Title: 2001 cr 250 HELP
Post by: motox11 on February 06, 2013, 03:04:55 PM
alright guys i know this bike is a hot topic when it comes to TSM. I'm thinking about picking up a decent used '01 cr 250 for $1000. the thing is, is that I race the A class and i really want to know what I can do to it to make this thing straight up haul. I want to make this motor as fast as it can be, but still reliable because I am on a $2500 budget for it (that includes purchasing it). Eventually I would do an 02-07 frame conversion with it, but im focused on the motor as of right now. Any ideas of where I should start? and how much hp i could get out of it when it's all said and done?

i thought A riders didn't need help making their bikes go fast.

that is true and false. I just want to make it a race motor. it is a very solid motor stock, but I just want some more power throughout the entire powerband

Slip in a new piston/rings,replace anything worn, get your suspension redone for your weight/ability,go ride.

HA!just making a joke. seriously you can get a port and head job from pc for under $500 cheaper if go to some of he smaller companies like eleven10 mods, kenny g's proformance tuning, cycle playground, etc. pipe/silencer and you are all good. you racing in canada?

Are you racing MX1 or 2? If you're racing 250Fs I would suggest you focus on suspension mods to get you comfortable on teh bike first. Engine mods can wait cos you're already ahead of them in the HP race. Off the factory line at least.

well i was going to use this for some LLQ's and local races. I'm in the process of getting my pro license for the U.S. Nationals and have had a bad string of luck with 06-08 rm's lately so i'm wanting to start out with a project that I know has a great track record and a ton of potential. suspension would be first in line, but in order to be competitive with 48hp 250f's I just need some direction on some mods to get some more juice out of the powerplant. cycle playground is only an hour and a half from me so that would be a logical place to call up and see what he can do for it. does matching the cases make much of a difference?

I don't know about matching the cases but you're right on the 250F front. At the level you're talking about they will be making about that. Suspension first, but motor work will be definitely be needed. I've heard good things about cycle playground. I'd go for the basic mods first. Up the compression, porting to get more power out of the mid-top and a pipe+silencer to go with the porting.

Matching cases makes nil difference, you need to put the power to the ground better than 250F's, a flwheel weight is a good cheap modification for little $. Next would be to learn to set your jetting to the weather, last is  ignition that uses a TPS for 3D mapping. You don't need more HP, more torque will help but you already have too much, being able to out brake the 250F's and not loose the place on corner exit is how to get good results. Another reason not to chase big HP is unless you have very linear power they become tiring to ride fast(more mentaly) you make mistakes when that happens and lap time suffer. In Pro ranks you can't make mistakes.
