Title: YZ Project pics.
Post by: Charles Owens on February 24, 2011, 10:59:15 AM
Hey guys, I'll post up to date pics here, as the project progresses.

I just finished tearing it down. I just have to remove the foot pegs, and throw it in the blast cabinet. :)

Nice to see that our frame isn't made out of recycled beer cans like the competition!

I too am a fan of Chromoly frames, biggest factor in my purchase of the KX250. I considered the RM250 but prefered the hidden gas tank/seamless shroud design of the KX. Despite the shroud/gas tank seam  on the Yamaha, it had a good feel ergonomicaly and I didn't notice it. But the aluminum chassis of the 05 yz250 compared to the 03 yz250 I tested felt kinda stiff when apexing a wide turn at speed.

If you want to be taken seriously with this project on other websites, eg VitalMX etc, you better be going to win some decent amateur level races in the A class or +25. Otherwise this project, and the WHOLE WEBSITE, will be considered a joke, and the laughing stock of all that use moto forums. I really hope this doesnt go bad, and I hope you realise the implications of not doing this properly if you are going to post on other websites. Best of luck, it seems at the moment that you are going to need it.

Remember, this is a test project. This will guide the path towards the goal of getting a pro racer on a pro level bike :)
And don't be worried, you get to choose the rider.

Yeah, but the point is, if you are going to post on other websites about this project it needs to be done professionally to promote the website, the rider, and show that two strokes can still be competitive. If you go and put a C grade swapper out there in some local club races on an 01 YZ 125, and then go and boast about getting top five finishes on other moto websites, the project, the rider, the two stroke motocross website, and to an extent two strokes in general, will be considered a joke. In my opinion, starting such a project and using a 10 year old bike is a bad idea, unless it is done in jest to prove a point. Going all out on this bike to make it look "good" should not be the important part of a project such as this one. At the moment, this project to me seems to be heading in the wrong direction. A website that is reknown worldwide such as this one is, needs to realise that even if a "test" project is taken on, that a lot of people will know about it. If you are trying to gain some knowledge as far as putting a race team together, then keep it fairly quiet, and maybe put the odd post on the general moto talk page on this website. Don't go and advertise it everywhere. Leave that untill the real deal pro two stroke team is together, and develop a massive worldwide following, which, with a two stroke race bike, and the internet, would be easy to do. Look at the hype that surrounded Project two 50. That was crazy, and when it failed, everyone discredited it, and wrote off two strokes at the pro level. There is far reaching effects, that I dont think are being considered by those involved. My opinion, and I hope that it is at least read and taken in.

Here's a shot of my old '04 YZ (at Stanmore).
It's a good example of how a red and white version turns out.

I hear what you're saying, but the truth is, that the Pro level on the National AMA indoor and outdoor series, is obtainable by maybe 8% of those of us who race. At that level, a bike from the early 90's could still be competitive in the right hands.

I don't think that this project is geared toward chasing a "Lites" Pro class title.

I think IT IS focused more toward the grass roots of the sport.

This project is allowing 2 stroke riders/fans to get involved in something bigger than what's in their garage.

I'm hoping to see it develope the type of comradery that the sport has been missing since the the late 90's.

Look at how many people on this forum, and on FB are following and participating in this project, and hanging on to every post in the Poll threads.

That what this project is about to me.

F#*k the factory race teams and Pro AMA. That's all just a big commercial to sell these new expensive, over weight, overpowered, under reliable, bikes.

I know I don't own a Semi truck full of tools, spare motors etc. I don't put a new motor in my bike after every race. And neither does the other 92% of dirt bike guys in the real world.
GRASS ROOTS IS MOTOCROSS with out it there are no factory teams

That about sums it up, thanks myc. :)
The main goal was to get you guys involved, it is turning into a great project, with lots of support.
The bike will be making rounds for photos and test rides.
Any one of you that want to ride it, can. It would just have to be were the bike happens to be at the time. Test track/photo shoot etc. :)
Thanks guys!

