Title: anyone come up with a better mousetrap?
Post by: coblefutch on July 01, 2012, 02:13:41 PM
I just rounded the head on my 2nd oil drain plug this year on my 05 YZ. I even went out an bought a new socket (6 sided) just for this after ruining the first one. I took the new plug to sears and picked the socket that fit the plug the best.  Still rounded it off.
They don't give you much to bite on and the metal on this thing is like butter. I like to change my oil every two races and now I the only way I will get the rounded plug out is to drill a hole in the center of it and use an easy out.
What am I doing wrong? and or does someone make an aftermarket plug the is better, larger head or better materials..

Too much torque.. Just snug it. I have never stripped or rounded a drain bolt.

I always use magnetic aftermarket plugs. They usually have a larger head and better material

i  have rounded some too.

what i did was grind down to next smaller size socket, just a Thad bigger so you knock it on..

Another way i did was much more simple, I took of clutch cover and drained that way.

It may work if you don`t get a replacement

Like the guys said just snug it, but I got mine stuck in there, came that way when I bought,  and had to have it machined out.  I replaced it with a moose magnetic one, the bottom had a much larger hex head on it.

Buy an inch pound torque wrench and use it every where on the bike.  You will be surprised at how little the bolts are tightened.   Drain plug is only 17 ft lbs.    After a while of using the torque wrench you will get a better feel for how tight bolts are supposed to be.  I will bet anyone not using a torque wrench including myself is over tightening bolts.  Also if you do not have a torque wrench please do not touch your triple clamps.

I had the same problem on my YZ had to get the shop to remove it. I asked what could i do to stop it, he said buy a six sided socket to fit the plug not the twelve notched type sockets. So I bought a six sided socket just for the drain plug and have never had any problems since. He advised me six sided sockets are better tools than 12 notched type, they are definitely more expensive and they fit grip better.

Thanks all for the input, I plan on doing all of the above. I will replace it with a Moose plug and start using my inch lb wrench.
The sad thing is I am anal about torque on every other fastener but have never torqued these plugs.

I have had a little better luck with the gytr bolt and it has a magnet also. When mine get rounded I use vise grips and put in another new bolt.

Not stripped a sump but have stripped a carby bowl where the 17mm cover goes over the main jet
