Title: 2003 RM250, hard getting into Nuetral and falls out of 3rd gear under load.
Post by: Sideways17 on February 16, 2011, 11:42:07 AM
My rm is hard to get into N. It will go into N if you go to 2nd gear and push the shifter down slightly. If you go to 1st and pull the shifter up to N the normal way if slips out of nuetral. Its weird...

It has also falls out of 3rd gear under load. There's a uphill double at my local track that the bike has fallen outta gear while making the run to the face. Its pretty scary!

Any ideas on these 2 problems?

The neutral problem could be a combination of old oil making the clutch drag,Clutch adjustment, Idling too high.
My old 01 RM had the same problem and i just put up with it.

Jumping out of 3rd ?. I have seen the stopper which the gear shift shaft spring presses aginst come loose and give you false neutrals.
Also the bolt that holds the shift cam stopper to the drum come loose.
Pull of your right hand crankcase cover and you can see if anything is loose. The stopper MUST be loctited in.
Check that first other wise you may need new gears.

A worn clutch basket/hub will also make nuetral had to find, but I agree w TMKIWI that it may be the shift cam stopper or worn shift fork.
At the age your bike is, you should probably split the cases and overhaul the lowerend and tranny. new bearings, seals, check for wear on the gears, and shift forks, and replace anything that has wear. I believe that Microblue has a ceramic bearing kit for your bike, I hear that they are the bomb diggity, as my kids say. And the reduced friction increases the horsepower signifigantly.

Your transmission is supported on either end by ball bearings and one or more of these bearings could be failing (had it happen to a bike of mine with similar symptoms).

Mechanical systems inevitably fail.  I ride probably easier than most, but lost 2nd gear on my 98 YZ250 last year. The end bearing on one of the shafts failed and the shrapnel killed a couple other gears and bearings.  Cost me about $600, what do you think that would have cost if it was a 4-st?  $3000 at least, how many 20 year old kids have the cash to fix that and keep racing?  That would have been the end for me at that age.....  I could have handled $600 though...

If you have the ability to tear the bottom end down do so right away don't even ride it you will get hurt or grenade the tranny. I think you have something bad going wrong in the trannys gears.
