Title: '97 vs. '01 KX250
Post by: Burnt1Dragon on January 25, 2011, 04:44:17 PM
Hey all,
I have a '97 and just picked up a '01 KX250.  If you haven't already guessed, I want to combine the best of each bike to build one great ride!  Other than the ignition system and carburetor, are there any differences in the two bikes that I should consider?  Are the Forks and Shocks the same? Swing arm and links? Triple Clamps? Breaking? Are there any differences in power characteristics of the two engines?  I know it's alot of info to ask, but I'm getting nowhere on my own.  Any help will be great, and hopefully some day I can contribute some info back!
Thanks,
Mike

Too easy.If it were me,I'd make one into a woods bike and one in to a track bike.Failing that, you should probably post your question somewhere like this  http://www1.dlinksearch.com/track/click.php?curl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.kxriders.com%2F&q=kxriders&head=Welcome+to+%3Cb%3EKXRiders%3C%2Fb%3E.com&network=yahoo-ysp&ad_grp=MAINRESULTS&ad_grp_pos=0&type=user_query (http://www1.dlinksearch.com/track/click.php?curl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.kxriders.com%2F&q=kxriders&head=Welcome+to+%3Cb%3EKXRiders%3C%2Fb%3E.com&network=yahoo-ysp&ad_grp=MAINRESULTS&ad_grp_pos=0&type=user_query)
There are some kx riders here that may be of more help.

I like the 2 purpose-2 bike idea a little though.

I am a Kawasaki fan. I like the 2001 better than the 1997. Instead of trying to combine them I would just set up the 2001 nicely for the type of riding you do most. If you want to hang on to the 1997, maybe restore it for fun and have a nice back up.

I agree with Coop.
If you can afford to keep both, Do.

Nice! Now that's what I'm looking for! Thanks  :). Now...  could you elaborate on why you like the '01 better?  If I look at the bikes beside eachother, there are no real differences other than plastics and the aluminum subframe on the '01. I did find information on spring rates and such, that differ between the two, but what about the things I don't see? ie; engine components, powerband?  The frames are identical the motor castings are identical... is there anything realllly different?

I will be keeping both, just want to put the best of... on one frame, for lack of better phrasing.  Mostly focusing on the motocross side of things.  The other will be a spare.  I would like to add, that the '97 is in better shape than the '01.

Yeah I don't know what came over me :)

As far as why I like the 2001 one better, I have a couple reasons. The suspension is better and the peg/seat/bar relationship felt better to me. The combo seem to handle much nicer than the older 96-97 KX's I have ridden. Plus overall it's a better looking bike to me. Plus that era seemed to make better power to me than the older ones I rode.

there are not very many parts that will interchange, the axles, fork tubes, swingarm axle, are all a bigger diameter on the 01. although they look the same they made alot of geometric changes to the frames, motor angle, port timing, trust me man fix up the 01 and moto it. Keep the 97 around as a practice bike.

Agree, they may appear similar but there were a lot of changes between those years. 1999-2002 are all pretty similar, but the 94-98 bikes are different.

I can vouch for the '01, I have an '01 and I really like it, I've ridden the newer kx's and I still like the 99-02 bikes better(minus the motor)! I rode a 98 kx 250 a year or so ago and noticed quite a bit of difference in the power band, the 98 seemed to have a more mellow powerband and somewhat smoother, my 01 hits hard but it dies off fairly quick, all in all I can't complain it always runs great when it is jetted properly.

yes indeed the 98 was a sweet motor, I hear they were a favorite among offroad guys. My 07 is really sweet after some tweeking

Thanks...  yeah, I often read or hear about the '01 motor hitting hard but falls off quick.  I haven't ridden my '01 yet, but the '97 sounds alot like the '98 you rode. Great info! Very comfortable with the powerband on the '97, but I hate the forks! It sounds like the '01 is an improvement in handling though.

FMF SST pipe and powercore silencer used in conjuction with the Vforce2 reedblock will solve all the woes of the 01 powerband with out having to machine anything.
Be sure to protect your investment by using a quality metal polish/protectant(I forgot the brand I use, but I'll look later and post it) on the pipe at every wash. take it off and wax that sucker up, it's only two springs and two bolts, if you don't it'll rust up faster than you can turn a burger into a turd.. also repack the silencer at least every 20 hours if not 12.

I run the SST pipe and silencer, and I really like it over the Gnarly I had on it before. The SST pipe definitely improved the entire powerband. I also have the V-Force 3 system. This combo has worked very well on my '01. However, I have heard some negatives things on the SST pipe and what it does to piston crown temperatures, I don't know the details about, but IMO it works great!  8)

"I have heard some negatives things on the SST pipe and what it does to piston crown temperatures, "
run a cooler plug or get the optional lower compression base gasket.
I personally run a Gnarly on my 07, but the power is way more broad than the 01.
