i have a yz125 and i was looking to get a 144 kit for it. would i have to shave the cases? could i do this myself?.

Yes machine work is required is required, I don't know, Do you own a machine shop?

What year YZ?

2005+ yes to case grinding and yes to rejetting.  Not sure on older models.

You do not need a machine shop to do it.  It can easily be done with a die grinder or Dremel tool.

And you would also want to run higher octane gas since your changing the compression of the engine.

No, Athena has pump gas versions
