Title: raced a 2 stroke only open class this weekend!!!!
Post by: westsiderippa on May 18, 2010, 08:21:14 PM
well i had a local +30 OTHG event this weekend at the Hollister GP track. for those of you not from the cali bay area. hollister is a great old school motocross track. any way we had a great day of racing, we did a 3 moto format and im pleased to say i won my class, +30 INT on my YZ250 against a bunch of pigs. i went 1, 2, 1 for the overall. WOOHOO!!!! so here's the kicker, the promoter put on a 2 stroke only open class. it was so bad a--. we had about 14 guys and we all lined up and went for it. it was the highlight of the day. i took 3rd overall behind a couple of 30 EXp riders. here is a helmet cam video taken buy the guy that won the event. im the guy on the yz you will see to the right off the start then i tried a pass on lap one and got the door closed on me and i kinda fell back and paced the 2 leaders, they were pretty fast so i just didnt have enough to make another move. but i held my own and came in right behind them for a strong 3. i guess we checked out on the rest of the pack. it was so fun!!!

Awesome video. I used to ride out at Hollister Hills in the 70's

and for the most part its still the same. the steep hill is out now though. we will run it sometimes on special events.

there was a guy there on a TM250, i was lined up next to him in one of my moto's and got to talking to him. i thought he said it was 2010? his bike had a cali green sticker, if you dont know what that is just look it up its another BS cali law, and he said it was because his bike was the first in cali so they did not know how to register it because it should be a red sticker bike. anyway it was a nice machine and sounded great.

Cool Track. ;D
I like the old type tracks.
Nice and flowing and you actually spend time on the ground accelerating instead of being in the air all the time. :P

Good video, very clear.  Great job racing, congrats.  I liked the track. More my style now a days.  less jumps and lots of just racing, terrain and sorts.  Looks good.

Congratulations on your impressive finishes!!

Did you have fun?? That's all that matters in the long run.

I know at the beginning of the year you were a little concerned about giving up some displacement to the four-strokes, how do you feel about it now?

Looks like a really fun track.

yah, the guy that took the video always seems to have his helmet cam on and does a good job. im not sure what camera it is but i think its a gopro. i think that will be my next toy!!! he runs the 38 exp class and said that he had not been on a 2stroke since 1989, haha, he is a natural rider though when you watch him.

as far as my concerns go with displacement, i still cant give a clear answer on that. i mean most importantly im having FUN FUn FUn, more fun than i have ever had on my 450's. im winning races and i am faster now than i ever was on the 450. my transponder lap times are cutting down by seconds at most tracks i race on. you might ask how? well i feel its do to not riding like a lazy sloth any more on the 450. now that i am actually riding the bike, using the clutch, shifting gears, using throttle control etc... i feel that my skills are developing 10 fold what they were on a 4t. i find myself riding the track now, not just following the same BS inside drift wide 4t race line. all in all i ride a mix of sx and mx style tracks and i do have to ring that yz hard in the loamy sandy tracks but its just so fun. im yet to get a hole shot, in fact im usally about mid pack off the gate, sometimes to the front or sometimes dead last, haha, but it doesnt stop me one bit. i just put my head down after the first corner and start picking them off 1 by 1.

so let me talk about maint. and money, i got my yz toward the beginning of the year and i just put a new top end and clutch n her. im under 400 bucks and that includes freshening up all my suspension fluids etc.. this time last year i had a new crf450 same time frame same amount of hrs and races and i was over a grand for the same maint. WHY? because of the gosh darn valves, thats why. and the fact that i cant do that shit myself.

here is another one for you. my crf from last year took over an extra grand in suspension to get it to work for me. do to very poor valving etc... my yz i rode for 2 months bone stock and just changed the springs recently  to stiffen it up a little but other wise it works great.

Nice video and congratulations on a good day at the track. And that's my kinda track. Reminds me of Antietam and Budds Creek way back before everything became "extreme" and jumping meant carrying enough speed over the hill. Yep I'm a geezer and I miss those tracks.

Ya know... you may not have near as much trouble as you think in the sand!

Two strokes are lighter and get "on top" of the sand much easier than the four-stroke. This works really well on whoops as well, the two-stroke skips over the top, the four-strokes kind of "dig down" through the whoops and the engine braking is brutal on the fours...

Keep you momentum up on the YZ and you will have an absolute blast! You may even surprise yourself as to how well you finish.

Please keep us up-to-date on your day!

very true about that john. i have been riding a lot of sand lately but i have not raced the yz in the sand yet. i can confirm that the 2t is so much more fun and easy to manage in the sand for the reasons you stated. the main reason being the lack of engine braking really keeps the front up in the corners and you dont get the 4t push/washout effect. im looking forward to fernley it is such an awsome track, just wide open desert sand and huge natural woops and giant tables. its such a fast track. its going to be a 2 day event so its a lot of racing. im stoked because this is round 2 of our national series. the first was hangtown. after this we go to tulare then hollister and wrap it up at glen hellen. i will keep everyone up to date and i hope to have a new go pro to get some video. i was thinking of aiming it backwards during a moto so i could record all the roost im gonna through at the rest of the conga line, hahaha!!!!!
