Title: Clutch will not engage.
Post by: fuzz909 on December 02, 2012, 02:12:32 AM: I have a 98 Honda cr125. I bought it as a basket case. After getting it running I tried to take it on a test drive but the clutch will not engage causing the bike to jerk forward as if I put it in gear without using the clutch. I have replaced the cable, clutch plates, friction plates, and even adjusted the cable and it still will not engage. Also I would pull in the clutch with the clutch cover off and it looks like one side of the clutch doesn't move as far as the other. Any thoughts?

quick check would be to swap the spring possitions around and see if the unevenness follows the springs the next place you put them.

When the bike is running and you pull the clutch in and put it into gear, does it surge forward., or does it not move foward with the clutch lever out.
It's just that you say engage, but when your are talking about clutch action with the cover off, you seem to be describing disengagement.
Best clear that up before diognosis.

Post by: cnrcpla on December 04, 2012, 02:27:45 AM: That means it isn't disengaging. And in that case make sure the cable isn't snapped and is adjusted correctly. After you check that, if there is still a problem, than you should probably take the clutch cover off and see what going on in there.

Post by: cnrcpla on December 05, 2012, 03:17:50 AM: When mine did that I over tightened the clutch spring bolts. Go back in a double check all your torque measurements. Oh and make sure that pesky little ball bearing that goes on the end of your clutch rod (number 20) is there. Sometimes they drop out and you wouldn't even notice.

OK, since it's an old problem and not created by the new parts, my first check would be to look at fingers on clutch basket ( #3) these get notched and prevent spreading of the plates, even though the pressure plate is opening.
Try pulling the the entire side cover off (not just clutch cover), pull in the lever and zip tie to the bars, check and see how much movement is in the pressure plate (only needs to be a few mm's) then rock bike back and fowards in gear and see if plates are slipping. If not try and manually spread with a screw driver or the like.
Pictures would be a real help.
Also check to see if all parts are present as per fishe.

Post by: Kodackamera on December 05, 2012, 10:55:32 AM: Intermittent engagement? It could be what's sometimes known as "clutch judder".

One possible cause could be some of the clutch springs having different "free lengths" from each other, one side engaging more or less than the other, over time they have stretched at different rates. And yes as mentioned check the torque used to tighten the bolts, making sure they are in line with specification.
