So much for being an RM Guy.
I have my little (200lb) heart set on a '13 YZ125. I'm so excited! Now I'm just waiting for one to come into any of the five dealerships around North Georgia! Hopefully I'll be ripping up Durhamtown and Monster Mountain soon!
-
seriously dude, if you're going to buy a new bike, why in the world would you buy a yamaha? please do yourself a favor and buy a ktm or a husky 125/150
worlds better, you're basically paying 6k for a 2006 yz125
if you want a yz then that's cool, but if it were my money it wouldn't be a yamaha
-
Biased

On a side note, KTM's 125sx and husky's cr125 are both awesome and a good buy. Yamaha currently leads in the suspension department but with an expensive price tag.

how can i be biased? to be fair i haven't even been able to ride mine yet

buy what you like motoxr377 and sorry to hear your wife has to authorize anything you may do.HA!
-
Don't do it. But not for the reason 595 gives. Get a 2012 with a blue rear fender like I just bought. The Yamahas are great and reliable bikes but it is true the KTM's are faster. Gotta go with the SSS suspention and cheaper parts. To each their own and I voted Yamaha. At least the still make them. IMHO the number one company that needs a boycott is honda (please notice the h is not in caps) for trying to decide on their own that 2 strokes need to go away. 595, the KTM is a better bike but the YZ still is a contender. We need to support all 2 stroke offerings but then only if they are worth the price. The price is buy it, maintain it, and live with it. And 377, if you like the 13 white fender get it. After all it needs to make you happy, not me. Blue or white fender, still the same big grin! Braaapppp!
-
You should get the 2013 KTM150sx, that thing would rip WAY more than the yz
-
"Wife authorized a new YZ125..." Congrats on the new bike and congrats on getting the bosses permission. I know many state is easier to ask for forgiveness then to ask for permission, but from my experience permission makes the wife at least feel she's in control.
I pushing for a new KTM 300 in the spring.
-
Congrats.... Enjoy a great bike... Glad you are helping to keep 2 strokes alive with buying new.

He obviously does want a YZ because he said he was buying one, and it's his money not yours
.
Congrats man, new bikes are great no matter what brand they are.
-
sorry if my post sounded harsh, it wasn't intended to be

i think its great that you are getting a new yamaha, that'll show them that there is still demand for that bike (and 2 strokes in general) which may bring there attention to it even more (see 13' yz intro)
i'll be really surprised if you can find one, the yamaha dealerships around my area haven't seen a new full size 2 stroke in a few years
-
In my area, at least the last time I stopped by, there was a 125 & a 250 on the floor.
-
I don't need the fastest bike, I need the bike I'm fastest on. The SSS (re-sprung) is ready to race. I'm so much more comfortable on the YZ. That goes a long way. Oh yeah, I get parts at dealer cost.
You should get the 2013 KTM150sx, that thing would rip WAY more than the yz
You should quit school, get a job, and buy one. It's your money. Best of luck!!
Thanks for the replies! Oh, and I'm deployed for months at a time. It makes the old girl feel special by exercising some control over my life, as she knows in reality she has very little.

HA!

Same reasons I went for the YZ. My 08 YZ250 is much faster than the 125 or even a 150SX. The 125 is exactly what I want. No dealer cost for me but I get a fair deal.

if I could afford a brand new bike... :O I stuck with the 2000-2004 range right now, I have an 01
-
The SSS suspension is great, but I can't call my self a 2-stroker then support the 4-stroke brands. All that money is going straight to supporting 4-strokes.
What you should do is get a 2013 TM 125. 2-stroke supporting brand, better motor than the Yamaha, better quality and part spec'ing, AND now has the KYB forks as well as their killer factory shock.
-
Jesus, you'd think I was buying a four stroke!
But seriously, if anyone in the GA/TN/SC area sees one at the dealer, let me know.

Haha.... So true. TM also makes 4 strokes... Why does that not qualify them as a 4 stroke brand? Glad you got what you wanted Motoxr377 and the YZ is a fine choice... These other guys are jealous and would dump their old iron in a second for new YZ.

This one looks pretty good with the white fender. '97 style!
-
Hey 377, we will be at Durhamtown on the first half of thanksiving week. Screaming eagle track (MX 4) is our little favorite. They also mellowed out the Bomber track so us mere mortals can ride it too. FYI there are some Tampa area dealers on Crailslist with new 2012's at 5700 to 5800. May be a gimmick but worth a shot. Beware of the barneys ad since they are bait and switch.
-
Look at the end of the day, buy the bike you like more. BUT! if you want to buy a YZ, don't get a 2013. Get an 08 second hand and polish it up. Saves you about 1 grand atleast (pure speculation). Thats my advice, unless the white rear fender makes the bike go way faster. If you're truly determined to go with the YZ, go you. Do it and show the foopers that the two strokes are still winners. But don't do it under false pretenses, look at your options and buy the bike you like the most. If suspension is the only thing that is making you lean towards the YZ, then the money you save by buying the KTM will be almost enough to get some suspension work done, making it just as good as the SSS.
Whatever way you slice it, buy the bike you want. KTM has more power and with 500 or so dollars put into the suspension it will be as good as the YZ. But if you feel like you're rider a bull instead of a KTM 150/125 SX, go with the YZ.
Whatever you decide, I'm looking forward to some videos
-
I went to the dealer to talk numbers. Terrible.
I'm shopping for 09-up now, they're half of a new bike in price.
-
At this point you could look for a husky cr125, might even still come with a 144 kit..

