Rick Johnson: A true superstar
David Thorpe: Being English and having Dave top the world in the premier class 3times was great.
Erik Geboers: My 1st gp at Hawkstone park was simply awesome, my dad had only seen schoolboy moto-x and
to this day still talks about how fast Geboers was..
-
I was very fortunate to have spent some time with Rick Johnson is 1988, what a great racer.
Certainly he is on the list... although to be honest I have a hard time picking only three!!
In no particular order -
Bob Hannah - Brilliant marketer, probably copied Ali to get the folks going. Always said what he felt, even if it would piss folks off. Very fast racer, not the best riding style but determined to win...
Danny Chandler - Such determination. He was almost unbeatable for a time... but his biggest asset was that he never gave up. There is a photo of him on the internet going race speed with his bars bent like a pretzel.. I can't imagine any rider of today doing that (maybe RC but he's not racing anymore)
Special mention.
Ricky Carmichael - This is a guy with some serious heart... he re-invented himself after Bubba came on the scene, almost re-working his entire riding style to compete and beat him... plus he's a big two-stroke fan...
John Dowd - This guy's racing career spans more years that many of the racers competing today. His third place overall at Southwick this summer cements him as one of the very best..... plus he races a cool 250 two stroke whenever he can.
-
Kent Howerton, Roger Dcoster, Danny Chandler Kent because he's from here. Very very fast, has helped me numerous times with my riding( especially when I was a kid). He's also very approachable( I never saw him turn someone down for an autograph request). Roger because when I was 12 years old in 1977 at the Trans-Am race at Lake Whitney Texas he took the time to talk to me and let me sit on his works Suzuki's. Man what an impression he made on me( I still like Suzuki's). Danny because the guy had juevos the size of bowling balls!!!!!!! Man was he fun to watch ride.

Adolf Weil
Willi Bauer
Ake Jonsson
The men that made Maico!
-
Marty Smith, he was the man, all my friends (myself included) idolized him
Roger the doger DeCoster, he was just so smooth
Bob get the hell out of my way hurricane Hannah
I think I'm showing my age here... I started following these guys back in the early 70's
-
Hannah,Lackey, and Ward...
-
I started following these guys last year.
-
My first bike was a 1979 yz 80 and the big guy on Yamahas at the time was Bob Hannah so he was the first guy I rooted for. To be honest I didn't really know who the riders were back then. Since I got back into riding I have seen more MX stuff from the old days and have come to like Danny Chandler, Brad Lackey, and Heiki Mikkola as alot of my family comes from Finland.
-
Torsten Hallman - 4 time 250cc world champion 1962, 1963, 1966 and 1967, all on husqys. Contributed to bringing the sport to the US and founder of Thor.
HÃ¥kan Carlqvist - 2 time world champion 1979 on a husqy 250cc and 1983 on a yamaha 500cc. (The guy who stopped for a beer midrace in namur)
Thorleif Hansen - Probably the fastest man never to win a world championship someone said about him some time ago. 62 years old and still riding pretty good. 2008 MTA Vet World Championships, but that's not a real world championship i know.
-
Carlqvist stopped in the middle of a race for a beer? He's moved way up on my list now. I'm not a big fan of beer, but I am a big fan of doing cocky things to piss people off.
-
yes he did :D
carla Namur 1988 "beer stop" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZWzNd1DLac&feature=related#)
Not sure if was midrace but it was sometime during the race whne was leading big anyways

Some people have all the luck.
Yes,luck of being at the right time at the right place.......
and finding people with the same interest... :D

O.K. being an Aussie, I'd have to say;
1. Stephen Gall. (Australian version of Bob Hannah, took MX to the next level in the '70s/'80s
2. Damon Bradshaw.( Loved his attitude. Loved his "battles" with Matachivich, wonder what the AMA would have to say about the blatant take out moves of the '92 supercross series.)
3. Bad Brad Lackey. ( Too cool for school, still holds the title for the coolest helmet paint job- '82 flamejob)
-
1)Bob Hurricane Hannah
2)Roger Decoster
and last but not least
3)Joe Bolger http://www.motorcyclemuseum.org/halloffame/hofbiopage.asp?id=312 (http://www.motorcyclemuseum.org/halloffame/hofbiopage.asp?id=312)
I'm friends with Joe's daughter Darcy, and when visiting a few years ago he gave us a tour of his workshop (incredible) and a ride in the 1917 Pierce Arrow he restored (even more incredible). Besides being a hall of famer, he's a mechanical genius and inventor, and is a big part of motocross history.

Pomeroy
Hannah
Shoot, this is tough. How far back are we going? I suppose if Chandler qualifies you gotta admire a 3rd string unqualified guy arriving on the scene and owning everyone like he did at the des nations.

I haven't been in the game too long...
Guy Cooper -- one of the first few guys recognized for doing 'whips'. I remember reading the how-to's and about how he'd get the bike so cranked over he at times wouldn't get it back - I was blown away by that stuff... it's probably tame today.
Doug Henry -- he was somewhat local to me.
Scott Summers -- Rode woods on an XR600R. Saw that pic of him holding the bike up in the air in front of himself - not sure if it was real or not. My first bike was an XR100, so I looked up to him. http://justxr.com/jh_info/ssummers.html (http://justxr.com/jh_info/ssummers.html)

I'm not sure if its quite old skool or not, but
Ezra Lusk
Kevin Windham
Jeremy Mcgrath
What's awesome is windham still rides.....and is still very competetive. I know we would all love to see Ricky come back and stomp it on a 2stroke. I feel young in comparison to some of you guys....I'm still a little shocked about cigarette sponsorships when I was young. The world of MX has changed quite a bit....worst part about it is the sound:/

These are three old school riders:
Bob Armstrong - 1920s Hill climb champ
(http://www.motorcyclemuseum.org/halloffame/hofimages/Armstrong1.jpg)
Roy Artley - One of the earliest motorcycle racters from 1910s to 1920s, most famous for City to City record runs.
Sam Arena Sr. - Top motorcycle racer from 1930s to 1950s in dirt track, road racing, speedway and hillclimbing.
Are these old school enough for ya?
-
The 3 that had the earliest impact on me:
1. Malcolm Smith
2. Morris Norman
3. JN Roberts
My three favorite MX'ers as a kid:
1. Marty Smith
2. Lackey
3. Mikkola
Biggest Heros today?
1. Malcolm
2. Fredette
3. DeCoster
I remember a story about Decoster as a manager of Team Suzuki from Chicken. Chicken and two other Suzuki pros (don't remember who now) were doing laps on the test track. Roger wasn't happy with their performance. They blamed the bike. He got on it and turned faster laps than the young pros. No warm up. No preparation. That's Roger.
