This project can turn into a mess without a lot of planning, a thorough knowledge of
year over year parts changes, some basic fabrication and suspension set up skills and
a bag of money.

Some things will fit.  The engine swap can be done with some fabrication.  The front
suspension will bolt up without problem.  Same goes for the controls, handlebars,
footpegs, front brake system, rear brake pedal and front and rear wheels.

Some things will not fit.  None of the plastic (including the fuel tank) will fit except for the
front fender and fork guards.  You will have to use the cooling system from the '02 and
find some radiator hoses that will fit.  You will need an '02 seat and airbox.  The rear
shock clevis will need to be changed to work with an '02 linkage and swingarm.  You will
need an '02 rear brake system and finally, you will have to modify a '97 pipe and silencer
to fit the '02 frame and subframe.

It's ashame you don't have a complete '02 that you could bolt the superior '97 engine in
and go.

Good luck with it.

The 1997 is piston port whereas the 2002 is first year case reed and electronic powervalve (totally different motor). What broke on the 97 frame?