It does in Aus, in fact they're even willing to fit it for you at no extra charge at a Brisbane dealership I think. Be warned: The Husky comes with a mikuni carby which has earned a very bad name among the hondas. The huskys are a great bike though and good suspension, cheap as chips too. They do of course, give up horsepower to the KTM. But I'm still deciding whether to go with that or the KTM.
-
Good luck on the new bike! Get what makes you happy!
I'd stay away from Monster Mountain MX if it has rained alot or looks as it will while you are there, it's mostly clay and gets slicker than snot when it rains, it's an awesome track and facility though, so on a dry day it would be prime.
For those of you that live around North Georgia and Alabama, There is a new track in Phenix City, AL that is pretty good! Just across the state line form Columbus, GA. The Guy that built it originally bought the land for hunting, but ended up putting a really nice track on it! One lap is about 1.5 miles. It has a real natural rythym/feeling to it, and its mostly sand( not Clay). You can look it up on Faceboook at Phenix City MX. The guys name is Warren Tyson, very nice and loves to ride. He is always looking to improve the track and is available most days to open it up. Its a little off the beaten path, but well worth the drive to ride a great track! I rode it last February with my Dad when we were down there visiting family. Warren has done a great job, and the track has come a long way since he opened it up!

Yamaha takes 100% of the 2-stroke profits and dumps it into 4-stroke updates. They don't give a $hit about the 2-strokes. TM on the other hand likes 2-strokes and continues to develop them. I would prefer giving my money to someone who will use it to update their 2-strokes and not throw it all into the foopers. TM at heart is a 125 2-stroke Kart engine manufacturer.
-
^^^ While I agree with you for the most part, I am not going to make a guy feel like crap for chosing a Yamaha.... Any new 2 stroke is better than a 4 stroke in the end.
-
True.
And you can take the piss all you want about not buying an 06 and spending some coin tarting it up -
but if everyone did that, there won't be any 3 year old '12s in 2015. And hell, maybe yamaha will pull the pin on the yz range on the basis of no sales. Dangerous slippery slope that one. And it is still a new bike, not one that has been beaten like a red headed stepchild for the last 5 years.
-
Good stuff Michael... I actually considered a used YZ, but after figuring in all of what it needed, I went new. There is always splinter cells in any "movement"... The fact is, Yamaha IS supporting two strokes by producing them... And there 250f side isn't exactly cutting edge... The other 3 Asian companies are 4 stroke companies only.
Less 2t's isn't the answer to a revolution.
377, get your NEW YZ & shred!!!!
-
In a 125 ONLY contest and I mean ONLY, no 150s, the YZ would be my very first stop no two ways about it. Excellent engine by 125 standards, awesome chassis awesome ergonomics and the best suspension in the game, with the possible challenger of the air fork that I have and probably never will take a spin on.

Thats a good point. When buying a used bike there is ALWAYS something that needs replacing and you can never be certain about the safety of it. God knows whats missing or whats been bent or cut.
-
^^^ yeah Stu, buying a used bike sounds great and all, but the parts can add up quickly. I was set to buy an '08 YZ 125 as an interim bike, but after I looked into it more, I said the hell with it and bought the Katoom... I know there are garage queens out there however...
-
The previous owner of my 125 stuck a 250F clutch perch on and then cut off the hotstart perch that was on it with an angle grinder
-
But nothing is better than bringing home a brand new bike, drooling on it then throwing a leg over n thrashing the $hi7 out of it!
-
^^^ EXACTLY!!!
too much hamfisted nonsense on most used bikes for my taste, either that or I can't accept used bikes at there face value...
-
Buy the YZ and tell everyone else to shut the f*** up.
-
Best post yet on this thread!!!! ^^^^

This thread turned out to be awesome. Smoke or die!!!

Now you are on the hook to get a YZ... Pix too!

I'm overhauling a neighbour's 96 YZ 125. The whole thing is held together with hose clamps and zip ties.

BUT, I bet the damn thing still runs... can you say that for a 16 year old MX 4 stroke... I think not.

did you ever get a lead on one?

No... The hunt has taken a turn. I'm checking out a (hopefully cherry) '10 YZ250 tomorrow. I'll let you know!

Really? A YZ 125 over an RM 125?

stock for stock, it's sadly no contest. That's my humble take after riding both.

Still gonna get the 2012 yz?

Have you ever rode the later rm`s? My 07 used to out drag my mates 06 yz and we both thought the rm handled better through the twisties. Its just a shame you can't get new ones anymore.
-
That was also my experience. I rode my buddies 06 quite a bit and it was no contest. When he did the 144 and all I had was a SST pipe, he couldn't pull away from me. I think the YZ would make a better beginners bike, or woods conversion 125 by a lot, but as a motocross bike, I found the RM to pull harder, hit harder, and handle much better.
-
Picking up this '09 YZ125 tomorrow for $2400. Bone stock, barely ridden. I thought it was a good deal.

(I didnt take the picture)
