Anyone know what caused all the pitting and black deposits? or just High hours?
Any feedback greatly appreciated.

the surface finish would either suggest youve cleaned it, its new, or its running rich (not hot enough for carbon build up)
but contradictory, it seems that there is detonation marks around the perimiter of the dome which suggests your running too lean, too much advance, too high compression or ****ty fuel. Or a combination of any of those.
so perhaps during this pistons life it has encountered detonation at one point (deto marks but not regular enough for carbon build up) but for the majority of the time she runs rich

Well I bought it used and im very generous with oil so the richness is my doing. New piston is going in while its in the shop. I have been informed that the cylinder will need replating next time though!

OIL DOES NOT EQUAL RICHNESS
once rebuilt check your jetting to avoid it happening again, or get the shop to tune it for you if you dont know how

I think all in all I should have checked the top end when I bought the bike (used) because I used it for approx 30 hours so god knows how many hours the piston has had on it! Poor thing.

I pull the head and exhaust as a bare minimum on any second hand bikes I buy.

I always do that also (and more) once I get it home. I know some guys who say they do before they buy but nobody around here would ever agree to that first lol.

no need to pop the head off before buying guys,
just purchase a cheap endoscope and then pop the exhaust off and insert the camera... allows you to inspect the bore, the piston dome, piston skirt and ports....

Agreed on both posts. Never know what someone will try and pull. When I was selling my 250 a guy asked me to split the cases so he could inspect the crank. That didn't go down too well
