Title: Refreshing a bike
Post by: eprovenzano on April 21, 2013, 01:48:39 PM
I must admit that I was not one that really "cared" about the graphics or if the plastics had some scratches.  During the winter of 2012 I dismantled the bike to make sure all bearing all wearable items were in top condition.  The steering stem bearing were replaced, all other bearing, swing arm, wheels, chain roller bearing, etc, were cleaned and repacked with grease.  Anything that was suspect was replaced.  While it was apart, I painted the frame, just because I was there...  I put the bike back together and was very happy with the results.  Of course it still had the then 12 year old plastics and graphics.

One year later, I planned on getting a new 2013 300XC...  of course I just can't seem to write the check...  (If I had citabjockey's money that would be a no brainer)  so I decided to freshen up the old girl.  Since she is 100 percent mechanically and the tires are 90% I decided new plastic, seat cover and graphics were needed.  I changed the seat cover and added the plastic.  Yes she does not show her age at all..

But even with the shroud graphics added it still needed something.... so I added the number plate backgrounds and now she has been reborn...

I used to bust on those that were obsessed with the bike's graphics, but I've learned that I need to cut them some slack, as I didn't think my 13 year old bike would look this good.  Now she is 100% mechanically sound, and looks like she lots 10 years of age...

Thanks Swapper, yes I'm pretty proud of the transformation.  Last year when I rolled into the track / riding area and others found out that that my bike is a 2000 model, I've had a few people look at their bike as state I need to do some maintenance and a good cleaning. My bike looked "newer" than their 2 - 4 year old bikes..  I'm going to love the look on their faces now.

Nice, I'm not a big one for stickers and stuff, but its nice to have a bike that looks a lot newer than it is. You've done a great job making yours look real nice without it looking over done ;)
Top stuff :)

Man that thing looks nice! Always did IMHO anyway but you are quite correct with the shiny new graphics giving her that fresh new bike look.  My two fiddy looks really tired in comparison even though its one year newer! This is one very clear advantage of the new bikes over the old. We now have these pieces of plastic that cover up the bulk of the bike. Back in the day such a refresh would mean bang/bondo the dents out of the tank and fenders and a trip to the paint shop.

Oh and relative to Citabjockey's bank account balance (or lack thereof) you don't see a bike newer than 12 years old in my garage (either)!
