Title: The officially official hunting/fishing/outdoor thread
Post by: ford832 on August 22, 2011, 11:47:16 AM
Rather than stogging it full from the archives, how about from 2011 onward.
That leaves me pretty thin as it's been a rough year.I hope for more later. The last pic is my latest aqua-sition. A 1904-1921 18' Chestnut wood/canvas.It weighs in at a mere 120 lbs-a definite portage machine  :o

Cool pics.

I am taking the archery season off since my back has been so bad this year. I can't pull my bow and I don't rifle hunt anymore.

They did just make those legal in Pa for anyone a year ago or so. You used to need a special permit, which I could get if I wanted to. It's just not the same to me though, almost seems like cheating LOL.

You can use one in Maine now, but in the regular firearms season, not the archery season unless you are disabled.

That canoe is pretty but it has unusual lines, kind of like "Last of the Mohicans" or something.

Likely due to the sponsons on the sides.Chestnut sold any of their models either with or without them-on an 18 footer like this they add about 30 lbs-so I'm told anyway.Canoes in that day were pretty similar.Chestnut stole the design from Morris and Peterborough stole the stolen design from Chestnut who the sued Peterborough for stealing their stolen design. :D Business was all the same back then as well.
I don't know if the sponsons will stay there when I recanvas or not-we'll see.

Nobody else doing the hunting fishing thing? That's surprising.I've always found most riders cross over to these pursuits as well.
How about if we open it up to hunting fishing archives?I had just assumed there would be so many with this.I guess not. You're all a bunch of couch potatoes  ;D  ;)

I love hunting and fishing, but it seems like every place in my area is getting closed down.  I shot a 208lb * point whitetail about 5 miles from my house 2 years ago, went back to the same spot last year and it was stripped off an posted.  Same with my best fishing spot - no more access to the lake.  It is more discouraging than fun now.  My son will be old enough to hunt next year, but I probably won't have any place to bring him!!

Sorry ford, Great idea.
The reason I havn't posted is I am still too depressed I can't do either.

I did get out for a hunt 4 weeks ago but had no luck.
Actually I was walking over the brow of a hill and there was a large Bull that I was trying to walk around without the bloody thing charging me. As I rounded the Bull standing behind him in the shadows was a ...8 point Red Deer. :o
It was gone before I could lower the rifle.
Sneaky bastard.

I'll see if I can find some photos.

Meanwhile, he is a Vid off our last fly in hunt.

That's rough mxlord. We still have good areas around here but Nova Scotia is the most privately owned province in Canada.More and more, urban types are retiring to the country and buying it up-then posting it.Bah humbug. :(

TMKIWI,the chopper is pretty cool. You should be hunting from that.(I couldn't see the whole vid as my computer kept locking on it)
Maybe you need to be more inventive.Way back when one of my bike accidents left me with a badly shattered right arm(I'm right handed)
I was in a full cast and had it strapped to me for four months.Unfortunately, this happened just before the start of rabbit season and as I had the beagles we hunted with,I decided I was going too.
I ended up taking a single shot .410 and cutting the stock off but leaving the pistol grip, then cutting the barrel off just ahead of the wooden forestock. My hunting buddies dubbed it the pirate pistol. This left me shooting a pistol/shotgun left handed with a mitten.Did I mention how hard it is to balance on snow covered logs and such with one arm strapped to you? You'd be surprised how much you unknowingly use your arms for balance.Or try to shake off mittens while holding a gun and cock it off handed and take a shot at a rabbit travelling wfo with a dog behind it.
Interestingly, all my hunting buddies decided it was best I hunted that year alone-so I did-and I never did get anything but I was close a couple times.
You seem like an inventive sort with access to gear. You just need to put your mind to it  :)

Ha Ha. I can picture you walking round looking like Albert ( The 1 armed dishwasher from Robins Nest ).
I too would have said you can hunt on your own. ;D

I am not sure my nephew will be too pleased if I cut down his new 410.
Plus a 410 wont be big enough for the deer around here.

If you look at the start of the Vid you can see my cast from the original accident.
This was 1 week after.
I had it split so I could take it off to hold my rifle. :-X
Not this time. I will listen to the doctor.

The boys are trying to convince my to buy an electric reel so I can still fish. $2000. :o
I think I will just be "Bait Bitch". ;D

I always loved pics like that. For the subject(I've never caught a fish as big as me) as well as the period gear around it.Cool.
As for fishing with your buddies I was going to say that if they were any kind of friends at all, they'd hold your rod for you but that just sounded wrong. :o Maybe bait bitch is the way to go until you're healed  :D

I'm pounding in everything I can before she hates me like her mother.I'm hoping I have a couple years yet :)

On the 29/12/11 myself and a couple of mates went for a dive and came back with some of these.

While I was cooking the above crayfish Dave went for a walk up the road with his boy.
30 minutes later he turned up with this.

Prick used my gun as well. :'(

The next day we went for a fish and caught some of these.

