Title: Rode an 80hp CR500 today.
Post by: Recovered on May 12, 2012, 02:30:16 AM
At Budds Creek.  Haven't ridden on a track in 4 years.  So, I sure know how to pick the perfect bike to "ease" into it on.

Quarter throttle, leaps so far out ahead of a 2012 KX450F its not even funny, uphill.

Can't keep yourself far enough forward on the bike.  Can't pull yourself forward with the bars because it'll just flip over backwards.  So you have to pull yourself forward with your thighs.  It's a weird motion. But if you ride the bike with your ass on the gas cap, and make sure you are pointed in the right direction before you hammer it, it is do-able.  if you are slightly off axis, slightly crossrutted, and grab a handful,  hope you brought a spare change of underoos.

I laughed the whole way around the track, in sheer terror and utter disbelief of what an 80hp motocross bike feels like.  Makes a 250 feel like a spirited bicycle.

The best part, GOPro chase cam footage exists, and apparently, I about knocked the gopro off the top of the guys head with roost from 40 feet back coming out of a corner.

I'm still shaking.  Nightmares.  Cold sweats.  Post traumatic stress disorder.  That idling.  pop pop pop pop pop pop.  Twist right wrist, dislocate left shoulder.

Honda or Kawasaki? Old RM? Maybe one of the 2012 Cr or Kx 500AF's? What were you riding?

Guys, who the hell cares what the real HP number is. If it feels like 80 HP, well, that's fine by me. I love the ride description. Premixed -- is this your bike? We will continue to get monster crash, er,.... ride reports? I hope so! Have fun with that thing. Open 2 strokes forever! Weeeeeeeee!

I dont doubt it was fun to ride ;)

even with 60rwhp it would have gone exactly as fast as he said it did.

C'mon guys he could of been running nitrous shot :P

80hp can happen but its going to need a custom pipe to match its extremely peaking porting profile, among other mods

90hp for a cr500 is not unheard of. That EFI cr500 that was posted here pulled 67hp on stock porting and mild tune.

90hp dream on. To get to approach 80hp you need to be on methanol with 44mm carburetor, then the bike is not 'fast' at all they only go well on dirt track/sand/road racing with certifiable nutcases riding.
HRC riders were de-tuning the 500 to make them ridable back in the mid 90's.

It was a 95 CR.  It was 1.25 over, ported to hell, among other things, and dyno'd at the wheel at just under 80.

You can sit o the internet and argue about it until your ****ing balls fall off though, dudes.  I don't care.  I rode it, and I can tell you it was more than 65hp, and virtually unridable. That is why I ased the owner, to which I got the response "It dyno'd close to 80."  So, If you REALLY want to get out the calculator and figure out crank hp, that number would be over 80.  I burned both my boots on both side of the pipe and bruised both my inner thighs from squeezing the tank so hard to keep from flying off the back of the bike in 3rd gear.  My eyes hurt when I got done, and I realized it was from not blinking.

i cant imagine that lol
i would be very surprised if a 500 4 stroke could get 80 horsepower, and that 500 2 stroke would last 10X as long i would bet

You mad bro?

All kidding aside, I wasted a small chunk of my teenager years on trike/quad forums where drag racing is being done. Ever heard of a Puma motor? its a 400cc cylinder mated to a atc/trx250r cases. Here is a dyno sheet of one running on Methanol..With the counter balancer..

Tell me again that cr500's can't pull off 90hp..

Why is it so hard to believe a 500 pulled off just under 80HP? I don't see why not  ??? I mean that would be a bit of a handful on the track and almost impossible to ride in tight woods, but I guess it is nice to say you "tamed" the beast hahaha  ;D

There is a huge difference between a stock ported cylinder and a big dollar CR500 LIGER cylinder (Not PUMA, the LIGER is the CR cylinder made by CPindustries, who also make the PUMA).
With a 660cc liger cylinder, a completely unusable 100hp is possible on methanol.

But compared to this cylinder which resembles a scaled up 7 port GP125 cylinder, the standard CR cylinder looks primitive in comparison.
No amount of porting on a stock CR500 cylinder will get it anywhere near one of those liger cylinders. Thats why they make the LIGER cylinder from scratch, not a simple core swap port job.