Swapper, this bike became a test run project. So things don't go bad when TSM Racing starts up in 2012.
When we make an attempt at the pro level, we will be ready. :)
I don't care what the media, other websites or anyone else has to say.
I'm not here to walk to the line, and do things how other people do them.
This is meant to be a fun project to get you guys involved, not necessarily to win.
It's built for the fans, and every one of them can take a ride on it if they want.
I don't care if it comes in last place, as long as you guys enjoyed the ride!
I completely understand what your saYING, I just don't think it applies here.
You sound like the Vital guys, take a load off and enjoy it. :)
Pro racing is like reality TV..
I would rather make the general population happy with an awesome project, than be worried about politics of pro racing. :)

Fair enough, I just dont US to become the laughing stock of the moto industry. People already think we wear tinfoil hats and blame Honda Corp. for everything from Civil wars to the rise of the four stroke. I just dont want any more ammunition out there for the haters to jump on and use. I still think that thoughtful decisions need to be made on what gets put on other websites, especially if you want to put a pro team out there on for 2012. Otherwise you will be completely written off and will not get any support at a time when you need it the most. Knowing the industry as well as I do, and how it works, and how considerably small it is, small miscalculations in judgement can have severe implications. All i am saying is, be smart in what you do, and dont take a reckless abandon approach, and act like you dont care what other people think. It WILL come back and bite you !!

Thanks.

Ok.. I am a very smart guy. And I know exactly what I'm doing.
I already have sponsors lined up for 2012. Everyone thinks this is a great project.
Like Myc said, this IS grassroots. The majority of people complainabout the current state of MX.
The coverage is boring, the races are usually weak.
How about if I get hooked up with some good connections, like a new sponsor we have and just set up a 2 stroke series across the US?
My plans are much larger than I think anyone realizes. :) Stay tuned.

I would be much happier letting a kid racing out of his van, ride this bike than I would letting any Pro.

Tell you what, I (my team=wife and kids) would ride for TMS , in the 2011-2012 SERA Enduro series 30+ 0pen C:D, all I would require is 2 GIANT TMS logo stickers for my 18" enclosed trailer, or a 12' banner to hang on my easy up canopy, some smaller stickers for my/teams bikes and helmets, and my entry fees ($30 a race pre registration). We would distribute mini-fliers, or TSM magazine(if it actualizes) to promote the site on Saturday at the kids event, and have them available in my pit all weekend. We would also take some pictures and I would write an article about the event and my race/results, to be posted on the site or published in the mag.

That sounds good Myc.

I need to stop posting before I fully wake up. I apologize Swapper, didn't mean to sound like an a-hole. I'm just up to my neck and buried at my desk.
All I'm trying to do is give you something to enjoy and take part in.
The sponsors will be more than happy with the traffic they get from our project, it's more about local support than anything else.
We do have big plans, anything you guys want or suggested we will do our best to do.
A mag, racing series, project build the reader can participate in.
I am very fortunate to have some very good connections, that want to get things done the same way I do.
This is going to be a great year. :)

I'm here for you guys. I'm selling my bike to fund this project, because I know if I was a reader I would be all over being able to participate in a project like this.
Thanks Guys! I'll try not to post early morning anymore!

I wasn't busting your ass Swapper, I just wanted to clarify my outlook on what this project is about to me. I in no way intended to speak for Charles or TSM. My words were soley intended to represent my feelings and opinion of this site, this project, and off road motorcycling/racing in the United States under the current AMA rule. It just so happened that my opinions are shared by the moderators, go figure.
I personally am not worried in the least about being a member of forum considered by four stroke riders, racers, and fans, a "laughing stock", For I will be the one at the dealer picking up my $125 topend kit, that I will install myself, in less than an hour, laughing at the guy unloading his broken fourstroke into the repair department, looking at a $2000+ repair bill, and remembering me snaking his line, and throwing roost in his face last weekend. ;D

Swapper just missed a word, which I assume was 'want' - as in , "I don't want US to..."

There's an 'modify' (edit) feature, Swappster!

And I think, he might really have meant that , during the process, and all through any releases of information, it might be wise to continually point out that it IS all about the grass roots level racing. Without, also, continually slagging 4t reliability and cost. Because the idiots who are out there WILL try to make it / think that it's about 'domination'. Just let the $ numbers, fun, and, perhaps, results, do the talking.