Had a bloody good christmas. ;D
This is the reason I came back to NZ.
The cray's , the deer and the fish were caught within a 5km radius.

Salmon fishing in Washington is just nowhere near as good as Alaska, but I get a few here and there. Steel head season right now, but there is too much rain and snow runoff swelling up the rivers. In April I can hit Rainbow trout and Kokanee in the lakes again! I'm moving to New Orleans this Summer, so I'm hoping for some good fishing in the Gulf and maybe hunt some pigs in Texas and Alligator in the Bayou! Big plans, but Riding takes priority and most of money nowadays! ::)

All those poor little bunny rabbits! :-X

I've caught a few Steelhead and I read an article recently that thru DNA testing scientists have determined that they are not sea run rainbow trout (as previously thought) but rather an ancient species of salmon.

Those halibut would look good in my freezer. ;D

I agree, poor little bunnies-laying out there like that when they should be in a rappie pie(or rapure as the local acadians call it) mmmmmmmmmmm.
My beagles like them too  :D
Title: The officially official hunting/fishing/outdoor thread
Post by: Swimr2DaResQ on January 10, 2012, 03:42:06 AM
The bunnies were battered and fried!
The Salmon are either smoked in various brines or grilled on cedar planks(my favorite method)!
Halibut is great ant way you cook it, but I prefer blackened.
The deer is mostly summer sausage, breakfast sausage, german sausage with green chiles, and steaks from back srtaps and tenderloins!
Caribou was good but def not favorite, kinda sweet with a hint of wild game taste. Mostly ground meat for burgers and sausage.

I've had cariboo and enjoyed it. I've been told more than once by native Indians that there is little nutritional value in cariboo meat and that deer, moose and elk were always hunted first.
Title: The officially official hunting/fishing/outdoor thread
Post by: Swimr2DaResQ on January 10, 2012, 04:45:50 PM
Yeah the Caribou has very little nutrition, but it was a fun hunt! They move so fast across open ground and tundra with little effort, kind of a pain to get within rifle range. I've got lots of other hunts just didn't have a camera. :-[

Post by: ford832 on January 11, 2012, 01:23:00 AM
I had caribou once and it was terrible. My bro in law shot it on a trip to Newf and immediately afterwards the weather warmed and the outfitter's refrigerated storage broke so by the time he got it back to NS,it was definitely ripe.We tried to eat it but even with excessive rum we had a hard time getting it down.I've heard it's good though.
You would think caribou would have good nutritional value as it was what many northern people relied on for survival.
Speaking of nutrition though,if you found yourself stranded in the woods for the winter with no food source except for rabbits-and could catch as many as you wanted to eat-you'd starve to death before the spring.Strange but true.Anyone know why?Quiz of the day :D

Survivor man talked about rabbit "consumption" dangers.

Some friends bagged a black bear once, we ate it, and we all knew quickly that something was very wrong. There was a bad aftertaste that took over a week to get rid of.My friend finally figured it out - it was a garbage dump bear! To this day I won't eat bear.

Cool pics beaner. Why would anyone want to walk when you could paddle?  :)What kind of canoe is that?
Sachs-here I thought I'd seen all the survivorman episodes-I guess not.Rabbits are a good lean meat but that's the problem-not enough fat content. We need fat to survive and rabbits don't provide sufficient amounts to ensure it.
Speaking of Les Stroud, did you see his "off the grid" shows? That was pretty sweet.

I'm trying with the Mrs., but the water makes her a little nervous.
It's a Scott Explorer. We've had it for about 25 years, and it's been a great canoe. 14' and 56 lbs. it's easy to handle.
We're looking at a Scott 12' Kevlar. 40 lbs. will make my job a little easier.
I expect to take a trip with my older son this year. He likes some late season back woods, and that's OK with me.

Same year - different trip (sorry for the wrong bike)

Those aren't a bad size rookie-what species?
Cool pics beaner,my buddy had a KLX300-good bike.
My wife is a little leary in a canoe as well as she can't swim.I was pretty much brought up in one so our versions of "rough water" tend to be a little different. My 16'  65 lb fiberglass is fast, handles well and carries well-it's also tippy.I like it but she prefers the old 18' Chestnut.Surprisingly,it handles and paddles exceptionally well and not at all like a scow-especially given the fact it tips the scales at a little over 120 lbs  :o That's like 3 of your kevlar lighties.I don't really like carrying it  :(

Cool, snakeheads.I saw them a while back on discovery on that show where the Brit goes around the world fishing the big predatory fish.I don't think I'd dangle my toes in the water-or have a leak while standing waist deep. :o

Snakehead are a particularly brutal fish, and are currently going crazy in the united states. People would get them as pets and when they got to big they would release them in backyard stream, and from there they would just wipe out other species of fish. The Large Mouth Bass is considered one of the most aggressive fresh water fish in the united states, and it gets destroyed by the snakehead.

