Title: Scariest bikes you've ever ridden.
Post by: jtomasik on September 30, 2010, 10:35:18 AM
1.  My old RM-465 (1981).  Had it back in the 1980's.  Powerband of a 125.  Power of an open-class 2-stroke.  4 gears, only 1 of which was in any way usable (3rd).  Suspension of a crappy go-cart.  Weird thing is, I never stopped trying to go fast on it.  The one and only place it would ever do "ok" was in sand washes.  Heck, the old Alsport-Steen (anyone remember those?) had a leg up on that old 465!

2.  XR600R.  Not positive what year.  It was a friend's of mine.  Musta been late 80's/early 90's???  Did a dual sport ride with him, and I didn't have a dual purpose bike (was visiting my old stomping grounds in Cali and only had my full-dirt bike with me).  We rode out of his house in Hesperia, down some streets, and the first thing we did when we got off the streets was ride in to a whooped out sand wash.  Now, I'm really at-home in the sand, and especially in those sections.  But, that bike was NOT.  The front end weighed like my F-250 (truck).  It immediately dove into the first whoop and tried to stay there.  Not enough power to get that pig to get its front end to float.  I tried everything I could think of to get it to ride half-decent in those whoops.  Nothing worked.  Check that...riding somewhere other than in sand/whoops corrected it!

How 'bout you guys?

I owned a '85 CR500 once.  It maybe why my shoulders when rotated sound like gravel moving around in there.  Felt like it would pull your arms off.

I vaguely remember fast woods trails as just a blur. :)

Would have to be my Suzuki RMX 250. That bike had headshake like nothing else I've ever ridden. :o

My CBR1000RR, I would look down at the speedometer and could not believe I was dumb enough to go that fast on the street.

It was fun though :D

1) 82 RM250 when i was 14. The rear mudguard did not last long. :-[

2) Moto-Guzzi 850 LeMans from London to Silverstone. Evil shaft drive that would stand the bike up straight if you lifted off the throttle while cornering. You had to do all your braking before the corner then gently wind on the power thru the corner. >:D

The scarest bike I ever rode was a YZ426F, because it scared me that no more big bore 2 strokes were being produced.  Of course there is Maico and that eased my fears.

The scariest bike I've ever ridden, by FAR, is the 1982 Husqvarna 250CR.  That is, as many of you know, my primary bike at this time.  Now, I don't have much experience with "normal" 125s, so I'm reluctant to say it's got a 125 powerband, but I will say that it feels like it has less low-end than the '67 120, and very roughly the top-end of the 390 Husky (until sixth gear, that is).  But the funny thing is, there's nothing whatsoever between the two.  Roll it on at low revs and there's almost nothing to speak of, and this continues until a certain RPM.  For all I know, that RPM is 6418, but it really is that specific.  As soon as you reach that precise point, it cuts loose and unleashes the Dogs of War.  If you watch some of my riding videos, you can clearly hear this at work, the bike goes "brrrrWAH, brrrrWAH" as you shift through the gears.  Of course, that's a short-shift, if you want to, you can keep it in Blitzkrieg mode but you're apt to run out of space really quick.

And that brings me to the next little problem.  The brakes.  They don't work.  I'm guessing at this point that the peanut gallery is thinking, "Of course they don't work, they're old drums!"  Let's put it this way, comparing the drums on the 390 to those on the [newer] 250, is like comparing the brakes of an F1 car, to a gentle tug on the reins of a horse in the wild west.  It's going to take a while.  The front brake allows you to pull the lever all the way to the grip, without locking the front wheel.  The rear brake will lock gladly, but it won't slow the bike.  To give it the benefit of the doubt, however, the rear drum is located right next to the shocks, which means that it's constantly bathed in oil.

Ah yes, the shocks.  The dual Ohlins found on the Husky are supposed to have three main components: the spring, shock absorber, and reservoir.  The springs work fine, obviously.  I mean, how in the hell do you mess that up?  The shock absorber, for some reason that we are trying to determine, leaks oil so badly, that after five minutes of hard riding, all dampening is completely gone, and oil can be seen dripping from everything rear of the swingarm pivot.  Including the brake.  And there is quite a lot of oil indeed to be lost, because each shock has a reservoir with over 100PSI of air pushing oil into the shock so that it can be blasted out all over everything.

