Title: My 1985 Kawasaki KX250 restoration
Post by: christopher.j.combrink on April 04, 2013, 02:09:45 PM
Hi everyone!

I stumbled across this forum from the sunny coast of Cape Town, South Africa.

I've just bought an old, beaten up 1985 KX250 and plan to restore her to showroom (mechanically at least) condition so that I can attempt to race her in the VMX (Vintage Motorcross) Scene down in RSA.

She is my first full-dirt bike and I'm still very new to the 'two stroke'!

I was wondering if there were any resources you guys have (the search didn't turn anything up) for bikes this old, of this model? Perhaps someone else on the forum owns one?

I'll take some pics this weekend and keep you guys all updated as the restoration goes..

Keep well and all the best,

CJ

This forum will be very helpful http://www.ozvmx.com/community/, you may have picked a fairly tough one to restore though, Kawasaki weren't known for kx spare parts back up on new bikes let alone nearly 30 yrs on.
Things like suspension strut bearings and alloy shock bodies can create resto problems.
A bonus is they produces a kick arse motor.....something sure to bring a smile to your "first real dirt bike" face.
GO THE WALLABIES :P

I think our problems can be traced back to the nationality of the coach  ::)

You could put an Ohlins shock on the KX, machine up your own spherical rod end struts and, in the end, have something that is really "works'ish" and trick. I've found that as parts dry up you have to get creative with some of the older restorations.

Thanks very much guys!

This weekend I got some time to tear her aprat - well the frame at least.

It looks like the rear shock is shot and there are one or two things that will need replacing, but all in all it's in pretty good condition.

This weekend I'm hoping to open up the engine - the previous owner told me that the 3rd gear is poked, so I've got a new 'gearbox' to install... wish me luck!

As for the Rugby jabs.... don't be such sore losers  :P