The same thing with those snack heads happened in Florida with the Burmese pythons. In my opinion, if someone is a responsible pet owner, they should get their facts straight before buying it so they know what to expect, especially size wise...

Last summer i was fishing with my grandad in tennessee and we both hooked up 20lb+ stripe bass at the same time.  My fish was easily 25lbs and my grandads was around 20lb.  To bad i only had my piece of crap phone to take a picture so i cant post the picture of the monster i caught.  The best part was we were both using the last two live shad we had left so it was the last pass down the river and we ended up hooking up two really nice fish.

Actually, she stole it from me that morning as she was chilled. That's my standard outfit.Around here they're known as a doe skin jacket(why I don't know but that's what we've always called them)
They were the standard red plaid hunting jacket years ago before blaze orange came around.
Interestingly, many have laughed at my choice of fashion over the years(I have many of the same thing in shirts) but the last couple years they have become stylish here.I knew if I waited long enough.... :D
Oneal was selling red plaid gear last year and I thought about it but really didn't need new gear.

Nice fish! I didn't even get my fishing license this year. My back was really bad earlier in the year and now I am in "archery mode" as my wife calls. Been shooting both the Bear Element compound and my take down recurve because depending on how my back feels that day will depend on which bow I use so I want to stay proficient with both bows.

Sturgeon are bottom feeders and siphon everything off of the bottom of the larger rivers here in the Pacific N.W..While they are now a protected species I've been told sturgeon are very tasty.

My first time out fishing was the May long weekend.I spent the morning scouting out an old racing area on my 500 Maico and then caught three nice rainbows in the afternoon spincasting with a lure and light tackle. :D

I should also add that about 10km downstream from where that sturgeon was caught in the 1940's an even bigger one was caught. The guy used his Ford pickup to pull it out of the river.

Well Sachs,it would appear your choice of fish mirrors your choice of motorcycle. What was it you said a Sturgeon was again?  ;)

SachsGS - About 25 years ago there was a kid I went to school with (he was kind of slow...) who called himself the Harbormaster of the river that is the border between Maine and New Hampshire about 15 miles up from the coast.  He caught a 14 foot, 800+ pound sturgeon using gill nets, dragged it out with his truck, and beat it to death with a hammer.  Next thing he did was call the local papers and told them he caught a sea monster!!  They came down, took a lot of pictures, but unfortunately, so did the game wardens....  He got a huge fine, didn't even have a fishing license.  It was estimated to be about 100 years old, and had a few dozen pounds of roe that would have been worth thousands of dollars.  What a moron....

The Fraser river, here in British Columbia, is "kind of" divided into two by the Fraser Canyon which is a rapid filled, treacherous section of water. The monster sturgeon, like the one the guy caught, live in the lower section and can be caught basically right on the Vancouver water front. Upstream of the canyon a different sub species of sturgeon live and these are also excellent to catch.

That is one monster He's got! I would love to hunt down there for some Rocky Mountain Elk. We have Roosevelt Elk up here in WA. They are monsters, but their racks just don't compare to the Rocky's. When a big bull is only 20-30 yds from you and he starts calling, its a little intimidating and awesome, you feel it in your chest!

I took the little one out Saturday night so she could sleep out under the stars-mainly because it was close to a full moon so would be cool for her to be able to look up from her bed and see nothing but tree tops, stars and the moon.
Anyhoo, here's camp Ford.We canoed up Gaspereau Lake until whitecaps forced us to turn and run for shore so we figured camp was good at that point. It fogged in through the night and the trees started dripping on us by dawn and the temp dropped to about +4 C but no big deal.
My daughter's the photog-the exception being the one pic I took of her trying to sleep in.I'm no photographer for sure.

Looks like fun! What make and how many feet is your canoe?

I read an article in the news back in August about a guy who had a snooze beside the trail and dreamed that his dog was licking him in the face. He woke up only to discover it was a black bear giving him a kiss! :-X

We're in black bear and coyote country so I had our food roped up a little ways away and slept with my trusty 18" fiskars by my side just in case something needed a little bop on the head in the night.
The canoe is a 16' fibreglass made by York River Canoes in the late 70's or early 80's(Peterborough Ont. I think)
I like it.It's fast, handles well and you sit high. The obvious downsides are that it's tippy and has very little freeboard when loaded. It's not for someone not fond of canoes. My wife hates it-lol.
I've got an 18' Chestnut but it's a 125lb's so I took the other as she was staying home. The Chestnut, though a pig weight-wise,also handles and paddles remarkably well and carries a much larger load with ease.

Looks like good fun. We didn't get out much this year, and the way the weather is now, it doesn't look like we'll get out again. It's rained for about a month now. I've had enough.

kiwi i don't know what to make of the last photo. is it customary to "ride" the animal after you shoot it, down down under?

Only when no one is looking. ???

Nope. Would rather drink my own piss. Bear Grylls developed a taste for urine after being offered a Fosters 1 day. Piss has better taste and more nutrients. ;)
It's a woodstock bourbon.
