Title: 1989 YZ125 Project Bike
Post by: gpnewhouse7 on February 20, 2013, 08:25:49 PM

Bought the YZ I was looking at!
Seems to be in reasonably good nic considering that I only paid £300 for it.

Suspension is in mint condition, gearbox seems fine, engine turns over with plenty of compression however the seal on the air filter is crap so that will mean it will atleast need a topend (which it would have got anyway) and it needs a new cdi before it will run. Also the previous owner thought it would be a good idea to spray paint the fuel tank blue (I have now powerwashed all that off now) and to fit newer style plastics using zip ties.

My plan is to take it back to its original looks while applying some modern technology to help it fight against its opposition as I do not plan on racing this in any evo class races but instead in the local races which are put into classes based on our skill rather than the bikes we ride so I have to be competitive with 450f's.

PS Charles would I be able to use the TSM logos on a graphics kit for it, Chesterfield style but with TSM rather than Chesterfield.

good buy, they were not known to be the most powerful of beasts but sure are good to ride. check the mains for sideways movement too, my old 90 model was pretty bad, it had worn the cases out and had to glue the bearings in to stop it moving ;)
look forward to seein another build thread ;)

The front end is a '90 model and pipe "looks" like it follows the '90 route.
Check the 10th digit on the frame number a "K" is '89 a "L" is '90.
Eng number for '89 starts 3jd, for '90 3sr.

3XJ enigine number would make it a '90 frame with a '91 motor...

Got started stripping down yesterday and discovered a few little niggles that need to be fixed:

Yes that is filler on that exhaust but thats not going to be a problem when you see what happened when I grabbed the silencer to turn the bike around.

The is also silicon plugging holes in the right hand radiator and the left isn't much better.

Silicone also seeems to be plugging holes in the cylinder and on the magneto cover.

Also looks like I may need to make some new headstay mounts.

And fix the frame/exhaust mount.

Apart from all that she's pretty much brand new haha, fuel tank is looking better after a quick powerwash.

Oh and I couldn't help but laugh at this.

More updates to come tomorrow.

It's your baby, but my advice would be part it out and get your money back, before you live to reget it. It's going to take serious coin to have it back to decent condition and you will be left with one of the slowest 125's ever made.....Just sayin'

...so I have to be competitive with 450f's.

I am not bashing your bike, as I love a good project. But this quote and that bike do not fit. Sorry dude but unless the guys on the 450's are complete noobs that just started riding that week, you bought the wrong bike for that quest.

Good luck with your project and I'd love to see pics as you progress. I had a 1988 YZ125 back in the day and used to have the repair manual but I gave it away a couple years ago or I would send it to you.

Well I'm a firm believer in that its not what you ride its how you ride it so I'll be going into training myself and then the bike just needs good topend power an suspension that can make the most of its weight advantage, there aren't so many tracks round me where a 450 can get to full pelt so a well ridden 125 is usually fairly competitive.

I know this might seem stupid to you but I kinda like the fact that it needs a lot of work, I enjoy the challenge and besides I'm building the bike to keep not to make a quick profit on and in terms of the cost of it I earn nearly £200 per week in a part time job while I'm at college so I have plenty which I can put into the project and I have use of the college's engineering workshop of a lunchtime (its what I'm studying), I know a professional painter who does a great job cheap aswell as an awesome mechanic for anything I can't handle and a brilliant local Yamaha shop for any parts I need so I should be in a good position to build a pretty sweet/fun 125.

Also I know I promised an update today but ended up working instead so hopefully get some done tomorrow morning before I start college in the afternoon.

Well I said what I said mainly because the late 80's early 90's YZ125's are legendary in their lack of engine. The one I had, even after a rebuild, was a dog. I didn't race MX with mine though. It did ok on tight trails. But if the trail opened up the bike really struggled on top.

I am in no way trying to discourage you. I think it's great you are excited about this. I just hope you realize that a 1989/1990 125 is not in the same league as a newer model 125. But have fun as that's all that matters  ;D . I am serious when I say I am looking forward to watching your progress.

...I didn't say it was stupid, just wanted to make you aware of how disappointing a motor the '91 was. If you where racing in '91 then you might do it for sentimental reasons, if not then you might not know about them, you could easy throw 1500 quid at it and still be out gunned by an 85.
I raced a kx 125 in '90, but purchased a '91 YZ 125 in oct '90 ('cause Damon Bradshaw was killin' it), by November I had taken it back to the dealer twice thinking something was wrong with it....way to slow, by December it was sold and I picked up a 250 (the dealer cut me a good deal) and the rest is history ;D

Haha I wasn't even born in 1991 and I often get blown off by kids on their sx85s anyway even when I had the cr250 so its all good.

Anyway I've been looking into the mods that ight help me turn this thing into something a little more competitive so my thoughts so far are to fit the Link Atom injecting into the transfer ports this should get rid of the problems that the carb and reeds were crap and then a TZ250 piston and some porting shall be done aswell as a new pipe (not sure whats best yet but apparently the stock one was crap) and oversized radiators. Any other mods anyone thinks would be good please let me know.

Obviously this will be expensive so don't expect it to be all done an dusted by next weekend.

That headstay has alarm bells going off, I haven't seen that on a 125 before :o
have you checked the frame for cracking..or more like breakage than a crack. Might have something to do with the engine swap though.