All this combines to make a bike that likes to explode forward in great bursts of insanity, spin the rear wheel up to jet-engine-like speeds as it hops over every bump and groove in the dirt, and then take about sixteen miles to haul down to a stop.  But, once the shocks get fixed (which they will be by the time the next season starts) the bike should be a thing of greatness.  I question whether the brakes will ever be considered good anytime this decade, but I can live with that.  It'd be horrible for racing, but I don't do racing, so I've usually got plenty of room to stop.  And the engine, while kind of weird to get used to, is actually great.  It allows you to cruise around with the most mild, easy-to-control power on the face of the planet, OR take off at a million miles an hour and keep up with a bike half-again its size.  It performs both functions well, you just have to know which one you're looking for.  And that's why I completely fell in love with the big yellow axe-murderer the last time I rode it.

To hear the weird powerband in action, fast-forward to the 5:30 mark in the following video.

Riding a 501 at age 12, holy balls!  That would be like trying to wrestle a Tyrannosaurus to the ground with your bare hands.  Or your bear hands, if you happen to be a bear.  Either way, it's not going to turn out well.

The plan was hatched in the back of my highschool English class, we would take my friend's 1974 1/2 Maico MC450 (oh to have that bike now!), insert it in the back of his Mustang car and go race a local cross country event.I was to be the pilot and pre-race preparation amounted to oiling the chain. 1st gear on that old Maico was good for 50 mph and those early races were tight and twisty, with a million log crossings. What I quickly discovered was that some previous owner had welded angle iron to the bottom of the downswept expansion chamber and if I didn't plan a log crossing just right the leading edge of that reinforcing angle would dig in and launch me over the bars in a manner fit for an Olympic box vaulter.

Then, after having extracted myself from whatever bush I landed in, I would have to run back to the Maico and right it before the bike flooded. Now the previous owner, in his Mensa class wisdom, had also removed the decompressor and with points ignition starting the bike was like trying to subdue a 230 pound rattlesnake.

They eventually found me wandering hysterically in the bush, covered head to toe in scratches and bruises.

Complete vindication came at the next race, in the form of a shiny red, ISDT bred, Hercules GS250 7 speed. I miss that bike. :D

The 1st time I swung a leg over my new 1974 Honda Elsinore CR250M... I was 12.. I had to change my drawers...  I wanted a 125, but there was a 30 day waiting period, and the 250 was sitting on the floor...  The 1st time I really twisted the throttle....  holy shiiiiittttt....  how do you keep the front wheel down.  That bike was so much fun...

1975 RM400...  I thought my 250 had a loty of power...  The RM had power everywhere, and it just kept on coming...  but you'd better be wearing a good set of boots when you tried to kick that big boy over...lots of compression and a lot of kick back.

My mates 85 CR 250 with no rear brakes, first time on a moto x track, 16 years old and brimming with confidence. After about 3 laps i wasnt so confident and was definately riding alot slower than the first couple of laps, its amazing how hard you will pull on the front brake when your rocketing towards a corner wondering, "how the hell am i gonna stop this bloody thing??!!!"

Was tons of fun when the brake got fixed though.........and not so scary..

I bought an 85 CR500 from a local pro who ported it himself in his garage. Holy $h1t. Super fast and kind of unridable. There was a sandy pit riding area that had a deep inverted cone of a hole that guys on 250's were spinning and crawling their way up. I could jump about 20' coming out. The guy I bought it from could have gone much higher. Finding traction is where the problems started. Scary-Yes, fun-YES.

Scariest bike, or scariest two stroke?

Scariest bike was a 1960something BSA. Practically no brakes, throttle would stick at will, it would stall at will, only bike I've ever ridden and thought "That was NO fun at all."

Scariest two stroke was a 1995 CR500 I rode on a WV trail ride. The bike Eric Gorr engine mods & pro action suspension. More times than once I thought I was going over a cliff because the power was too brutal and uncontrollable. I like to ride fast off-road and that was way too much bike for this part of the country. Cured me on ever wanting a big bore for the tight eastern woods.

