Title: 2 Stroke privateer
Post by: TMKIWI on May 06, 2010, 09:07:32 PM
Here is a paragraph out of the latest Dirt Rider Downunder.
It brought a smile to my face.
This was the first round of the Aussie Nationals MX2 class.

Darryll King (YZ250)must be sick of people talking about his age,as that was all you heard through the commentary when his name was mentioned.
After race one I thought that this is not the same guy I saw race at the Auckland Champs, with his performance looking average in comparison.
I caught up with him after the race in his little pop-up tent, all on his own, with his bike stripped down and discovered it was a faulty power valve that was to blame for the lacklustre ride.
Once sorted, it was back to the Darryll we're used to seeing, attacking at the pointy end of the field and taking second place in the final moto.
The irony wasn't lost on the crowds watching him work on his own bike between races, as Darryll was pitted next to the CDR Race Team(Yamaha Factory backed 250F) whom he used to ride for and has taken titles with.
Yet even though he's now in his pop-up tent with no mechanic and working on his own bike he's still dominating.

Forgot.
Here's a picture of Darryll earlier in the year.

Yeah, How good is it. I will be heading to the fourth round of the nationals in Toowoomba next week and I will be cheering him on. Great to see. Man didnt know he was doing it with no mechanic. If he needs a hand I will be the first one to put up my hand. Hopefully will see a few more smokers out there for the Toowoomba national. Cant wait. Go Darryl !!!!!!!!!

Yeah that was Kim Ashkenazi. He hasnt ridden a round yet which is very unfortunate cos I was looking for him to do great things. He was a victim of circumstance and the way the entries were set up, it was first in best dressed and unfortunately he wasn't in the first entries received and has been a reserve rider. This has caused much conjecture, and many arguments resulted arguing that there should be timed qualifying for all entered and then the top 40 qualifiers then race. He was set to race the third round of the nationals but the round wasn't run due to the tragic accident that occured in practice. He should be racing in the fourth round next weekend and I expect to see him up the front. Go "Ashcan" !!!!!!!

Wasnt Cam Taylor riding an RM 250 aswell? according to ADB he was, didnt say how he went but.
Good to see DK out there flyin the flag for the 2 strokes, hes a legend. ;D

Yeah Cam Taylor was out there on a two stroke, but not on an RM. He was riding a YZ 250 also, and did well in a few motos. He finished as high as 5th in one moto, but has had a few other bad results and DNF's. I dont think Cam is riding all the rounds either, only the southern rounds.

I'm surprised there aren't more 250 2 stroke riders in the 250 class. Maybe it'll take a lil bit to catch on.

The lap times of the 2t and 4stroke bikes is about the same, that's why they let them run together.
Don't get me wrong i'm a 2t fan through and through but the 2stroke 250 doesn't have the massive advantage over 250f's that some of you seem to think. Often the lites bikes are lapping faster than the 450's.
It's not necessarily about sheer HP it's about delivery.

Well said. I think riders just need to get used to 2-strokes again. After riding 4s for so long you need to get that throttle and clutch hand trained again

Yep, spot on. i believe the necessary skill level to go fast dropped with the rise of the 4strokes.
I've ridden a few late model 250f's and yeah fast and smooth and easy to put down consistent laps, but they boring as hell compared to a 250 2t and for me it's all about the fun factor.

I agree with all that BUT, on the weekend at our club day on of the vets who races a rm 250 and is usually a top 5 finisher fronted up on a early 90's kx500 and absolutley abliterated every 450 out there, the track is axle deep whooped out sand and flat out HP won on the day.
It was one of those moments where all the juinors lined the fences going, "who is he, and WTF is that bike he's riding"

I think the problem is for someone to qualify it has to be done on a 250f at local or state level, so no ones going to drop the bike they have prepared on for a bike they are unfarmiliar with for a nationl title. Until riders can race and prepare 250 2t's in the lites at local events, I don't think you will see many at the nationals.
Kingy will go a long way to convincing people though.

