the 4$ was getting to me as i was changing oil all the time doing air filters every ride and always had at least 3 spare filters ready to go into it as they seem to get dirty twice as quik as 2 strokes .
2nd working on them is a P.I.T.A every thing is cramed into them so tight , swearing usually started about 5min into the job
3rd parts seemed to cost more for the equivalent parts on 2 strokes
4th weight ! i started on a crf450x and it was way to heavy for where i ride, ended up taking the mrs 250x and sold the 450r i got after selling the 450x
5th there are no 4$  that have all the things i wanted and the tm was perfect for me as soon as i rode 1 i was hooked , what i was after was a bike that was light and flickable in the tight stuff but would run with the big bikes when the trail opened up, is capable of hauling me around the mx track and it had to be registerable , basicly the tm is a perfect all rounder

Damn straight. No matter how light they make the bodywork of a four stroke, it will never be as light and flickable as a two stroke bike.

Imagine eating a massive... juicy succulent top notch steak and not being able to taste anything.

Thats what riding a four stroke motocross bike is for me

Well put! I love Suzuki at heart, but have a few bikes in various stages right now...
I call them "modern classics"

1979 RM125
1997 CR125
1998 KX500
1999 CR250
2001 RM125
2008 YZ250

...except for the RM's, the bikes are in pieces.

My KTM380 will even let me plonk around with my daughter on her yamaha 100 (two stroke of course) now that the jetting issues are put to bed. Bike does everything -- except go on the road without undue "official" attention. Still loving it.

My second, longest owned bike is a Honda XR250R street legal
I also have a KTm 380EXC for sale and my dad rides a Honda XR400R street legal

Dream bike? It would have to be custom:
KTM 380SX motor
6-speed wide ratio transmission
2008-2013 KTM PDS frame
Ohlins TTX suspension front & rear

Damn Honda's  >:-D haha nah I like honda products (I use a Honda lawn mower at work which is pure awesome it can cut grass in ANY weather an picks it up like its dry) but I just don't like their ethics. They HAD fuel injected two strokes in the 90s but rather than bringing it to production they parked that idea up an stopped making two strokes all together so that they could be all fourstroke again as mr Sochiro Honda had always wanted. Its just ridiculous.

I have an '01 KX250, it's torn apart in my garage right now due to blown crank bearings! The motor was very strong and hit pretty hard too, but it blew up on me after 38.1 hours on a complete engine rebuild!!!! The KX line around the 99-02 era were notorious for "falling apart", reliability was dodgy at best! It was a fun bike to ride, but I spent way too much money fixing things on it that should last for a very long time!
I now have an 02 CR250 that runs awesome with the new Keihin PWK carb! It handles a lot better than the KX too.

SXs.... I went and had a squiz at the most rooted 1998 125 SX you have ever seen in your life and I'm pretty sure it was actually a 250 anyway. Rusted subframe, hole in the airbox, trimmed front and rear fenders, cracks in both rims, spokes missing, one cylinder head nut missing, no gasket on the base (either that or it was an insanely thin one), rusted exhaust, caved in pipe and the list goes on. In conclusion the most BFed bike I've seen in person for a while. The guy wanted 1200 for it. When I asked about its last top and bottom end job he said he couldn't remember. Oh and he was high as S*** when I rang him up about it.

And that, was the worst sale I have ever followed up.

You know what I'd love to have? A 200 exc. Then do a conversion to mx. I reckon that would be the ducks nuts. Not quite the brutal power of a 250, and faster than a 125. Its been done with KDXs but I'd like to see if with a katoom. If I had the money I'd do it.

Just fuel injection? I would rather see a completely reworked YZ.

Maybe eric gore or LA. sleeve could make one. I'd say it would have to be custom made and it would be... less than cheap.

Didnt honda kind of kill 2 strokes? why do a majority of people here ride them and support the brand?

Because not everyone is smart enough to buy a KTM.

Well people are entitled to their own option in bikes, but I mean I see where you're coming from. As far as everyone riding a KTM though, how about the other brands still making/supporting two strokes? Like Yamaha, Husky, ect...

I don't get that either. Aside from the 4 stroke agenda, although they've built some good bikes, they've built their fair share of turkeys over the years.

if i remember right kawasaki was the first to drop a two stroke from their line up. and my hondas seem to last fovever.

Post by: cnrcpla on January 07, 2013, 10:13:39 PM
Yeah but Kawasaki still makes the 85's and 65's and aren't pushing the 150fs. It seems as though honda is the advocate for anti-two stroke. Whether or not that's true, its just how it SEEMS.

Be that as it may, I'm not trying to start an argument. Honda has made some great bikes, I'm just saying at least Kawasaki still makes 2t's.

Honda can't even get their four strokes right. Despite being "an expert in four stroke engines" they still suck for a race bike when compared to Suzuki, Kawasaki or KTM. Their two stroke line up had better results. Although I won't buy another Japanese motorcycle for as long as I live unless they SERIOUSLY step up their game.

Okay then people should buy the Husqvarna`s, TM`s, KTM`s, Maico`s and any other brand that makes and supports their two strokes (Yamaha are excluded due to the fact that they were the ones who bullshitted their way into getting the huge fourstroke displacement advantage for racing).

Honda make good lawnmowers and I suppose I wouldn't mind an 02ish Civic Type R but as far as their bikes go I personnally think that there are much better bikes available.

I reckon 250s are the way to go actually, depending on your priorities. I'd go a 250, cos I could race MX1 and 2. Here in Aus anyway.
Title: who rides what?

yeah love the 250 but now im a bit older now so im not hemmed in by capacity rules ,the vets class ive found has sometimes been more competitive than the other grades but the 300s seem to be the most versitile for xc/mx/enduro or playing about all good though

I might need one of them then in another few years seen as I'm 17 and my knees are already going knackered (too many bikes with busted or just to soft suspension and an attitude of that can just stand up for suspension) altough did buy some knee braces a year or two since so I should hopefully be okay yet for a little while longer.

Nice bike aswell by the way, wish I could afford one.

I just bought it for $4200 and then sold my beat '07 SX250 for $3000. It came with extra pipe, silencer, air box, bars, oil, sprocket. I couldn't afford not to buy it. I tried to buy a new one in 2011 but there was not a dealer in America that had one.