Yesterday evening I went for my first real ride on my Maico 500 since my accident three years ago and something really strange (and scary) happened to me! The sun was getting close to the horizon and it was getting hard to see with the sunlight filtering in thru the trees directly into my eyes. I went around a corner and down thru a brushy section when I realized " H*ly sh*t there's a BIG black bear coming right at me!". At the last possible moment the bear veered of the trail and tried to climb a tree (it was too fat). I stopped and looked back at the bear trying to figure out if it was a mother with cubs. I could tell by the look in the bear's eyes it wasn't too happy to see me! Just glad I wasn't on my mountain bike! :o

Maico 500s are actually a pleasure to ride in the tight stuff as the power is so smooth and with incredible torque you can take lines you can't take with the smaller bores. The problem I find is in braking - you have to slow down those big flywheels.

Whats happening here in Western Canada is that because of various environmental policies black bear numbers are increasing and it seems, to a certain extant, they are also losing their fear of mankind. I always watch the bear in an encounter like this to make sure no cubs are involved. I'm not sure if the bear was charging me but that Maico coming right at it scared it away.

I bought my 500 new in 1995 and I enjoy riding it as much now as when I first got it.

In 2004 I was tuning up a 1973 CZ125 (cost - 1 case of beer) and I was in a steep walled, flat canyon. As I revved the bike I was watching the exhaust and out of the corners of my eyes I could see the rock walls to guide me. Imagine my surprise when I turned around only to see a black bear running for it's dear life in front of me!

When I was 16 I had an 82 RM250 without brakes. That was scary.

Without little to none engine braking, + the power of a 250 2-stroke + the tempting to go fast, especially at a young age + no brakes

= Six flags rides with a warning of that there will be a chance that the bar thing will go off and release you from the seat.

Now with a power of a CR500

= Suicide run.

Now I'm curious, do you mean the RM literally had no brake drums, or that the brakes simply worked extremely poorly?  I've found that people often claim to have no brakes, and then I ride their bike and find out it stops better than mine does (Opferman's '83 Maico being a case in point.)

The sad part is,once you get older you start thinking back-and also about some you passed up that you wouldn't pass up now.Oh well, most from the good old days that I've met up with in recent years ended up being fat-that's at least a little consolation. ;D
As for bears, blacks are one thing.I don't think I'd be too enthused about meeting a grizzly-especially when riding a machine that's likely to leave me motoring for out on foot :D ;)

High school reunions can be a very scary thing. Some classmates still look 18 and others could be their parents. :o

Once I was out on a vintage Ossa exploring a potential mountain bike area when I came across a huge Grizzly stocking a young deer fawn. The fawn took off at about 90 mph and I found myself staring at a Grizzly about the size of one of those Alaskan Browns that you see in the wildlife videos chasing salmon. The bear stared at me for a moment and then casually turned around and wandered up the hill.To think I was in that same mountain plateau area the previous weekend stumbling around on my mountain bike in a dense fog!

I used to live in Kodiak, AK and had quite a few encounters with Brown Bears. The most memorable was on a hunting trip with a buddy from work and we were on our way back from a successful deer hunt. We came to a river crossing and he slammed on his brakes, I very nearly missed his quad and almost ran into a deep pool in the river. After a near miss and looking back at my buddy, I noticed he was scrambling to get his quad in reverse and turn around, I then turned to see two Brown Bruins staring me down at 40 yards. I thought it was awesome as they were just fishing and did not seem to care we were there.  After we calmed down, we turned off our quads to just watch and take pictures. I started to get my camera out of my pack, then I realized we had a little less than two hundred pounds of deer meat on our quads. The bears seemed not to notice the smell of the meat as there were fish half eaten all over the bank of the river. After we had been there for about 5 min they started pacing towards us, my buddy Brian was white as a ghost and scrambling to get his quad turned around again. I decided that taking their picture was not a wise choice and started my quad to get across the river and away from the brown monsters pacing towards me. As I was crossing the river, I did not choose that best path, and the water was already up to my knees. It got so deep that my quad actually started floating, thank God I had such monster mud tires on that quad, I actually floated down stream and across to the other side of the river, I was able to crawl up the bank and get back on the trail. By this point the bears had stopped their pursuit and began fishing again. After we got back on the trail, we statred laughing about how close we came to being mauled by Brown Bears, and the fact that we smelled like blood and guts! Whew, what a rush! Those Bears are much larger in person than on TV. The two bears were young males, probably about three to four years old, they were not yet full grown adults and still they had to be near 9 ft tall each! I had encounters with Black Bear On the mainland in AK and didn't even flinch, they seem like dogs to me now after encountering The Big Brownies! That was probably the only time I'm glad was on a quad and not my Bike!

