Title: KTM 360 sx
Post by: velaride on May 09, 2012, 08:03:55 AM
I have myself a 1996 Ktm 360 mxc/Sx. I have only found this bike in the 96' and 97' model years. I have done much research, even ordered 96 and 97 issues of dirt rider and dirtbike magazines trying to obtain info on the bike. Im pretty sure the 360cc was only available the 2yrs, and all the specs I have. My question is has anyone else owned one of these neat bikes. If so, do you have any feedback? Like why did they only make it for two years? Because they came out with the 380? I don't know, but would like to. Any info would be great.

I was kind of in the same boat with my 380. Did not know much about them until I got mine. I gotta say I love it. Great bike, awesome power, pretty good legs, light weight, yada yada. All the same stuff I'm sure you like about yours. A guy I know used to own a 360. Has a 300 now. Said the 360 was a little too much for him (He is very fast but he is also getting on in years -- YMMV).

Ford gave me several pointers when I got mine:

- replace the aluminum wheel spacers front and rear with steel sleeve or pure steel versions to keep the seals working. The stockers will let dirty seals dig trenches in them that ruin the seals.
- my 380 has some jetting issues at low throttle settings. This is pretty common. I had to go to a bigger cutaway slide to really clean it up.
- Watch the kickstarter bolt. Tighten it too much and you may snap it trying to get it out. Too little and you may lose the starter on the trail. I replaced the socket cap with a hex head and safety wired it.
- the subframe bolts like to back out. locktite them.

There were others but I don't remember off the top of my head. Review the new bike to me ktm 380sx thread and it shows my bike being checked out.

You have pics/video of yours? I would be very interested in seeing more!

Thanks for the info. I have experienced some of these issues. Good tips. It is a fun bike and I will probably never part with it. I will post some pics as soon as I can.where did you get the larger cutaway slide? It seems they may share the same one. The engine looks almost identical to the 380 in the photos. Also, after hunting down parts for this 360, I found that it shares a lot of the same parts as the older 250 and  the 300's.

I think you should just scrap the whole project and sell me the motor.  I'm tired of my 125 and I haven;t even ridden it.

No way dude! This thing is mine for the keeping! I have put a lot of work into it. Speaking of that 125, I just picked up one for a friend. That thing is a lil snazzy itself. Not a 360, but super fun to ride at the track. His is an 04 125 Sx.

I have most of a 97 360 sx if you need qny  parts ? Also the bigger the reed spacer you can put on it the better they did not have enough crankcase volume, and the 97 is the better one of the two it has a longer rod

Dirt Bike magazine (U.S.) did a comparison test of the 360 along with the KX500,CR500 and Husaberg 501.The 360 won.

I don't know too much about the 360, I have a 2000 380sx. They stopped the 360 when they bored/stroked it to 380 for 98.
What forks are on your bike? WP 50mm or the Marzoccis? Don't know anything about the Zokes but the WP 50mm Extreme forks are supposed to be amazing forks, better than the 43mm inverted (damn, why did I get a 2000!?).

There is some information in the earlier parts of the KTMTalk 380s Only thread I believe. Then it went to 380s only again later.