They are that limited in their thinking, that they won't see that it's about making an older, simpler bike, that can be used as a grass roots, clubman level racer.

So, it would be wise, also, to count the pennies, keeping it as affordable as possible  (the All Balls very much points to that) - as, if it shows any tendency towards being expensive / unnecessarily blingy, or be overly ambitious in the claims made for the bike, those same drongos will  fixate on that.

But I'm sure Charles, and , I hope, most of us here, are aware of all the points I've made above.

Woah, I didn't mean to offend you Swapper. My apologies. Just a simple miscommunication. And I have not intended to offend you with anything I have written on this forum, I'm just speaking how I really feel. I didn't consider it to be a fight, just a simple debate. Your point of view is worth just as much as anyone else around here. Don't feel discouraged to speak your mind, it's just that my point of view is different than yours.

Sorry, but I'm with Swapper, I don't get it, why "Bling" a 10 year old 125 ?
It just screams "Try Hard " , Why not save your money on shiney things for an old bike and spend it on a new bike and perhaps suspension and engine tuning...noticed I didn't say bolt on bits.
It's obvious that we Aussies don't realise that anodizing and decals actually makes your bike faster :-*

Nobody ever said that would make it faster. There is nothing wrong with taking pride in the appearance of your machine. It is getting plenty of performance mods (not just "bolt on bling"), so I don't see the problem with wanting it to look nice as well as run nice.

The point of a project bike is not to buy a new bike, but take an old one and make it as good as new. It's called "Project YZ" not "Bought New YZ"  :D .

:-* I do not understand the discontent with some members about this project, I personally think it's a great idea to take an older bike strip it down make it look good(powder coat etc..) It's also mentioned that motor work is also part of the project....we all know it's stupid easy to freshen up the top end, maybe throw in a pipe, silencer, and Vforce3 or Boysen reeds, revalve the suspension and hell you have a better than new bike. People need to take this for what it is FUN

Thanks.
dude chill out this is not a pro project its to get have fun give people a chance to design a bike that they want no one on this site cares that the bike is 10 years old age of bike has nothing to do with how well the bike is going to look or run or place nor does anyone really care what level the bike will be raced in jsut as long as it is a two stroke and its out there sporting that great tsm logo and  proving the 2 is always better than 4

the pictures of the parts coming back from powder coating do them no justice.  the red of the frame and spring is a perfect shade. better than what i pictured red wagon to be. the parts literally look like they were just dipped in paint. this bike is gonna be so sick! i cant effin wait! :-*

Welcome sfair!
I just got home, drove 2 hours to Newport News to get this frame done. (wouldn't fit in our oven)
But damn it looks good. :D
There was also a package waiting from Boyesen, they hooked it up!  :D

I am glad its a YZ and not a Honda for 2 reasons.

1. Yamaha still makes 2 strokes.

2. Yamaha donates large sums of money every year to off-road riding areas, including one of the ones I ride.

Hey guys. I know the project is taking longer than expected. I do appologize.
I had originally planned on having it finished weeks ago, but things came up.
The suspension arrived from Pro Logics, and the motor came back yesterday.
Today I added the goodies from Boyesen.
What color do you guys want the Power Valve covers coated?

Can I throw my two cents in and I don't mean to come off sounding like a jerk or anything...

Your bike looks freaking great. Seriously it looks fantastic.

I think you have a fantastic story here. I mean not only is it interesting in that it makes people THINK about the fact that these other items besides just the piston need maint., but it shows them "Hey bearings, linkage, lube etc...".

I think the 144cc kit is fantastic because the YZ125 is one of the most popular bikes made. So it gives owners with roached cylinders an alternative - and not only an alternative but a BETTER alternative because it gives it more power and makes it easier to ride and certainly that creates better lap times.

I also think that whether or not you put a pro on it or a rank amateur is 100% unimportant. It's an interesting article - look at some of the tests they do in the magazines such as "budget bikes" they talk about their build but they rarely race them! Those articles happen all the time - why? Simple not everyone can afford a $10,000 race ready thumper.

What you did here was fun, exciting to those reading it because they wanted to see it happen and well it developed "interest" and so that makes it a 100% success.