That's actually pretty common, I personally MEDEVACed a hunter who had been attacked by a Brown bear while cleaning a deer, he was hunting by himself! Go figure! Another guy I worked with had to pick up and bag the remains of a kayaker in Prince William Sound who died of hypothermia and the bears ate the rest of him. However, Brown bears are typically proving dominance and not hunting or trying to eat people. The Man eaters that have been caught or shot and had an autopsy done, all had something wrong with their brains, but that's not to say some of them aren't just hungry! I never got used to run-in's with those bears, it was always kinda scary!

Man, I am just all the more reluctant to let other people ride one of my bikes.  The 250 is so pathetic on bottom-end and has such a high first that I think a simple stall is much more likely, but the 120 is geared like a winch and with an adult-size rider the front comes up really easy.  And if that bike were to fall on its right side, ruining that preposterously-rare pipe... Bloody hell.

For me it was my old 87 KX 500.  It was a former ice racing bike and had a few high performance mods... Trying to keep the front end down was a bit of a chore.  As well as keeping rear tires on it.   ;D It would just chunk tires up, no normal wear, just knobs missing.

The second bike I ever rode in my life was a bran new 1993 YZ250 and it was on a mx track. I dont know who was more scared, me or my buddy who owned it. Luckily I already knew all about wiskey throttle so I was very careful.

The fastest 2 stroke Ive ever rode was a 2003 RM 250 built by Williams Performance. It was Ross Martins (pro snow mobile racer) personal bike.

The fastest 4 stroke Ive ever rode was a built 2008 KTM 505. Seriously almost killed myself in the whoops on this one.

The fastest bike Ive ever rode was probably a built 2003 GSXR 1k

A brand new 84 Kawasaki KXT250 Tecate three wheeler at about 12 or 13 years old - I made it about 100 yards, when I suddenly without warning removed the seat, fenders, grab rail, silencer and a good portion of the sub-frame... and I've been hooked on 2-Strokes ever since (currenty have 2 Tecate's and a fleet of smokers including Husqvarna, Yamaha & ATK)

Scariest would be my '86 CR500R. Here she is with just a few more things to take care of before the rebuild is done. It's not the most powerful bike I've ridden (when you include the street bikes I've ridden), but it's the delivery of the power it has that makes it so hairy.

Scariest bike I've ridden was my 08 GSXR1000. That damn thing was ridiculous...scared the crap outta me. It begged to be ridden hard. I made some bad decisions on that bike. 176mph was a huge rush but made me decide to get rid of it...way too easy to go fast.

Scariest dirtbike was a 05 CRF450 that my buddy dirttracks. No front brake and a barely there rear brake on a bike that's geared for a mile track being ridden on a short track is definitely scary! I'm used to my RM's brakes, which are super sensitive, the way I like them!

Thank you! I installed the correct blue fork boots this past weekend. A few more small items to go and the restoration is done. Only problem is it's too nice to ride now! :D

250cc bike, with a turbo the size of a watermelon.  That'd do it.

