Here is a copy of the email I am preparing for a reply to AMA Technical Director Al Ludington about adding the 144cc to the 250 class. Please review it and let me know what should be added or taken away to this proposed rule change. thanks
Hey Al,
Thanks for getting back with me.
I am currently working with several groups who wish to inquire with the AMA about re-opening discussions and examining a change to Section 3.1 (a)&(b) of the AMA Pro Racing Rulebook, specifically changing from:
a. 250 Motocross Class: 0 â?? 125cc 2-Stroke / 150 â?? 250cc 4-stroke
b. 450 Motocross Class: 150 â?? 250cc 2-Stroke / 251 â?? 450cc 4-stroke
changing to:
a. 250 Motocross Class: 0 â?? 144cc 2-Stroke / 151 â?? 250cc 4-stroke
b. 450 Motocross Class: 150 â?? 250cc 2-Stroke / 251 â?? 450cc 4-stroke
I realize this was discussed and decided on in October of 2005, but since that time much development and insight has been gained into both engine types. There are many benefits to allowing this change, however I don't wish to lose the importance of presenting it without all the facts put forth, if this is agreeable to you.
Thanks for your time and consideration,
Mark Slate

Equal Displacement NOW! >:D

While your writing, might I suggest adding 50cc to the 250cc two-stroke, bring it up to 300cc??
This will probably be a bit of back and forth before he even agrees to consider it.
One of the reasons will be because no one builds machines in these displacements, which of course is not true.
KTM builds a 150 and a 300cc MX Bike (well the 300 could be an mx bike really easily) TM Racing builds a 144 and 300 cc MX bike. Gas Gas builds a 300cc bike. Almost any Japanese bike can be modified to achieve this displacement.
Of course you could mention (in follow up letters) that we could circulate a petition if they'd like. Or we could even host a survey.
I would also suggest getting in touch with Rupert X... he had a "manifesto" that described what you are attempting to achieve with your rule change. It's worthwhile reading to anyone interested in the sport of motocross!

Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.

Yeah, I was wondering if I should propose 300cc on the 450 class. Good change. Hopefully he will write back.

I like your letter and the changes John suggested. Let us know however he responds, I think it will be interesting.

Lets hope so, I know it doesnt affect me as we have the rule for the lites clas changed here in OZ but if the rules can be changed to allow a larger displacement 2t then hopefully it could catch on here and that is only gonna benefit us all.

hahaha Al Ludington oh god :( This is AMA for you!

Unfortunately that is a very common attitude in professional racing. If you aren't one of the top guys some feel you shouldn't even be out there. Heck is only the top 3-5 guys rode, it would be pretty damn boring to watch in my opinion.
-
This is how AMA treat their privateers!!! AMA ROAD RACING is almost dead anyways..
-
Is there anyone else to talk to? Man, hopefully we can at least get this considered.

Wow, that RupertX article was pretty amazing! I have never seen it laid out so plain and simple.

Rupert X is a very cool guy.... I really like him.
The plan that he created was a masterpiece. Unfortunately I think it ended up causing him some difficulties.
His plan needs to be implemented!!

maybe it's my personality, but i would have a VERY hard time writing a letter to the AMA without ridiculing the rules. Yes cooler heads prevail, but the rules are so unfair that it's hard not to be totally honest and call it for what it is. I'd rather shame them into changing the rules than anything. Forget that it's just an engine, it's the PRINCIPLE of the whole thing. I mean people who set rules are supposed to be fair and just. Fucking rule really sticks in my craw

Yep, definitely a good read.

I support this 110%.

Same here. And if someone develops a one-stroke internal-combustion engine that's got more power and less weight than a two-stroke, I say let the one- two- and four-strokes still race 250 v 250 v 250. If that means these new one-strokes come in and wipe out all the two-strokes, they will have genuinely earned it. May the best engine win. It makes no sense to have displacement handicaps at all! All they're doing is trying to put them on an equal footing for power. Well shit, if you're going to do that, just say "no more than X horsepower." It's the same thing they're doing now, except that way they'd actually be honest about their intentions.

While this is the way I had handled it in the beginning, I have found that I gain much more ground when I back it off a notch (well sometimes 3 or 4 notches! :P :P )
burn1986 BCC'd me on the letters he sent to the AMA and the manufacturers that do make two-strokes. He is certainly a much better politician that I am!! The way he wrote them was brilliant.
The difference between what he wrote and what I have written in the past is immense. My illusion is that burn1986 will start a conversation, were as my stuff was probably deleted before they got two paragraphs into it.
Which way do you think will help the cause more???

Wow, thanks for the kudos! Hopefully, we'll see some headway and wedge ourselves in.

Called and left a message today with him. Hopefully he will reply back.