Does this bike have to win nationals? No... can it race against 250F's at the local level? Maybe with a good rider on it -but- it also shows you can build something, have fun and not spend a trillion dollars by building a bike you already have.

Now here is an FYI. IRONICALLY The first ever motorcycle test on the internet was called "CAN AN OLDER BIKE BE COMPETITIVE and it was a KX500 that was built up exactly like this YZ125 was... From bottom to top from scratch. This story reminds me of that one very much...

Good job guys... and the first line said I hope I don't come off snotty... That was in ref to some saying this was going to HURT if you didn't build a race winner... not every bike is a race winner, ask KTM and the guys riding 350SX thumpers... what you did do was post a WINNER of a story for everyone to read and follow along with. And that is what this is all about.

Peace, Mikeee P

Can I throw my two cents in and I don't mean to come off sounding like a jerk or anything...

Your bike looks freaking great. Seriously it looks fantastic.

Mike, I agree. The project wasnt about putting the fastest rider on the bike, it was about showing what can be done, and showing how cool the thing can look! The bike is currently out there for the FANS to race! It was a family project

Hahaha now THAT is where I might disagree with ya - I don't think I'd let anyone ride that bike after I built it! hahaha...

I'm really impressed with the way the bike "looks". It's unique in the red white but not normal Yamaha red and white colors... very cool.

The bike looks and sounds absolutely awesome!! Great job on the build, I am honored to have been a part of the project by being able top vote on the different aspects of the build, I just wish I could have gotten my hands dirty. ;D

Thanks guys! I am so glad it's finished, I'm sure you are too.
Jeremy liked it, he only got 3 or so laps on it. The front end slid out on some hard pack, tore his elbow up, X-Rays on Wednesday. :/

It wasn't as smooth as I would like, I just finished up correcting the jetting issue. It runs much better now. :)
More pics and vids to come. :)

It's a controversial topic but I had problems with some of the jetting issues on many of the 144cc builds I did (CR134, KTM144, RM144, KX144 etc...)...

The KTM was a jetting nightmare. I tried everything and then I was given the opportunity to try something. I was the first mag to test the iCAT. I put it on the KTM144 and it didn't run a bit better. I was riding on a track where it was wide open everywhere... there was one section I didn't like and I turned around and started to roll it on - WHOA - the bike had so much more midrange, and was so much more crisp I was shocked! I plugged it in, undid it. Plugged it in and tested again, undid it again... there wasn't a single question that the roll on power and the actual jetting woes almost completely disappeared.

As I was putting those words on the web - basically that the bikes jetting was cleaner and it pulled much harder without really offering any more peak power that I could see - my friend Timmy Ferry tested one and here is a full factory rider at the time and his words were almost exactly what mine were. Way crisper, pulled harder, but didn't really seem to offer any more hp just like perfect jetting... I mean I literally couldn't tell it was on there when I was holding it WFO - but man, get down there and have to roll it on some and it was like a different bike.

I got scoffed at quite a bit for my story but stuck with it and stick with it to this day - and the riders that raced with it stick with it... So consider trying one if you can get your hands on it. They seem to work really well on the 144cc bikes!

BTW they did a dyno test once and it showed no gains - but DYNO's of course the dyno was tested at full throttle SETTINGS... had they used 50%/75% throttle settings I wonder how much more power it might have been making than the stock bike! Only Donn Maeda from MXRacer Magazine now Transworld MX stepped up and said he saw a diff and liked it... Give 'em a shot. Tom Wallace was the last one selling them as a distributor here in America. He's a former factory mechanic and I believe he has a shop in Nevada now.

Peace, Mikeee P

A Husky would be cool. But probably not very cost effective. Try to keep it a steel framed bike though.

Those bits of snake oil are just a resitor and a diode $5 worth of electronic parts. Check the Patent Application on line. I'll back any dyno sweep result I can see a 0.5HP gain no problems.

Just want to say your bike looks sweet. Wasn't around during the process but enjoyed reading through, had to jump ahead for the pics,I'm impatient   :D. The controls are my favorite part, they just flow so well with the colors and all. What I really dug is this is the type of upgrades I do when play money is available.  Not titanium bolts and engine swaps.
