Title: 2012 250sx sparkly oil
Post by: tweetakt on March 09, 2012, 12:58:41 AM
Seems to be a lot of metal in my oil.  I'm on my 6th oil change and the drain plug is fairly covered with metal contamination.  Plus, the oil looks like fine metal flake paint when it gets near the end....

Seems a little odd.  My 450xcf did the same for a few changes but finally cleaned up.

Should I be worried about now?

And I've had the kick starter gear miss a couple times now.  Awful grinding feel when it doesn't engage properly.
That really sucks.

I don't have any experience with this issue. But I would check the kick starter gear for wear or chips. Also, I would check the clutch basket gear (the big one you first see when you open it up) for chips or wear. If its not those, then maybe you bearings? You can also check the clutch plates for an over heat which may cause them to chip, and worse case check the back of the clutch basket for wear. Hope this helps  :)

The only big issue with the kick gear is that I have to split the case....  I've done it before, I just don't want to have to rebuild a new machine already.  Hopefully I'm not griding the gears and bearings into dust.

Either way, I'm talking to the dealer tomorrow to see if there is a recall or something.

Oh, I'm not very familiar with KTMs, I didn't know you had to split the case. If you looked inside your bottom end, and took all (if any) visible metal debris and then rode it, checked it again, and looked for more metal, then that could answer the "Should I be worried now?" Because if you see new metal, than the answer is yes  :-X

Ride it,my KTM's were always that way and once I stopped worrying about it,I was ok.Some could be from when the kickstarter misses but most is likely clutch and normal wear.Slivers and fine particles aren't much to worry about but bigger chips are.You tend to notice particles more on the KTM's because of the magnetic drain plug.

what you are seeing are particles of aluminum from the clutch plates, switch to steel plates and you won't see them anymore.

Your kickstart pawl assembly and idler gear are accessible by pulling the clutch.Ford is right, you'll always see some debris on a magnetic drain plug with a 2T (On a 4T the oil filter should capture everything - if you're lucky). However, your kickstart pawl should not be slipping this early in the game so this may be a warranty issue.

Good info.. Thanks all.
The oil looked like glitter was in it, very fine.  And the plug was hairy, no big pieces.

I couldn't remember if the gear was in the case halves or not.. good to know it isn't.

I'll be calling the dealer once they open and hopefully they have some good news for me.

Dealer wants $400 to pull apart and look.  Even then they probably won't cover anyting because it still my fault...

So I brought my ride back home and I'll do it myself.  I was told if the parts are tore up that they might be able to help.

Basically this went as I expected.  I need to prove it's them and not me.

More info later

The KTM kickstarter slipping issue rings a bell with me for one of our local riders but my old addled brain can't remember the story.I'd post it on KTM Talk and see what you come up with.

BTW,you likely already do but I've always put pressure on the kickstarter until it engaged then kick.I've seen many jump on them from the top disengaged position to start-that's hard on all of them.

I tried engaging first but that didn't always work.  I tore it down yesterday and ordered all my parts.  Dealer told me to bring damaged parts in and maybe we could work something out.  We will see I guess.

But the gears were certainly torn up.  Chips and cracks, mating surface on one of them looked mashed a little...

The 34tooth is back ordered till next month, but there is a dealer on the east coast that may have it in stock.  I'll have to call them Tuesday when they open.

Seems odd this is back ordered.
Or maybe it isn't  ::)

I did post on KTM Talk.  Respoinse was to get in there and fix.

That would be where the big chips of metal are coming from... Or so it would seem.

If I had an 012 KTM that suffered a gearbox failure I'd be ringing up KTM U.S.A.! I had a gas tank crack on one of my Maicos, mentioned it to my dealer, and had a new tank in no time - free of charge (I didn't even ask for a replacement tank).

I can't hit the dealer till Wed.  I'm really trying to get KTM to pick up the charge on this.

I'll know more in a couple days though.

It may be more of a dealer issue than a KTM issue. When I bought my SX I noticed after the first ride a black spot at one of the welds on the pipe.It was a very small pinhole in the weld and could have been fixed easily enough but my dealer said-new bike-new pipe and had one in 3 days.

I hope I can get dealer help..

Good news for my parts though.  I was able to track down the 34tooth gear in PA.   Hopefully my bike will be back together by the end of next week!

Good luck with your bike man .  I would be livid if I had a 2012 with a slipping kicker and a dealer that wouldnt help . I would be calling corporate and letting them know one of there dealers is crap .

The KTM lives again!
It took a couple weeks to get all my parts and I slapped the bike together last night.

Dealer would not cover anything, and I couldn't get in touch with KTM.  This was expected.

Also, the service disc is still unavailable.... what is up with that.  It's April already.