Evo550: Aussie has 250=250 so you can turn up with what you like.
The only way a privateer can compete with the factory backed boys on their $30k 250F's is on a 2 stroke.
Or a very rich daddy.

Aussie only has the 250t v 250f rule for the nationals, everywhere else they are lumped in the 450 f class.
My point is that there are only about 8 round to the nationals, so the rider can't prepare (by riding local events) in the lites class on his 250t because of the way the rule has been implimented. So they would be less inclined to ride a 250f in  preperation and then a 250t at the actual event.

In my opinion the 4-strokes have made the younger & some of the not so young MX racers a bit lazy.I know the 4-strokes are a fair amount heavier but most experienced racers know how to make the bikes work for them instead of against them, but I still believe the 4-strokes make a rider/racer a little bit on the lazy side due to less shifting, the engine braking of a 4 stroke and the different power characteristics of a 4-choke,meaning the smoother, albeit slower revving power of the engine. These guys have to get back to the basics & learn how to race the good ol' 2-strokes and learn how to shift the bikes & use the advantages of the 2-stroke bikes & quit being so damn lazy! "JUST MY OPINION"... >:(

Sorry Evo I was not aware that was the rules.
I understand what you are saying now.
Stupid idea that. I would have thought that if you were going to change the rules, you would change them at club level as well.

Yeah it is EVO. Gonna be good too. Speakin to the boys who run Echo Valley and the track sounds like it will be awesome. Have had plenty of water on the track and built up quite a few sections so should see plenty of action, and hopefully some smokers up the front. Will post up a review of the day to let you guys know how well the boys do on their 250 2 strokes in the lites class.

You would be right there Maicoman, i have just got back on a 2t 250 after having a 450 for the last couple of years and i can say they do make you lazy. Its pretty hard to start with, havin to get used to actually riding the bike, using the clutch and changin gears. Habits are hard to break but seein i have ridden 2ts more than 4s i got back in the swing of things pretty quick.

Hey TMKIWI, Sorry about the delay. I didnt end up making it out to Toowoomba on the weekend. Went riding on Saturday cos we were going to the nationals on the Sunday and I broke my leg. Pretty devastating and I am laid up for a few weeks. Have spoken to a few boys and they said the racing was real good and there was a real special tribute for Andrew McFarlane which was good. Yeah it would have been great to see Ashcan out there carving it up. That was a great result for him. Darryl King had a few solid finishes with out anything special, and Cam Taylor was up there as well. I have to wait for the last round which is at Coolum. That could be good for the guys on the two strokes being a sand track. Look for some real good results there.

Thats a bummer swapper.
I was trying to find out how many smokers there were in the results.
But all the web site says is the riders, not what bike they are on.

Just thought i would post up the results of the smoker boys.
Doesnt look like the guys are doing every round but here are the results so far.
Kim Ashkenazi : 25/5/19/8/13/12 from 2 rounds
Darryll King : 25/5/2/10/12/13/12/15/9 from 3 rounds
Cam Taylor :9/7/16/7/28/17 from 2 rounds.

Not setting the world on fire but good solid results anyway.
Being in the top dozen riders in most races is pretty good against the factory boys. :)

Yeah they have been going great. A lot of those tracks have been very favourable for the four strokes as well. Very hard pack and slick. Kim Ashkenazi started out as 1st reserve in the class and had to miss the first couple of rounds unfortunately. Darryl King was entered for the whole season, but went and raced the World Vets Class at the USGP, I think mainly to catch up with old mates on the World GP circuit, so he missed the last round. And Cam Taylor only racing the events not too far from home.

Latest results from round 6
Moto 1 : 13 Cam Taylor, 14 Darryll King , 15 Kim Ashkenazi. That would have been a great race to watch between them :D
Moto 2 : 12 Cam Taylor , 15 Kim Ashkenazi , 24 Darryll King.
Moto 3 : 10 Cam Taylor , 13 Kim Ashkenazi , 14 Darryll King.

Is any of it broardcast in Aussie ?.
All we are getting here is the World MX champs. Without the 125's :(