The only CR to get close to 90hp with a stock cylinder (at the crank) was Dr Robert Tullie, he was the head of development at Renault F1 and the creator of the Tul-aris racer.
he build a bike called the Tul-da, a CR500 road racer.

But Ill tell you now this bike is in a whole different league

"Close to 80" as said by some bloke could have meant 75hp, and that 75hp could have been on a 'happy dyno' bringing it down to a more realistic 70hp. Which by all accounts is still a ****ing powerful bike.

I over shot a couple corners and just stayed in the throttle to make it look like I was trying for an "outside" line.  Don;t think I had anyone fooled though.

No matter the actual HP...  (Who really cares)  that is still one fire breathing, underoo changing machine...  My question is how were the vibs of the big bore...  although I bet you were gripping the bars so tight it was hard to notice.   :o  I bet they could hear you laughing (or was that crying in shear terror) as you went around the track.   :D

Vibration is pretty bad, but when it starts to vibrate, is when it starts to move.  Its more like having your cellphone in vibrate.  It's a little annoying but you know something is going on when it shakes.

A CR 500 with a CR500 cylinder and a CR500 pipe won't make 90HP or 80HP. Happy. ;D ;D

I know CPI and know a Puma cylinder is nothing like a TRX cylinder. The graph is set to STD correction factor which would add about 5 HP on that peak figure. Yes methanol and the out of frame Shearer pipes don't forget. :D

Please do because that naughty 'internet' is full of sub 60hp CR500(and a few KX500's) dyno graphs and tired 48hp examples
so to get to 80hp you just need a mere 20HP or 33% more output. Was a de comp fitted?

Just throw on some Depends (adult diapers), and your good to go...  just remember to bring a few extra pairs...   8)  I love it when a stroker rider jumps on my 300...  It scares the crap out of them, I'd probably have the same reaction jumping on a 500...  But I'd be laughing (or screaming in terror) the whole time.

This will throw a monkey wrench into the internet motocross afficanado's theory.  I have ridden a 60hp CR500.  And I have ridden this bike.  Like I said in my first post, I immediately jumped off the bike  and questioned the guy because the power differential between the two was...well....worth questioning, to which I got the response, "it dyno'd at close to 80hp."  followed by the list of mods, in conjunction with the fact that it was jetted to perfection.

I've put in quite a few laps on an Aluminum framed version of the CR500 lately.  It doesn't make 80 hp,
more like 65, but it's a combination hoot and terror to ride :o

The first thing I discovered after a couple of trips over the berm and into the weeds, tires, or whatever
was waiting outside the track was I needed better brakes.  The bike is deceptively fast.  Mine doesn't
vibrate anymore than a 250 and the power is concentrated in the 4000 to 6000 rpm range so there
isn't much aural or visceral input as to your speed except those damn corners keep coming up faster
than you expect :o

I also learned very early on you better be riding the gas cap when you twist the throttle.  The combination
of high horsepower, light weight and short wheelbase makes for a "sporty" ride, in fact, I spend most of
my time trying to keep the front wheel somewhere near the ground :o

If I ever get any GoPro footage, I'll have to turn the sound off because it would spoil the effect if all you
can hear is me screaming like a girl everytime I roll on the power.

I guess the best way to describe riding a stout CR500 engine in a bike that weighs the same as a CRF250;
It's a terrifying blast, and like any adrenaline junkie, I can't wait to do it again  :o

yes, you definitely have to be up on the gas cap 100% of the time.  there is no correcting your riding position once you have twisted the throttle.  but when you get up on the front of the bike, get everything lined up and nail it, it's so frightening how fast you get to the apex of the next turn, and then subsequently blow straight through it.

I want a 500AF badly.  probably my next bike.  i'll find some unfinished basketcase somewhere and make it all nice-like.

By comparison my KTM380 is a piece of cake to ride. Can handle anything and be mild to wild depending on throttle application and RPMS. Seems like a good compromise. A CR500 would be fun I am sure! I only rode a buddies back in the late '80s for a short time and it was pretty killer right off the bottom. My WR500 yamaha had no where near the off idle response (which I think was a good thing).

did the list of mods include a 'port and polish' and a pro circuit pipe?  :P

PS: notice how the last CR you rode was exactly 60hp? and this one is 80hp? and your RGV on the RGV forum was exactly 80hp too?

