Last night we picked up a 2005 KX 125 for a 'Budget Build' Project.

It came apart great, no unexpected issues and most of the parts are in great shape.
Wiseco/Pro X, FMF, Cycle Playground and Decal Works have stepped up to support the project.
Stay tuned.

-
Three words. Pro Circuit replica.
-
Nice. I'm a KX fan as you know, I'll keep my eye on this one!
-
Yes!! another project, it will look hot!! I got a good idea, make it a RED Kawasaki

Or purple like the nineties ones.
-
Please no purple or pink!
-
Hopefully Decalworks has something a little more tasteful than the hideous graphics it has now.
-
We just dropped the frame off for some Green powder, should have it back by Wednesday. We should be getting parts in by then and the rebuild can begin.
-
depending on how much of a budget you have..
white plastic could be cool
-
COOL project, there was always alot of kx125,s at the track when there was a 125 class. The kx riders where hard core, but now ya never see anyone riding a 1990-2005 kx or rebuilding them. I wonder why that is, there,s a ton of older cr125 rebuild bikes out there.

Three words. Pro Circuit replica.
This this this and this again.
Toss the current plastics and jerry rig some '12 KX450F with a Pro Circuit/Monster Energy team graphics kit.
-
there you go wanting to four stroke a beautifull two stroke with cosmetics, just throw some cams in it for good measure why don't you.
-
its a budget build guys, not a replica build

i can't believe he got it for 800 bucks, running and everything, the bike looks great already, aside from graphics, and cleaning it up a little
not sure about that green frame though
-
Starting a build with a KX is certainly doing it the hard way-if you're after power anyway.Sound cool though.
-
As much as I would love to build this bike 100%, we are trying to show that for under $2,000 you can build a competetive, reliable race ready bike.
It will be getting fresh bearings, brakes, cables, rubber, RAD Valve, FMF Pipes, Wiseco top end, clutch and a few other bits.
For a little extra power Cycle Playground will be doing a $175 Stage 1 port/head mod.
Our friend Pete Baltera will be stitching us a custom pleated seat. (He did the 144 seat).
We are looking to have it finished by the 26th. I'll keep you guys posted.
-
Pointless doing that Charles a single Monster sticker will add more power than all of that lot put together lol

Imagine how fast it would go if Charles did what Stusmoke suggested!!!
-
Pro circuit cylinder/head mods aren't too expensive!
Very excited, Charles
-
at least as far as the graphics go i vote this
-
Charles I'm looking forward to this build... there is nothing like a responible, budget build. As for graphics, personally I don't care what's on it other then something showing it's a TSM bike.
-
UGHHHHH! now you had to go and do it. Hopefully my son stays on Halo4 for awhile. He's been buggin me on doing his 03 for 2 yrs now. Just not in the budget right now. AAANNNDDDD, you had to mention getting the frame PC'd green too.
See white plastics would be cool. Like I said on FB, good luck getting UFO to ship them in.
BTW, I hope the $2g is including the cost of the bike as well.
-
Yes $2,000 is including the cost of the bike as well.
As far as the graphics and plastics go, Green/White plastics and Decal Works will be sending proofs in a few days. I'll be sure to post them up as soon as I get them.
The cylinder/head shipped to Cycle Playground this morning for mild port/head work.
The frame will be back in 2 days, I'll be able to start some assembly. Hopefully the majoriy of the parts will be here by Friday.
-
Pete Baltera stitched us a seat cover for the project. (He did the YZ 144 seat as well)

-
Graphics proof:
-
Good stuff so far. Looking to see pics of it going back together!

+1 looking very nice
-
Like the graphics, lookin good

before everybody gets all crazy about the boeson products not counting as a "budget build" charles said he's going to do a list of what is absolutely essential in the budget build, and then do another list on top of the essential list, on what else was acquired for the build
Budget build: total $
boyeson
fmf
wiseco
blah blah
extras: overall total $
plastic
graphics
bling
blah blah
boyeson <3 ^^^
-
Even with the extra 'bling' it will still be right around $2k including cost of the bike. Very budget friendly in my opinion.

really? dang! that's crazy
-
Looking good.......can't wait to see the finished product.

very sexy
-
I don't get the negitivity that KX's get at times.
Always had a soft spot for the green meanies.
Looking good guys.

