Title: PROJECT: 2001 RM125
Post by: motoxr377 on August 10, 2011, 05:01:02 AM
Hey all,

I bought a RM just like the one I used to have, back in December.
...took it to the track a few times, where I realized it was too softly sprung by about 50 lbs.
...so when I recently returned from Afghanistan, I decided to strip her bare to find worn bearings, and an almost-seized swingarm pivot bolt. That was pretty scary. She's getting new everything, and I plan on posting updates often to track progress and purchases.
I fired up the bead blast cabinent and cleaned up the powervalve covers, water pump cover, and hubs for powdercoating.
(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/BugliariN/2001%20Suzuki%20RM125/RMbluehubs.jpg)The hubs were picked up today, and came out great! I'm getting the frame coated in the same transluscent blue.
More to follow! Lots of pics to take as the parts roll in!

Hey cool man! That blue is gonna look sweet with the yellow plastic. :)

Looks like a great project.  The hubs turned out nice!  Be advised if that is a base coat clear coat
translucent, it may not respond well to the bump and grind of motocross.  You might want to
consider using a super durable clear or possibly a one step powder that matches the hubs on your
frame.

What kind of performance upgrades are you thinking about?

Looking forward to seeing your progress pictures.

Have fun with it.

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone.
Thanks for the info, dogger. The first coat was silver, then the blue, then a clear coat.

For performance gains right now the internals will be stock, and I plan on goin to Eric Gorr's 144 kit once it needs a top end again. I have a full Hinson clutch that was NOS from a factory support team (hub, plates, basket, etc), a Boyesen Rad valve on the intake side, and a pro circuit works pipe with R304 silencer. I'm picking up the parts this Saturday. There are more to list as well... like gold Excels... But I don't want to spoil it!

Blue looks great on the RM,s  I had the same bike, put a FMF 2map toggle switch ignition-wolf made the ignition, a SRS HGS pipe with a trick SRS silencer, carbon tech mid to top reeds, back the tensioner adjuster out-so the power valve opens quicker, RG3 clamp, pro-action revalve, with stiffer springs-still too soft, pc pegs. Pipe and ignition woke it up,ran great  it was faster than my 04 cr125 stock, not a 06 cr125 tho. With the 04 cr125 ported and carb borred to 40mm, it would kill the RM, just saying. Still the RM,s a great bike, except the pegs are too low, hit the ground with feet on the pegs, they raised them in 02.

Got up to NY yesterday and worked with my father on truing the wheelsets, and also brought up the engine to disassemble and reassemble, by his expert hands (and tools). Also picked up some more parts!
NOS out-of-production sand cast magnesium Pro Circuit covers... found on eBay!
getting the stem pressed in to the new lower clamp, new upper clamp as well.
Zeta brake clevis, PC axle blocks, WC frame guards, and a Universal skidplate which I'm not too sure about.
The powdercoater did a great job on the wrinkle-black coating.
The MotionPro deluxe suspension service tool should keep headaches manageable.
hubs and rims united! looks cool!

Hinson basket, hub, pressure plate, discs, and springs, score!

As always, more to follow! Soon!

More to follow! Slowly...
I'd like to thank Final Touch Powdercoating in Spring Lake, NC
http://finaltouchpowdercoating.com/ (http://finaltouchpowdercoating.com/)
But mostly, I'd like to thank Brett at ICW Bike Stands/Radiator Repair. He fixed the frame and straigtened a bent radiator for a great deal when I dropped by his shop in Clayton, NC. He advertises in the back of most magazines and builds works-style radiators, seam welding, and bracing, available to the public. His work is featured on ARMA's Suzukis, JGR's Yamahas, and so on. But most of all, he's a stand-up hero, and one of the last people I can surely say that about anymore (plus, his rides are an '05 and '09 YZ125).
Check him out at http://www.icwbikestands.com/Site/Home.html (http://www.icwbikestands.com/Site/Home.html)

Sorry!  :D
The suspension's on it's way to Factory Connection right now. Although it's a one day turnaround, it takes a week's shipping both ways! To add to that, I'm attending a course this month that takes me away from the bike and family for a couple weeks... :(
Should be close by the end of October!

Your bike is looking good!

I went to high school in Harnett county, just north of Spring Lake. My Parents still live there and my Dad rides all around NC at Firelane mx/atv training facility, Wide Open, Windy Hills, NC Motorsports Park ,etc....! I don't make it down there very often, but when I do we ride alot!
He rides a 450, but at least he is riding! Haha.

That's pretty awesome, I've only ridden Devil's Ridge and Wide Open so far. Good tracks. A lot different than the ones I grew up on in District 3&4 (Broome-Tioga and Unadilla). New York tracks are rocky as hell. Put on the hour meter and exhaust today.

Take your time, buy a factory service manual from your dealer and study every procedure so that you fully understand it. Then proceed! Ask questions is the Technical forum.
