aside from the the 11' ktm xc 250, were there any jap bikes that were 6 speeds? i would like a 6th gear for street use. i have been out of the loop for 15 years, so i don't know what was produced in the 2000's.

I prefer it that way though... You get more out of 2nd gear which is a common cornering gear

I think the 1980 YZ250 was a 6 speed, but good luck making one street legal....

My 2003 KDX200 is a 6 speed, but it's 50cc smaller than what you asked :D .
The 250 engines Honda put in the race 250R 3 and 4 wheelers were 6 speeds. Some of the Husky 250's were also 6 speeds but not the CR's, just the enduro bikes. Those are about the closest I can think of.

That's a good point about the Honda 250R motors from the 80's... I mentioned it recently, but those motors can basically be modded to your hearts extent.
Not sure if you were looking to do a 1-off custom build, or put a dirtbike on the street, but those motors might be an option for you Rodney.

basically, the 11 ktm 250xc is the perfect bike for me, with a SM wheelset & the dirt setup. i would like it to be plated, whether it be under the table means or not... seems like the the ktm will be at least 10k after all is said and done, so i was just looking for cheaper, mx based machinery that would fit the bill as well.

Absolutely Rodney the GasGas 250 is imo your best bet to get a 2-stroker on the road. One of the GG models comes with lights & blinkers & they are suppose to be very reliable well built bikes! :)

The Husqvarna WR-300 would be one of my favorite bikes & I would own one if I did'nt already have my KTM-300xc. Sometimes I wish I would have bought the KTM-300xc-w model because after riding a friends KTM-250xc-w I really liked the wide ratio transmission! First gear was almost geared too low but from third gear to sixth gear his 250xc-w just kept pulling & pulling & I know a 300xc-w would be a good bit faster when I needed it to be!

The '11 XC and XC-W transmissions will swap right into older 250s and 300s. It's almost $1k in parts but if you find the right bike to start with you should be able to come in way under that $10k mark.

My '82 Husky 250CR (and in fact all the evolution-generation Huskies) is a six-speed. If you can get an enduro with lights and things on the bike you might be able to make that street-legal, and then you'll have the ability to have a 360, 390, or even a 430. All of them are good strong motors, and they're built to withstand attack from a howitzer battery and still run.
