Title: A bum deal...
Post by: Willix on April 13, 2013, 09:35:07 PM
So, I've got my YZ on craigslist, all purtied up for sale, and I got response from a lady, saying her husband and kid want to come take a look at it. Come to find out, the kid rides a CRF150R and his folks want him back on a smoker because the 150R made him lazy. Surprise, surprise.

So later that evening, they show up at my doorstep, and I roll 'er out of the shop. The the kid swiftly jumps on and fires it up, then, before the bike is even warm, and with the choke still on, begins to rev the bike repeatedly! Gaah! Predictably, the bike dies seconds later, and the dad hops on, and proceeds to flood the bejeezus out of it. I made the quick comment, "It'll start, if you know what you're doing."
The father sarcastically says, "You know the tricks, you fire it up."

Long story short, it wouldn't fire. :( They then left, laughing and claiming my bike "doesn't even run," in spite of the fact that it started on the first kick when they arrived. They later had the audacity to text message me barely coherent mumblings about how it was out of gas, and that it needed a new spark plug. I actually pulled the expansion chamber off this morning, and when I tipped it, fresh fuel poured out! I've never, ever flooded a bike that badly. I'm embarrased that fellow dirt riders could be this idiotic. They are four stroke riders, I suppose.  :P

I have been riding two strokes for thirty four years and have never seen that happen or heard of it. Those people are tossers

those are the kind of people who you dont let touch it until you have cash in hand

i would've told them to eff off as soon as the kid jumped on it. NOBODY touches your bike until you have cash in hand, plain and simple. that was partly your mistake, but i guess take it as a lesson  :'( :'( :'(

I most assuredly will take it as a lesson. I did get it to fire, though! I kicked it through a few times with the expansion chamber still removed, and fresh fuel dripped out, seemingly forever. I may not sell the old girl anyhow. I forgot how much fun it is to put that 1/8 liter motor through its paces at 11k rpm. What a noise!  ;D

I would text them back a vid of it running and tell them they flooded it like crazy! I generally start my bikes first and get them warm (in front of potential buyers) then I let them try. Mainly for the reason you said. I have had buyers flood bikes, or just not be experienced. I had one guy who claimed he raced off-road come look at an RM125 I was selling that couldn't even pull out without stalling it and then he was bad mouthing the bike. I hopped on and ripped around and brought it back. Then he admitted it was him and not the bike.

I'm with Coop on this one...  I will start the bike, and warm it up with the potential buyer looking on...  When I'm looking at a bike, I want to see it started when it's cold.  I do not want to view a bike that's been warmed up before I get there.  It makes me wonder what's wrong with the bike.  I don't care if the bike is a little cold blooded and takes a little time to warm up, I'm not in a hurry.  If the bike is started cold, then everyone can see there's nothing to hide.

Again I'm with Coop, especially in today's 4 stroke world.  I will start the bike and warm it up.  When I know its warm, then I'll then turn it over to the potential buyer.

I would have told him to get the F*** off and only to do that **** once hes bought it. I have zero tolerance for little wastes of space like that. Then again I keep my german shepard and rotweiler close whenever I've got unkown people looking at bikes. They tend to be much more open to negotiation :D
