Anyone had any experience with these bikes? I've been trying to find a cheap bike to get back into racing with for a while now and have just stumbled across a cheap and relatively tidy KTM 250 while browsing online, are these bikes any good? I've only had experience with mid nineties and onwards bikes so any advice will be much appreciated.

I have an 85 500. parts are hard to find. Like, I can;t find a piston. They don;t exist/. If it is a watercooled model, it probably has a magnesium clutch cover, and is most likely rotten in/around the water pump. You can probably get a new one, but for around 400 euros. Good place for parts is here http://www.enduroklassiker.at/index.php?&lang=en or I tried part numbers at munn ktm until I found what was in stock, and ebay is your friend for old busted up crap no better than what is already on your bike :p
If you are a masochist with a boner for old euro trash, sure go ahead, but if I had my time again I;d have gone japanese

Oh okay, well there's a yz 125 1989 aswell for the same price so I may go for that instead then if you think that parts will be a problem for the KTM, I just thought the KTM was in better nic and (most importantly) looked cooler.
Anyway I'm going to go and view the yz on sunday and the KTM owner hasn't messaged me back yet so I may or may not be going to see that aswell.

great advice by msmola2002.... I have an '86 KTM 500 and the given parts link is very good, but parts are super spendy when you can locate them. Give the ol' YZed a look and you will be better off in the long run.

The WP suspension on that 84 KTM will beat you to a pulp. I'd look for an 87 Honda CR250 (though parts are rapidly drying up for these as well) if you want something that would be competitive even now as well as being a future collector's bike.

Honda prices are ridulous round here for some stupid reason, so if I had the money for a Honda I'd buy a Yamaha in much better condition.
PS is there anything in particular I need to check on the YZ?

I rebuilt a 1984 KTM 125MX about 13 years ago. Even then some parts were getting hard to find. It was a very fast 125 though when I was done. I still insist it was faster than the 1997 RM125 my nephew owned. Yes I used to live in a trailer park .

Not that long ago I rebuilt 82 and 01 Honda CR125's back to back and I swear that 82 seemed faster.
I really like the very last of the air cooled KTM's that appeared just before these models.