This will throw a monkey wrench into the internet motocross afficanado's theory.  I have ridden a 60hp CR500.  And I have ridden this bike.  Like I said in my first post, I immediately jumped off the bike  and questioned the guy because the power differential between the two was...well....worth questioning, to which I got the response, "it dyno'd at close to 80hp."  followed by the list of mods, in conjunction with the fact that it was jetted to perfection.

ahh I cant help myself.

what was the list?

did the list of mods include a 'port and polish' and a pro circuit pipe?  :P

PS: notice how the last CR you rode was exactly 60hp? and this one is 80hp? and your RGV on the RGV forum was exactly 80hp too?
what are the chances of all those hp numbers being so nice and rounded............. UP to the nearest 10!

Don't be like that.. -_-

The fact of the matter is, no one can make a thread on this board without Jeram scrutinizing it, and this guy is scrutinizing not only a bike I have ridden but another one of my own bikes on a completely unrelated message board.  The guy is a troll that transcends multiple message boards.  It never fails, that every board has one and in this case, 2 boards have the same one in common.

I have a 94 CR5 in an 03 CR125 chassis.   It is mildly ported, head shaved, air striker carb, Rad Valve, airbox vents added and 2007 CR125 rubber boot between airbox and intake.  I have seen dyno charts of bikes with similar mods at 63hp.  I don't want anymore than that.  If I wasn't riding in sand all the time I would have probably crippled myself by now.

It isnt easy not being a little doubt full when you see hp numbers that high..
and you kind of want something that backs it up.

It`s easy to claim hp thats in my opinion why you get skeptical posts.. (That can be seen as negative)

that's the stock CR5 kicker.  it actually starts pretty easy, more so if I had any ass to kick it with but I'm pretty small and it's on a new bore.    starts 1st or 2nd kick cold with the proper drill and usually 1 kick warm.  the warm drill is to find tdc, push down just past, let it back up and kick thru the stroke, not a jab.

I put it together in dec 08 thru jan 09.  had a guy in cali do the frame fabrication and put the rest together as I wanted it.   no racing, off road only.  I'm 60 in a few months and haven't had the urge to race in years.  used to though.

Im on about 10 forums but choose to only scruitnise in 2, unfortunately some of the content on two of these forums have members who make outrageous claims, conjure up conspiracies about just about anything, and create speculation. In my mind it needs scruitinizing, otherwise any other passers by will think this is a tin foil hat zone.

now, Im actually going now (again haha). so if youve got anything else to say thats what the PM button is for.

I think a post claiming 80hp on a forum that has a number of tuners on it that chase 1 or 2 hp for a living was a little silly and you should've expected a challenge.
I'm not taking sides but premixed you should know not to claim hp figures without being able to back them up.
And i've read couple of jerams posts and he doesn't seem like a troll to me.
Once again i'm not taking anyones side but i think people should be more careful of there claims and not get all hostile when someone calls them on it.
just my 2cents

It's inevitable that I am going to do a 500 motor swap in something.  I may just be "different" and do a 550SX KTM motor in a newer KTM.  Those were supposed to clown on the Japanese 500s.

look at that jug.

The 550 into a 07+ ktm is being done currently. It is not even close to easy swap. The swing arm, frame and intake need considerable fabrication since everything is on the wrong side.

The Honda into a KTM is easy... Easier than the honda into a honda AF swap

Yea, the 550 KTM is supposed to trump the two Japanese bikes in brute power, according to MXA way back when.  I've never ridden KTM though myself.  How about a Maico 700?  100hp.

There is a guy on this website who has one.  Imagine what that feels like in 3rd on the pipe.  Slightly more bottom end than the space shuttle.

unfortunately they are peices of junk, a bloke on supermotoaus bought one new and has converted it to supermoto, he has had nothing but trouble for 2 years. mechanical and electrical issues. the ECU cant even time the spark properly it goes on the fritz.

Its sad that Iv never heard of a happy maico 700 customer, a real shame.
