Hey guys, im new to this website and i was just wondering about a 2003 cr250r. I just wanted to know if the handle good for desert riding and if its a reliable bike..

It depends. Has it had the snot beaten out of it with zero maintenance?

Or is the seller like the guy who sold me my 02 KX250 that is the most anally retentive guy I ever met?

I'm not sure how the CR's close ratio transmission would work out in the desert?

the guy said it was well maintained and had no problems and has a fresh rebuild too

I would be very leary of it thats an old fourstroke handling prob not to good. It could have ben rebuilt but how long ago and how hard did he ride it, also how much of the motor was rebuilt. I would not buy it

I ride a 2006 CR250R set up for moto in the So Cal desert quite often and its not the ideal bike because of the gearing. I love the handling and suspension on this bike and it works well from moto to desert but the stock gearing isn't good for wide open terrain.

As far as the bike goes you really want to get a clean one and skip any junk or well worn bikes for that matter, be picky here and don't get a roach you are going to have to dump thousands into to get running. The 2003 Honda CR250R was a good bike but if you can get a newer 2005-2007 model there were refinements to the bike in many areas. The weak spot on this bike is the mikuni carb and finiky jetting IMO.

Ask for receipts of the rebuild. Also, take a compression tester with you. Don't dismiss it out of hand. It cant be as bad as what I came home with once:

Receipts for the rebuild, if he says he did it himself he better be able to show you his case splitter, flywheel puller etc. And he should also have the receipts for the parts that he bought and put into the machine. If theres none of that, stay well away. I've made the mistake of buying the first bike I come across once and it turned out very VERY poorly for me. Like everyone else is saying be very picky, if something seems fishy just take your money and leave.

In regards to its suitability in the desert I agree with Openhiemer. If its just wide open desert you're going to be running and you're still after a two stroke, look at the KTM 200/250/300 exc.