We hit a little snag over the weekend, but it's worked out. Cycle playground cleaned up the cylinder and found it needed to be re-plated.
Luckily right about the same time, a rep from Millenium Technologies said they would like to support the project by providing a cylinder. Back on track, with only a few day delay.

Nice!
-
ProX provided us with linkage/steering bearings, brake pads, fork bushings/seals/wipers and some other misc goodies.
We'll be powder coating and rebuilding the linkage today.

We also got in our first delivery from Wiseco.

The plastics/graphics will be here tomorrow along with a few other items.

Millenium rocks, they do amazing work. My 04 stroker crank cr125, seized twice and broke the exhaust port bridge. Using my engine builders plater, the bore wasn,t even round, plating looked terrible. So I used my own money and sent it to Millenium, they welded and built the bridge up, chanfer all the ports really good, amazing work. Once ya break a cr,s exhaust bridge, they keep breaking. Millenium did the impossible, the exhaust brige is super solid. The green frame looks awesome.
-
Eric gore now works with millennium. See if they will throw in some porting
-
Cycle Playground is doing the porting/head work
-
Might i suggest that you keep it at around $1800? That way you can tell all the fooper troopers you made a bike that well and truly tromps theirs for the same price it costs them to to a top end
-

How did you get the engine cases cleaned up and looking like that? I'm trying to clean up a 05 YZ125 and I'm impressed how good you made that engine look!

Soda blasting and a soft wire brush on a dremel
-
Some fresh linkage bearings and a little more powder.

Plastics and Graphics from Decal Works:

Top stuff Charles, it's really starting to look the goods now

This. I've never been a huge fan of the green machines simply because of their known unreliability. But this, I like.
-
Looks great Charles, i can't wait to see her ripping around a track
-
Looks great Charles.
-
Moved from the work bench to the stand.

-
Looking good!
I had a KX250 in the 90's that I polished the sub frame on. I thought it was trick at the time but it was a real pain to keep nice haha.
-
yikes! no rag over the crank.

Everything is always covered, they just get removed for photos..
-
i figured that. just spicing this thread up is all.

I don't think kdx owners would agree with that statement stu.

You're right, what I said was not what I meant at all. When I said green machines I meant the KX line up. My bad, poor choice of words.
-
Not a big fan of the KX (they just don`t look right) but this is beginning to look pretty cool.
Would of been a LOT faster with Monster graphics but oh well.
I say the next project bike should be from a european manufacturer though.
-
So,you can make a silk purse out of a sows ear.
Who'da thunk it?
Nice job.Love the rad shrouds too.

Cylinder coming back from Millennium Technologies and Cycle Playground:

Are you going to send the cylinder back to whoever did the "porting" because all of that fell out of favour in the 70's

All you ever do is bring people down, you pompous dick.

Looks great Charles. Keep it up!

What do you do? Swing wildly between a sycophantic fanboi and a obnoxious cretin. If something is shit it needs to be said

If something is shit it needs to be said.
I believe that is what I've done.

I believe that is what I've done.

Maybe the proof is in the build.I'll be interested in the ride report myself.

This.
Its looking good Charles. Looking forward to aforementioned ride report.

Everything went fairly smooth.
Started with 400 main/ 35 pilot, middle clip. We ended up dropping the needle 1 clip, jetting is spot on.
We also had the front master cylinder blow out at the track, I swapped it with an extra I had.
The power surprised me, plenty from bottom to top.
The Wiseco/Boyesen/FMF combo make her sing for sure! We'll have some video coming soon
-
Nice. Well if it performed half as good as it looks than you are in good shape.