Ok,here we go....
Back around my late 20's/early thirties I was still riding street. One day, having thrown the RZ into a ditch,I decided to follow it in and buggered up my back.It was nothing serious but anyone who has ever pulled all the muscles in their back can attest to what it feels like.I could lay down, partially stand up, but sitting was excruciating.
The next day the wife screwed off shopping with one of her hen friends, leaving me laying there staring at the ceiling.Naturally,at this point,a friend calls and asks if I want to go dirt riding. When I explained the situation to him he said-cripes,when did you become such a damn pussy?Naturally,in those days, that was all I needed to hear so I crab walked out to the truck and headed out to his place-sitting sort of sideways in the seat.
Once I got there,he had to help me on the bike-an old xl250(he was riding his TT500)
After I figured out the starting drill(choke part on,half throttle, hold your head just the right way)and tested the controls-good lever pressure and all that-off we went.
We were following an old rail bed and when we got to the first stop where it crossed a road I hit both brakes and had absolutely nothing.Madly gearing down and dragging my feet I cruised across the road and coasted to a stop farther down.Riding up alongside he says-oh yeah, which reminds me,it's got no brakes.
Anyway, once on the bike my back didn't feel too bad(unless I hit bump, then the empty shocks would send a "pleasant" jolt up my spine) so we spent most of the day cruising around. This ride was largely responsible for my transition to dirt a year later.
On the way back,I was cruising along behind him keeping a decent distance when we got to a part of the rail bed that had about a 10' drop on either side.
At this point, his rear wheel locks solid(his swingarm nut had fallen off and the shaft worked it's way out until the whole back end twisted sideways, locking the rear brake) and he starts slewing all over the trail such that I had to guess at which side to go.
Dragging my feet of course,I motored by on the left just as he slewed to the right.
We eventually got the shaft back in and he held it in with he heel as we headed back to his place.
On the way home, slurping an XL of Tim Horton's finest halved with a bottle of tylenol, the pain was so intense I was absolutely beside myself.
Regardless of this,I was thinking-well,if nothing else, here I was, layed up in bed,and yet still managed to go riding in the dirt with an old clapped out bike with no brakes-my(relatively new to me at the time) wife should be quite impressed with my studliness-you would think that anyway.
Instead, I got home and got out of the truck and stumbled toward the house bent at about a 90 degree angle where she was waiting on the step-no doubt anxious to hear of my manly exploits.
Instead,I got called a moronic, freakin' idiot and was drug down to the bedroom and pitched on the bed face down while she exited slamming the door behind her.
So,my first real dirt ride on a pos bike coupled with the sudden realization that the honeymoon was over makes the scariest bike I'd ever ridden the XL250.Nothing else even comes close. :(

I hate to sound like a powder puff, but my '00 RM250 is probably the scariest bike I've ridden.  Or at least the one that scares me most often.  Power wheelies in any gear would be all the power I need to have fun.

For reference, I used to have a Yamaha R1 sportbike.. 125hp at the wheel, 420lbs wet, yadda yadda.  It didn't have any character.. it was just an appliance.  It was only fun on the track of if you were riding way too fast for the street.

If I think about it, another scary bike that comes to mind - my dads pre-evo Harley Sportster 1000.  It sounds like it's going to grenade at any minute.  One jug is down just in front and below the seat...... so It's a little intimidating.  Wooden brakes - a hinge somewhere in the frame that you feel around corners or over bumps. 3 speed with a tall overdrive 4th.  Yeah, it scares me!  But it's got loads of character.  Cant say that for the R1.

Character is important in a bike.  By the numbers, my 120 is a pretty inferior machine to just about anything you want to compare it to, but it's got so much character that it's more fun to ride than my Husky.  You just expect so little out of it, and then right about the time you feel a wave of torque in second gear, and get an unexpected wheelie from the downright stupid weight balance, you fall in love.  I don't know if anyone else would connect with it the way I do, but it's wonderful.

And, in keeping with the theme of this thread, it can also be a little bit scary because it can put itself into a terrain + speed combination that the structure of the bike simply can't take.  We're all used to bikes that you can ride as fast as you possibly dare, and so long as you don't crash, they're good to go faster.  Anything with long-travel suspension will basically do that.  Not this one.  Take the 120 at maximum attack mode over something scarier than a dirt road, and there's a good chance something's going to disintegrate - probably the poor shocks.

Definitely, CZ 500, an old Chezh dirtbike. With a bore of 500 cc and the torque enough for a small truck, it can squeeze some shit outta anyone. Maybe, i didn't have enough balls, of course...
So, i first rode it in winter 2011 in our bike club. It had metal spikes and was heavy as hell... But it started at once! (After my 1999 cr 250 with HUGE compression, i can start anything)
When a fellow said it's actually faster than Vasylich's XR 650 R i just laughed. But when i rode it all across small streets of the city (in winter!) and returned about to shit my pants, my opinion slightly changed.
The second attempt was in a muddy, snowy road, the spring had just started... Guys said me - go and check that road... I rushed from the start, and after riding about 150m, on the very first, wet, icy turn i crashed it on the side and broke the shifter... :((
Pity.
