Title: How do you ride across/on water?
Post by: fabbo on June 26, 2010, 01:19:48 AM
Hi guys

Has any anyone of you guys ridden a bike across water I mean ride over it like a boat I have been riding for over 25 yrs and I would like to one day ride across water any hints as to what is best, is it a dam, lake what about the ground any info would be appreciated then I would hopefully find similar sites here in Australia. I don't care if I fall off,ill make sure I can walk across it first and is shallow water (max 4ft deep or so). I have seen it on utube looks amazing. any suggestions would be appreciated.  I have a 2001 yz 250

Thanks guys

If I do do it I will post it on TSM

It's all in the genes.  If your dad happens to have created the universe, you should be good to go.

Hit it fast as possible, and lean back

Once a group of us came across a shallow pond about a 100 meters across and 30 - 45 cm deep. The pond was surrounded by a flat field and the transition into and out of the water was almost perfectly flat with a very soft muddy bottom. We took care to make sure we weren't disturbing any frogs, fish, semi aquatic Kiwi's etc.

I was hitting the water in 4th gear at about 80 KM (Maico 500).A friend also easily made it across on a Honda CR500, the guys on the 250's had to be a little more careful and a rider on a Honda CR125 made it about 3/4 the way across before he sunk.

Its all about smooth entrance and exit, and hitting it wide open, I did it once a long time ago probably about 100-150 foot long pond dont know how deep, but did it several times, it was cool.

Basically, give her lot's of gas, and lean back, and don't do it with a four stroke, my friend, on his rm125 can skip water like none other, but my other friend on his RMZ-250 sinks right away, i think you just need a lot of speed, which the four stroke does not seem to have.

I think the four-stroke's problem is that it's like a boat made of depleted uranium.  Too much weight.  And if you let off of the throttle on one of those things, hell.  The last thing you need "on the water" is lots of engine braking.
